Tanks Eric Newby - who died yesterday - another travel great that has accompanied on my wanderings accross the world. Brilliant travelouges of a bygone age especially the one about the Hindu Kush and the drive there ! Some brilliant writing about my favourite holidaying area (Snowdonia) in that book as well. Cracking writer, didn't mess around with speed limits, Health and Safety and all that nancy stuff we have to deal with now even to go to the shops. Read, enjoy and remember. Read more
Anyone ever bashed the wing mirror on a golf. The mirrors are colour coded but I seem to have just broken the plastic cover of the wing mirror - glass and motor assembly are OK. Will phone main dealer tomorrow but just wonder whether anyone knows if the cover can be purchased seperately (plus if they know the rough price I'll be prepared!)
Thanks in advance. Read more
If you paint in damp / cold conditions the paint will "bloom", moisture trapped in the paint gives a milky effect. Its better to choose a warmer day and warm the mirror on a radiator before spraying each coat, warm and not hot

Sounds like Wrecks to Riches that's being repeated on Discovery Real Time at the moment.
Does anyone have any idea of the going rate for adding European cover to an insurance policy? (Admiral, FC) Read more

My sister has just bought her 1st car a 106 1.1 (Y reg) I did a service on it at the weekend and came to check over the brakes. I started to take of the wheel nuts and metal fillings followed. I think that the wheel nuts have been tightened on with an air gun and must have been cross threaded.
2 out of 4 nuts have gone but my main concern is the hub itself. I bought some replacment nuts of the same thread (1.25) i think, but the thread in the hub has also been damaged.
I was wondering wether i should get the hubs tapped or buy replacment hubs?
Whats the best course of action?
cheers Read more
Hi Richard sorry i wasnt clear, its the front wheels. The bolts have shed the thread so to speak. I thought about new hubs from a scrappy there must be loads. Its going into the garage for some electrical bits so i might ask my mechanic to sort it as it will probably need new bearings

The Stig lost it on a right hand turn just before a tyre barrier and the car went off the track for quite some distance - the Swedes readily accepted the view that a rear spoiler was an essential addition and the car was retested after the work was done.

What\'s for you won\'t pass you by
Hello,
Just wondered if anyone had experienced the main window switch cluster catching fire? This happened to my Dad's Accord (98 R plate) yesterday. Just wondered if it had happened to anyone else?
Thanks!

I am sure the ignition switch on my saxo has gone.
Last year the heater and the rear screen would not dimissed so I left it for a couple of the weeks off the road.
I ran it again for few days and it started to work again for about 2 weeks and fail again.
I have been quoted £175.00 to fix the problem but I have been told you can fix this problem yourself by by passing the relay?
If this is possible can someone please tell me how to do it.
Thanks

Hi Paul,
This is definitely the ignition switch. If you do a forum search on this subject (or under robin the technician) you will find the details on fitting the relay to overcome the problem.

My seat belt (drivers) in my Citroen AX is always wet through every time it rains. I have tried pouring water all round the windows but could not see where it is getting in. Drain holes are clear and I cannot see any evidence to where the water is coming from. Any ideas?
Regards, Ian Read more
if you take the panel off where the seatbelt sits you will see it sits in a plastic type cup and this is why your belt stays wet.
i would suggest the window is indeed leaking in here as they are on a poor type fastener arrangement
Currently with RAC, but due for renewal and I know I can get a better deal than my current £87/year Solution 1 with the RAC. It's a personal membership jobbie, so I can be in any car, although I'd be happy to have a car-based solution.
I don't like Green Flag, so they're out of the question and I'd like to be with a large company, even though I know a lot of the smaller companies are just as good. I suppose I'm limited to the AA and the RAC!

Cheers for the advice! I hadn't even thought of the Money Saving Expert site, which comes in handy so so often!
I rememebered last night that I have cover through Warranty Direct, so I'll dig out my paperwork and see what they cover. If it doesn't seem good enough, I'll go with AutoAid, seeing as I've always got my credit card on me anyway.
Thanks again!
