This is not unusual when obtaining quotes, especially if your current cover is several months old.
In addition, if you obtain a quote by phone from an direct insurance company and then attempt the same thing online, the latter will be (normally) a bit lower. It's generally because of lower overheads.
I had this experience with AXA several years ago and asked the phone division representative if it would match its online division's quote (I was already insured by AXA, was seeking other quotes online and did this as an experiment). The answer was No and the reason given was that of higher overheads.
The Martin Lewis website (you've almost certainly seen him on a number of TV programmes discussing various aspects of finance and how to save money) is a very valuable resource and you should not be put off merely as the result of a single experience.
