Statistical outlier

Question. If my car currently has 'W' rated tyres, I know I can't go lower than that, but how about 'Y' or 'Z' rated tyres? Is that a higher rating, or just a different rating?

I ask as a lot of the tyres recommended by the Which report this year (thanks Cheddar) are 'Y' or 'Z' rated, and I haven't really got an appreciation of what would be suitable.

If not, anyone got a recommendation for what to fit to a Honda Accord Diesel - 225/45 R17 W ?

Cheers,

Gord. Read more

It is also perhaps a matter of economies of scale in manufacturing in that it is likely to be more cost effective to produce 100,000 tyres with a W rating that 50,000 with a V rating and 50,000 with a W rating.

Don't want to jinx myself but:

The clock on the Toledo reads 60,050.

The cambelt is original.

Previous owner seemed sensible and I doubt it's been thrashed. Has anyone else 'extended' the belt interval on the VAG 1.9 TDI's and lived to tell the tale? Has a full SSH.

I was quoted £200 for the belt on my Audi in
central Manchester so shop around.

If it's an important job you need either a main dealer or a specialist. I recall the price for 1.9TDis was approx 500 uk pds (circa.1998). I always thought it was more difficult to change cam belt on diesels/TDis, hence the high price. So I would certainly want someone familiar with the procedure.

Guys,

Worth a buy & if anyone has one, what options should I be thinking of getting to it?

I'd agree with Michael, although I'm thinking that if you're after the 318 then running costs may be on your list of priorities, if so the 320D is pretty impressive and would make a sensible nearly-new buy, they also normally have a bit of kit on them if bought as an ex-demo.

When my dad was looking to spec one up his list included the Sports Seats, the colour sat nav, blue tooth prep and larger alloys. Don't know if any of that is important to you?

You gonna spend much time in the car?

Looking for some opinions.

I currently have a VW Polo TDi which was bought for fuel economy for my 75 mile commute. I've changed jobs and the car now either sits ont he drive or at the airport.

I'm on the lookout for something interesting that won't break the bank and will still get me to the airport on time to catch the 6.30 am shuttle to Heathrow from Edinburgh.

I've always had a fancy for the Merc CE class but know almost nothing about it. There are reasonably cheap ones out there but am concerned that cars that age may be money pits since my time for diy is almost non-existent.

Any opinions and advice gratefully received.

Forum VAG TDI's

If anyone is planning on buying a VAG TDI in the medium term you may want to hold on.
I understand all the VAG TDI's will fail on the latest US and Canadian emmissions laws due to enter force in 2007 so no doubt they will be working on new and improved diesel engines. Read more

Emissions standards are constantly tightening and as someone else said, this applies to just about all of the manufacturers. As it is VaG have recently gone over to Piezo controlled injectors on their common rail and some PD diesels which is a way of better controlling the injection cycle and hence emissions amongst other things.
VaG are probably ahead of the game compared to many manufacturers outside MB and Honda.

My point is, that a car has to be emissions compliant to be sold in the first place, so what is the advantage in waiting for a car which may comply with a future emission standard.

All the US and Canada have to do now to improve diesel emissions is to sell better quality diesel like wot we have in Western Europe !

my mk3 golf has neither aircon or sunroof and i wondered if there was some kind of cold air filter i could get that would hopefully give me a nice cold breeze through the heater controls.
and just out of interest is it possible to have air con fitted and at what cost Read more

Check that the pollen filter is clean. Try running without the filter and see if the performance of the blower is better. Retro fit aircon would be pricey
