Back in June, I replaced the brake pads on my Ford Ka with EBC uprated pads (as suggested in the CBCB) (see also www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=41866 )

Since then, it seems to me - though I have not done any testing under controlled conditions :-) so it may be my imagination - that braking has been significantly improved. It's not that it is now brilliant. It's just that it has been quite acceptable.

So - is fitting uprated brake pads a cheap, simple way to improve the safety of many ordinary cars? Read more

Hi. Was wondering if someone could help. My 1997 Polo was parked in a residential street when someone decided to kick the wing mirror off while going past. MIndless violence as they didn't smash the glass or take anything. The whole unit was on the floor when I found it. The wires seem ok. The mirror itself is cracked and I need a replacement. Any ideas as to how much I should pay to have this done. Added complication is that my car is silver and the wing mirrors were colour matched. How much will that add to the cost? I live in Liverpool so any recommendations of a decent garage would be gratefully received. I have tried the Corkhills VW dealership on in the past which I found to be expensive.

Thanks

I think it is fair to say that the majority of you lot out thier tend to look after your motors. I work at a major airport maintaining aircraft .
I feel i have to warn you against airport parking . you may be tempted to pay extra for parking were the company take your car from you and place it in secure parking. First of all they do not always use any more secure parking than if you had parked the car yourself. Secondly and more important is the way i have seen the the cars treated when out of sight of there owners . Reving a cold engine very hard seems to be a favourite, closely followed by wheel spinning. Out of horror i have personnally challenged these people but they dont care .
My advice is you park the car yourself and take the keys with you.
Be warned... Read more

I hope the mods will permit this one.

For professional reasons I'd like to make contact with a manufacturer of sat nav systems to explore a possible joint venture on behalf of a client of mine.

If the mods are OK with this could you email me via the mods - mods, let me know if there's an easier way for you. Read more

Mods, ignore my message above - we are now in direct contact.

Is there any reason why manufacturers do this? Surely it would be best off driven by the aux drive belt, leaving the cam timing belt to do just what it says - keep everything in sync.

I can't see the aux drive belt being hard to keep correctly timed as long as everything was designed properly.

I can't see any money saving issues as the aux belt needs to be there for PAS, A/C, etc... Read more

Hello,
I am thinking of buying a yaris or a aygo ( cant decided).
The Yaris I have seen is the basic model and so doesn?t have central locking, electric windows or a cd player.
However the car I have at the moment ( a Y reg punto elx) has the central locking, electric windows and a cd player.
Do you think I will miss the electric windows etc ? Has anyone experienced this ?
To be honest I?m not really into cars that much, but just asking because I don?t want to buy it and then wish I hadn?t

thanks

u will miss it all

I missed it too. Years ago I went from a Pug 405 with electric everything, to a Golf with wind-up windows and key operated central locking. Only small things but I occasionally found it inconvenient; used to tell myself not to be lazy, but also thought to myself "why have I taken a backward step with this 'new' car?".

But then I'm a bit of a car nut; if you're not really into cars then it might not bother you as much?

Is this possible to do?

I have a GS300 Mk2. Am leaning towards Supra Twin Turbo Auto, as I'm after a coupe that offers decent handling, reliablity, monster performance and looks cool too. Want the auto, as I am a very lazy person.

(Yes, I like the fast and furious movies!!)

Any other cars you can suggest? Budget is going to be 7k.

What is the worst job you have ever done on a car? By that I mean either the most difficult in itself, or where the most has gone wrong / held you up.

This is prompted by my ENTIRE weekend spent changing the cambelt, fuel pump belt and water pump on the Mondeo. I wasn't expecting this to take an hour, but neither did I expect the 14 that it did take!! Problems encountered:

Seized air-con belt tensioner. Still seized - after unsuccessful use of Plus Gas, had to remove the belt by taking the crank pulley off. Made refitting interesting as well as said crank pulley is a double item also driving the alternator belt. The alternator belt has to go on first. A juggling act like no other, but it's done and it works for now. Replacement tensioner required, but that's a job for another day!
Went to drain the cooling system down only to discover that the aftermarket rad the car is fitted with has no drain plug. Spent over an hour trying to get the bottom hose off (those stupid cheap spring loaded hose clips) removing most of the skin from my knuckles in the process before giving up and using the block drain plug instead.
Over torqued cam pulley made things touch and go with my home made pulley holding tool (cowboy workmanship which is evident all over this car).
No 1 glow plug was not only seized in, but located in such a way in relation to the injection pump and its plumbing that it was an eigth of a turn a time job to both remove and refit it.
Blanking plug for crank timing pin hole fell out of the socket when I removed it and fell down between the air-con pump bracket and the side of the block. Had to remove and carefully support the air-con pump while removing the mounting bracket to get the plug back.
Water pump gasket came off the block only after much careful scraping, and then in hundreds of tiny, well baked pieces.
The lower cover on the cambelt refused to "snap in" to the upper cover. You wouldn't believe how much time I lost here.
The mother of all air-locks was present in the fuel system when re-starting. I have bled the fuel system on this car several times, and this is the one and only time it has decided to soak me and most of the engine bay in diesel when I eased the filter outlet pipe off. At this point I started shouting and swearing at the car believing it to be personal. That's when you know you've really had enough! ;-)

Anyhow the car is now back together, running and all is well, but what an oddyssey! I have no urge to ever tackle this job again, which for someone who normally enjoys working on cars is quite unusual.

That said, it did confirm a couple of things I suspected. The seller of the car (a local-ish dealer) hadn't replaced the tensioners when they did the belt (QH belts, Ford tensioners), the water pump was slightly leaking, and the horrible chattering noise of late on idle was clearly linked to this somewhere 'cos now it's gone.

Good end result, nightmare getting there!

Anyone else had a "never again" job?

Cheers
DP
