A neighbour has parked a car facing uphill with 5 litres in the tank. Tried to start car but would not start , ran battery flat, then asked me for help.
I deduced the problem was probably the incline and told him to go on the main road on the flat where we tried to start it again we had one spark of life from the engine then nothing.
We noticed some disel leaking from the 2nd cylinder plug (probably from the fuel line which feeds to this plug, none of the others were leaking the fuel line leading to/from this plug was also saturated with fuel - but none of the other fuel lines between plugs were wet with fuel. the fuel line seemed to go from one plug to the next, and onto the next running between plugs, if you are familiar you'll know what I'm talking about, I have never looked at a diesel engine before so this was all new to me.
It failed to start or show any life just turned over. we gave up deciding it was probably air locked.
Then we had one more go and found that it would not even turn over, then it turned over but grudgingly (not like before) the leads were warm but my battery was still good and I had my engine revving so it should have been ok.
I don't understand why it suddenly stopped turning over and then only grudgingly? But I was not the one starting the car so it could have been incompetence on the part of the guy who was trying to start it.
Anyways, How do you fix a diesel with a possible airlock in the fuel line? Read more

something TVM has just said on the Raymond Baxter thread has reminded me of a quest i failed miserably on a few years ago........ i'm hoping someone can help.
A long time ago i watched a motor race that was completely enthralling and had me on the edge of my seat..
it was a saloon car type race involving a Camaro, mk1 Escort and a Vauxhall Magnum (Viva type) having an epic battle lap after lap after lap........ it went on for ages...... eventually the Camaro spun off
at some point it was shown on the t.v. under the guise of 100 Great Sporting Moments..
i can't even remember what circuit it was
any clues?......... i'd love to see it again Read more

Yes, it's possible; I did one on a 2.5 Luton many years ago. You'll need a complete turbo engine with everything on it; plus all the odd bits like the front exhaust etc. There's some rewiring necessary; but it's not too complex.
Try and find a complete van that someone's breaking and then you won't be stuck for any of those awkward little bits that you'll inevitably find you need.
I have removed one rear seat belt from my Citroen AX and fitted it to the drivers, due to the mechanism failing on the original. My question is will my car still pass the MOT with three seat belts fitted or do I have to remove the one remaining rear belt to pass?

Bit of advice needed please.Last years Mot emissions test was a little bit tight-too close for comfort so I'm expecting the same problem this coming Tuesday.I've brought the test forward a couple of weeks-it's normally due in the middle of October, because if the ambient temp is cold the cat doesn't seem to warm up too well.I'm hoping for a warmer day earlier in the year. Now the question. Is there any advantage to putting in a tank of Optimax before the test and letting it go through on that or am I best sticking with my usual Shell 95?And is there any advantage to be gaineg from putting in some injector cleaner as well? All thoughts appreciated Read more
Do an italian tune up before you do anything else, although a tank of Optimax will not harm it and may be cheaper than buying a bottle of STP or similar.
I noticed an advert in the autotrader for an ex police LDV Cub whilst looking for a small van.
So I`m wondering how they are sold?

my good lady currently has a 3 door black renault clio 52 plate 1.5 dci extreme. she wants something a bit faster / nippier.
her clio has done 43k and i think she could get at least 4k for it (please, people in the know give me a rough valuation)
she would like a clio sport, which i believe come in a 1.4 and 2.0 litre 172bhp. she would love a mini but its a little out of her price range. out of interest what could we pick up a mini for at auction?
punto's are out of the question for normal reasons and she had one before, dont Know too much about corsa's.

hi, if you were to put a socket on the crankshaft puley bolt and quickly spin the engine over for a couple of seconds with king lead off to loosen the bolt, could you do any damage to the engine? this is on an engine where the cambelt runs on a seperate sprocket not the crankshaft pulley
chris Read more
I have done it several times on different engines. The trick
is to get a good fitting socket (preferably with just the
6 flats in it instead of the 12 point ones). The
arm attached to the socket needs to be as close as
possible to the crank pulley, no 5 inch extensions, etc. The
other end of the arm needs to be supported horizontally. I
usually put an axle stand under it. I also try to
take as much "play" out of the setup as possible so
that the first movement is applying force to the bolt. Usually
the starter only needs a quick flick of the key.
Take care, and if it doesn't work first time, stop before
seriously damaging anything.
I agree I've done it many times with Pug/Cit 1.9td and Ford 1.8td, but as it is said you must have no extension bar to the socket and use a impact type socket for strength. All you need is just a flick on the switch to turn 1/4 to 1/2 a turn of the engine just to loosen the bolt. I turn the engine in gear to remove as much slack as possible before using the starter.

Thanks
You got it all right, the RAC was called and I watched him do it and asked him questions
the black fuel lines are return lines and one was split so replaced.
there is a button to the left hand side of the engine to press to prime the fuel ...it is to be pressed until it gets stiff then not press anymore.
He then said crank it over while he undid two injectors then he retightened the 2 injectors and all was fixed.
The only thing we didn't do was fill the tank first, he's gone off to fill her up now.
