friend wants the same car as her mum - a new hyundai getz .

must be a 5 door.
1.1 engine will do.

i cant find them anywhere for less than £6800.

For that money you can pick up a fiesta.

but she wants a getz.

does anyone know of any cheap hyundai dealers/importers?

BCC hyundai used to be cheap but after a quick look at their website, seems as if they have gone back to demanding list price.

As she is a good mate and I know how much (and how muich harder than a euro equivalent it will be to sell) - i dont want her to pay anything over £6300.

Surely a hyundai importer/broker/dealer is knocking them out at there realistic value? Read more

Not kidding about the C3 build quality being ropey!!

My brother had one of these as a hire-car over the weekend. Laughable. The doors sounded as if there were bits rattling around in them when they shut (my 13yo Nissan sounds better), the back of the rear seat is bare metal, no covering and the dashboard is as plasticky as they come.

I can see why these things are so cheap -- poor fit and finish.

when did renault take over nissan? and when did they start having any influence on design etc? Read more

I have to compare notes with my own cars.

My Accent is 5 years old and has covered about 60,000 miles. There is no obvious signs of wear anywhere in the interior, except a small scuff on one of the doors where I dropped a computer monitor against it. It would probably come out if I could be bothered to sort it out.

I find it very hard to believe that Hyundai are producing better quality interiors than Toyota. Given that this cheap car has aged well, I can only conclude that those which haven't are either (a) inferior to Hyundai (unlikely I'm sure you'll agree for most brands) or (b) not looked after. What other reason could there be?

Hi all, are drivers more curtious to other motorists who drive the same make/model as themselves or is it just me being trivial?
For instance, if you was driving a Ford Focus in a traffic queue & another Focus wanted to join in front of you, would you let them in & not let a VW Golf in if it were the same instance?

I was let out by a BMW today so the drivers
are not all as arrogant as people make out. I
wait politely as my boyfriend comments on what type of dealer
they are esp if its an X5

The clock analogue clock in my Y-reg Ford Ka seems to be running slow recently.
Today when i got in it after not been started for a week i noticed the clock was about an hour slow, then once when i used it during the week it gradually became slower by a about 10 minutes.
Can anybody explain why this is?

Just had a quick look at Ebay classic cars, to keep the old appetite whetted, and the first thing I saw was a Mercedes 190 roadster, with a detailed service history etc, probably worth at least 25 grand of anyone's money if it's real. 10 hours to go, an asking price of 3,750 pounds and contact by private email only.
Last time I looked on there I saw a Rolls Royce worth around 25k, with a buy it now price of about 4k.
I remember the story from not long ago of a family that was attacked when they turned up somewhere with cash to buy what seemed a ludicrously cheap Merc.
What is going on there? Is Ebay incapable of policing its own site?
I have tried to post warnings on there but I can't figure out how to tell Ebay what I think of them.
I guess this is a warning... Read more

Ebay's listings are scanned as soon as the submit button is clicked. They don't like ads with DVD and copy in them, for example.

What they don't seem to be able to do is scan ads with obvious scammers' tricks, such as "do not contact me via Ebay"

What Car - right at the end - has a (usually) helpful list of PX values. It doesn't go far enough back for the '97 Hyundai, but I'd guess between £1k and £2k.

Unfortunately it lists the Clio Extreme only as a 53 registration - must be an error. 52-reg 1.5 Clios are quoted bwteen £3k and £4k: depends on whether it's a 65 or an 80 bhp. Mileage is a little on the high side so maybe nearer £3k.

If you're PXing - best only to PX the Clio and try to sell the Hyundai privately. Generally, the newer the car you're buying the better price you'll get.

One final thought - if the Hyundai is in good condition and you're fond of it, but you're offered peanuts for it, consider keeping it: it may not lose much more than it has already.

Has anyone here had any experience (good or bad) of the above. I beleive there were a few problems with the early version, but I'm thinking of the latest one.

Which would be the best engine to go for the 110 or the 150 bhp (I do not want the 100 bhp) Read more

The old model had dreadfull reliability I've heard of several bad repots regarding the new model and of poor service fron the dealers.
The new VW Transporter is worth a look, as is the new Toyota van

With winter gloom almost with us I have noticed the bad state of catseyes and other reflective aids on our roads. On a recent trip back from the Westcountry most A & B roads reflectors were not working and those on the motorways were poor.
Car headlights are obviously better now than 20 - 30 years ago when people relied more on catseyes but surely they would still be a really useful aid to safety if they worked ?

As a student (going back ...er....about 36 years!) I used to work for the Leicestershire Highways Authority during college vacations, and I used to be involved in the maintenance of cat's eyes. These were the genuine self-cleaning rubber ones, not the modern-day plastic stick-on type. I seem to see very few of that type these days as I suspect that the original design would be too expensive to maintain, and the degree of wear would be so much greater with today's levels of traffic.

If you haven't seen one close-up, the old rubber type were cleverly designed so that water collected in the cast-metal base plate would be squidged up by a vehicle passing over. This water would clean the 'cat's eyes'. Maintenance problems occurred when the base plates sometimes clogged up with grit and when the rubber wore. We used to walk miles with a special metal tool to take out and replace the rubber units. Another major cost occurred when the road was re-surfaced; if this was just surface-dressing, then the cat's eyes could be covered with a large patch which could be removed later but for any other surface replacement work, the base units had to be dug out with a jack-hammer and replaced after re-surfacing - a very expensive operation, I would think.
