I can't seem to find the oil filter on my renault clio 1.2 16v 2002. Any offers?
Am I just being stupid or am I staring right at it?

Cheers Read more

If it's the same as my 2000 1.2 8v, the filter is located immediately above the front cross-member, just behind the crank pulley, making it almost invisible to a casual look.

Access is gained by removing the O/S wheel and opening the hinged plastic flap - crafty French!

Product I have never seen or heard of on sale today. Something to add to oil and another to put in the fuel tank. Claims up to 21% improvement in fuel consumption, up to 70& reduction in engine wear and up to 80% reduction in pollution. It also " Segregates carbon deposits and limits clogging which is the main cause of wear and decreased performance" - whatever that means

A bit of waffle about tests carried out according to international standards recognised by the automobile industry; "used today by many professionals and private users worldwide". No actual names of organisations who have done tests so I guess it is the usual overhyped stuff @ £24.95 for the 2 bottles. You can get your money back if you aren't satisfied but how are you going to know if it has or hasn't worked - will you be able to locate your segregated carbon deposits?

I've sent Tony a copy of the ad. I'll let you know what happens.

The ad looks just like so many others of its ilk. I wouldn't touch the stuff with a bargepole. Perhaps it might be fun to press the manufacturers for more details of "Gold Medal Winner at International Invention Fairs at Brussels, geneva, Milan and Paris" . . . just done that at:

Some motorcycle parking, which I believe is free, can be seen here and there in London. But where I live people usually put their scooters or motor bikes in the residents' parking slots. Doesn't always matter, but what with one thing and another one sometimes longs to just ignore the damn things and crush them or move them.

Some cyclists have the good sense to leave them on the pavement, which inconveniences no one and leaves much needed space for badly parked cars.

However this I believe is illegal.

It shouldn't be. Indeed it should be the correct place to park these small, fragile, expensive, polluting, space-guzzling devices.

Politicians take note. This is a serious suggestion. Read more

Coming back south from "oop North" today I joined the M62 newar Howden, S Yorks. Rather peculiar junction, you go over the motorway to a roundabout, double back on yourself to the only exit from roundabout onto a downhill slip road. Near top of slip road was a police car, half on a very narrow hard shoulder, half on sliproad, with red lights flashing. Thought there might be a queue or something, but no, just cop with radar gun pointing towards motorway below. I joined a clear inside lane at 70 and was almost immediately passed by a lovely red Ferrari which was doing about 80 in the middle lane - well he wasn't going much faster than me anyway. He was being passed by a few cars in outside lane doing about 85 - 90 ish, maybe even faster. Could still see slip road in mirror and watched cops set off and blast along until after a while they were behind the Ferrrari now in inside lane and half a dozen other cars which had been going fater than him in outside lane but which had now moved into middle lane and slowed to 70. Cops overtook them all and pulled in front of Ferrari with all lights flashing. I went past just as they were stopping on hard shoulder.
But why him? There were at least 6 other cars who had gone down outside lane much faster, and yes I realise the Ferrari was doing over 70 so was breaking the law, but it did seem a bit unfair. Maybe they stopped him to tell him what a nice car he had.

Ahhh - I'd missed that.

I'm a constant moaner about duff lights but discovered this evening that the n/s dip bulb on SWMBO's Focus was dead. I want to get onto the case in the morning and I've sussed that there is some instruction in the 'Owners's Guide'.

After recent posts about difficulties in changing bulbs, have I got trouble ahead - or is it as easy as a quick glance at the 'Guide' seems to suggest? Any comments from Focus bulb changers would be most welcome. Thanks. Read more

That's because halogen bulbs, as the filaments age, will progressively reduce
their light output. Might be worth changing the other side as well.

Thanks, Chaz, you've confirmed what I'd suspected - but after the problems I had getting the first one in, I'm in no hurry to tackle the second one ;-)

I've been a member of Streetcar for a while now, renting a Golf for a fiver an hour for the few times a month I need a car.

There's an interesting article on Car Clubs in today's (London) Evening Standard where two blokes gave up their cars for a month and used a car club instead. One of the guinea pigs was Richard Bacon who says he has decided to get rid of his Cayenne after calculating he could save five grand a year by using CityCarClub instead. Guinea pig number 2 says he will use a car club as an alternative to a second car.

It's unlikely many people will give up their only car in favour of a car club car, but I was just wondering how many would dump their second car if there was a car club vehicle located within a 'reasonable' distance of their home? And if not, why not? Read more

Whizzgo have just started offering Picassos and are looking at offering other vehicle types in the future. They seem to have a deal through Citroen, so a C8 may appear one day.

'transmission tunnel in a Mondeo'? is there a model I don't know about?

Unless you are doing high mileages why bother with a diesel at all?- are you going to use chip shop oil ?(joke)
Diesels are more hassele than petrol over time with more to go wrong .and it does.

as for the 'french thing'- just look at the Which guide to reliable cars- that says it all.

Surely Mondeos are easier to mend ,with cheap parts, as they get old - must be a plus point?

At last TomTom have done something reactive to the silly drooping dock on the first models of the newer TomTom 510, 710 and 910 units. go to www.tomtom.com/newdock/
I've received mine in about 5 days, great service, wish they would get the RDS-TMC receiver out a bit quicker though! Read more

Hi All,

A couple of years ago - i was getting a funny noise like a buzzing or clicking coming from the glovebox of my Pugeout 106 -1.1 95- when i switched the ignition off it was deffinetly coming from the glovebox i had a quick look and there is a fuseboard, what looks like a realy- thats my guess- and some wiring in there. It only happened occasionally and i just left it as it wasnt affecting the car. The noise only happended very occasionaly like once every 2/3 months.

However it has retured and happens when i am driving and not when switching off its like a buzzing - sort of noise i guess may happen if a switch is somewhere stuck between off and on - a similar noise can be heard by half pressing in light swich in a house-. The car seems to be running ok. I dont want to spend money - or as little as possible- if i can avoid it as i am getting of the car in a couple of months although i am anxious to avoid a breakdown as i need the car for work,

Has anyone any ideas of what to check for??? or if they have come accross this prob before i would like to hear from you.

Cheers

Andy

I recently purchased a 25 with minor frontal damage and have changed both seat belt pretensioners for new ones, because the old ones had activated. The airbag had not deployed but the srs light had stayed on. After changing them the light still stays on... do i need to go to the dealers to be ripped off or is it fixable from home ? Read more

borite?????????

i would think if both pretensioners have gone off then the airbag did too and was probably changed pre purchase to throw you off the scent.
the activating cables (yellow? but could be pink with blue dots seing as its a rover ideally need changing as well as they apparantly can melt on triggering)
oh---------and the answer to your initial problem the actuater needs changing for one thats never fired (any scrappie should have lots of these for a bluewie as the cars get scrapped for unreliable engines rather than seing scenery at close quarters)
good luck
