Hi

I read somehere a while back (on here?) tat the new MoT system prohibited the repeat of an advisory from one year to the next, i.e. you had to get it done before the next MoT whether you'd like to or not. Is this true?

Seems a bit daft as I've been advised of corroded rear sills for 3 years (old system) and it's always passed.

Thanks

Hi

Thanks for all the replies, I'm glad you've set the record straight now, as it did seem a little unfair to say the least!

Ok so the pro is cheaper, but are the cons, have you guys got any good/bad experiences that you want to share.

Is the timescale quicker than showroom, What about warranty problems, sevicing etc.

Im looking for a corrolla verso T180 and i dont think paying over 21k to a showroom is a good idea , but paying 17 k is , and this will be my first brand new car. Read more

>>dont knock the guy...

I wasn't really knocking BH at all, it was more a bit of gentle fun - I'm sure that he could teach me a thing or two about customer service.

The joke is, I know how far BH was from the station when he was working in the garage he mentioned - most of us would think twice about starting the car for such a short trip!

Does anyone know how to get to the washer motor on a 2001 Focus. It looks like it's in the wing and I tried to get the headlamp out to peer inside but it didn't want to come out easily. Read more

[if you are smart, syphon out the water before you prize the pump out otherwise you'll get
a soaking like I did.]

The 99 Focus has a washer bottle with a filler spout that goes through 90 degrees immediately under the cap so I would think syphoning would also be a challenge.

To be perfectly blunt, they're doing my head in.

Whenever I brake when I'm going slowish or coming to a stop, the brakes squeak very loud. Normally they'd do this and then stop after a while but they're doing it all the time and I wince every time it happens. I'm 99% certain it's coming from the back, therefore, the drums.

Now I don't want to take it to the garage to look at squeaky brakes so is there anything I can do? Bear in mind that my knowledge of stuff like this is strictly limited to you guys. I can take the wheel off and don't mind getting my hands dirty but that's about it.

Any advice and pointers?

Cheers,

Adam

On Ka & Fiesta, you can do it either way but if you take that nut off,you need to take the bearings apart and then reset afterwards. The four bolts on the back on a Ka/Fiesta allow you to take drum off with stub axle still attached and is the Ford recommended way.I've never worked on Focus back brakes but I'm sure someone else has.

I have a Sept 1999 Rover 420 IS with 77,000 miles on the clock. It has been regularly serviced at the required intervals & has been a brilliant car. However, it has recently started to run very roughly from starting & continues like this throughout the day-does sometimes get better but is particularly noticeable if in too high a gear.
The mechanic who services the car has changed the leads & the plugs and I have filled up the last 3 times with BP Ultimate, with a shot of Redex in each time but none of this has cured the problem.
My mechanic is at a loss & I wonder if you have any suggestions, please?

So far for this problem we have:-
>
> Replaced leads & plugs
> Run a compression test-all OK
> Run a scan on the firing-all OK
> Replaced manifold inlet gasket-due to air leak
> Replaced injector seals (8)-1 damaged causing air leak
> Gas treatment
> Ran a test on swapping injector 1 with 2 (possible spray
> deficiency)-all OK

Hi

I'm looking to moving to Brighton. I was wondering if anyone knew what motorcycle theft is like in Brighton?

Also, in terms of job hunting, does anyone know the best agencies in the area?

Thanks

This thread is distinctly non-motoring.........i'm sure the motorcycle theft thing was just a ruse to allow a life/job query

Just to ask if anyone has had a similar experience. I called to renew my policy with a well-known company and on two separate occasions waited more than ten minutes with no answer to my call. In frustration, I went to an outfit best-known for its breakdown service and they got me a significantly cheaper quote with improved peripherals. I e-mailed my insurers, told them what had happened, and got a reply from a geeky type who said they had so much new business from their current advertising campaign they were afraid they were presently letting their valued customers down!! He was sorry for my trouble but said they planned to improve their service soon. Do these people have a death wish, or what?

It's a generally accepted rule in business that it is far cheaper to keep an existing customer than it is to in a new one.

Hi all, I am after a good independant Vauxhall specialist in the Hounslow / Heathrow area for a friend's '98 Corsa (Engine management light). I think it's either cam/crank position sensor, MAF sensor or plugs/leads - car cuts out occasionaly, can be hesitant. Need someone to read the CEL codes (he is on a shoestring budget - too low for poke and hope - and main dealers!!)

Thanks in advance! Read more

I have received a stone chip on my windscreen (bottom right hand corner on the very edge. It is a standard chip size 2mm diameter (oval/circular shape). It is not very deep (you can feel it with your fingernail) and there is no spiders web sort of effect). I got it from oncoming traffic - so it could not reall have been avoided.

Is this an MOT issue? If so I assume I can get one of these clever chaps who come and drill it out and fill it with a transparent filler?

Any experience on this mych appreciated Read more

How difficult is it to change the seats in a car?

Following on from the back pain thread it seems clear that some cars have very good seats and others are very poor. Is it easy to change over seats? Obviously after market seats such as Recaro would come with a fitting kit however they would be very pricey. Has anyone tried swapping seats from one make of car to another? Are all the seat runners different sizes and the fitting different or is it a fairly standard system? Read more

It is a Mazda 323. The seats are not very great but that seems to be normal for low end cheap hatch backs. It sounds as if changing would be too complicated so I will give it a miss unless I can get hold of more upmarket seats from a higher spec Mazda.
