If anyone is planning on buying a VAG TDI in the medium term you may want to hold on.
I understand all the VAG TDI's will fail on the latest US and Canadian emmissions laws due to enter force in 2007 so no doubt they will be working on new and improved diesel engines.

Apologies - if you want to read the story in full check:- canadiandriver.com.

To be fair it is not just VAG that will be effected.

Who else is it ? - Could you let us know please ?

everyone except certain MB engines apparently.
It matters not a jot to us europeans for some while anyway.

According to the article it is as TVM says.

I understand that Toyota have also developed some very clean diesel technology (D-CAT) and have been lobbying the eu to increase the regulations for obvious reasons - they would sell there technology under licence to other car makers - that why I ask because I do not think it is as simple as just MB.
I also think it should matter to the europeans if we are serious about reducing emmissions etc.

Forget the Europeans. No environmental initiatives are worth the paper they're written on unless the Chinese, Indians and Russians are at the party.

I think the changes are mainly concerned with local emissions rather than CO2. And they probably have an element of barrier raising, to protect the current gas guzzler market from even more external competition.

Emissions standards are constantly tightening and as someone else said, this applies to just about all of the manufacturers. As it is VaG have recently gone over to Piezo controlled injectors on their common rail and some PD diesels which is a way of better controlling the injection cycle and hence emissions amongst other things.
VaG are probably ahead of the game compared to many manufacturers outside MB and Honda.
My point is, that a car has to be emissions compliant to be sold in the first place, so what is the advantage in waiting for a car which may comply with a future emission standard.
All the US and Canada have to do now to improve diesel emissions is to sell better quality diesel like wot we have in Western Europe !
