Hi All
Model is Mazda 6 1.8 petrol, 3 years old.
I'm looking for some advice for this strange problem. It occuers In hot weather when I operate the aircon. After a few miles the engine starts to surge, cycling from 2500 to 3500 revs. It is cleared if I turn the engine off tand hen restart but then returns again.
I would appreciate any advice/comments.
Thanks

This morning, at 6:30am I stopped at the local garage, to fill up the tank. I got out of my car, and another car pulled up in front (facing the wrong way) and a wiry bloke in his 50's got out, and started abusing me with aggressive expletive strewn language in a strong Scottish (Glasgow?) accent. I ignored him, though I think I said "What?" a few times out of surprise. I filled the tank, and he walked up to me, and again started swearing at me. I thought I was going to get beaten up. I probably said "You have no manners" a few times. I paid and the garage attendant said that another customer had called the police. I exited the garage shop, and got back in my car, and chummy pulled up, got out of his car, comes towards me and starts more verbal abuse, with lots of swearing, and a generally aggressive and threatening manner. My ignoring him seemed to do the trick as he then left.
Lord knows what was wrong with this unpleasant individual.
Anyway, should I report this to the local cops? I have his number plate (assuming it is legit) and the attendant was a witness. Is this a crime given that no-one was physically assaulted?

Can anyone tell me who makes a socket suitable for the Punto Turbo Diesel driveshafts, apart from FIAT
36mm across flats, as the setup is very similar to the Pug/Citroen one, but the internal diameter of the boss which locates the disc (and hence the outside diameter of the socket to be used) is only 48mm. The socket needs to be a long one, to fit over the end of the driveshaft, so a standard socket would fit, I think
My usual Pug driveshaft socket is about 52mm outside dia. Only £8 for another, but would have to pay someone to reduce outer diameter, which may mean a cylindrical grinder. Easier to buy the right tool, I think
I have just changed one of the outer CV boots by removing the shaft and hub, and stripping the shaft down from the inner end. Don't want to do this for the next one.

Thank you very much for your response. Sorry for delayed answer, but I wanted to see if any FIAT ("Fix It Again Toni") mechanics responded.
Oldman. Have to admit this seemed interesting. Will borrow 36mm standard socket to see if it will fit. Will have to use 18yr old son's foot, and he is only availably circa 2pm (resting after A levels). Undid 309 wheel bearing last week, and screwed the end off my Laser powerbar (end available at £7)
Number Cruncher. As an ex engineer this is the ideal, but cost of Snap on for one job would make it cheaper to go to local garage. It is the ideal solution, which I prefer. Like things "Spot on" but I may not do this job, as remaining boot seems OK
Chicksfan. Ideal answer (right tool and not Snap On prices) but I am not au fait with Ebay, and have the Crinkly Generations fear of bidding incorrectly and finding an elephant and gorilla delivered the next morning. Will set daughter on this if it proves necessary.
Thank you all for your responses. They were all appreciated. I have tried a FIAT site and been told the socket is 32 mm. If it were 32 mm I would not have a problem...
Thanks again
I was just wondering, having not bought tyres for 5 years or so, if the sizes are in metric now? I imagined so as Brussels would have clamped down on that wouldnt they?
Just made me think as I was fitted some of those god awful Halfords wheel trims to my Mazda, which say 13 inch but need some serious modification to fit a 13 inch wheel! 101 uses for a hammer... Read more
Err, please see my first post, DD!
Oops! sorry SjB.
I'm potentially going to look at a 2001 Ford Focus TDdi Zetec Estate today. I know they are not as good as the TDCi, but budget doesnt stretch to that. Its up for £2995 with 12 months warranty, but its got 123k on the clock (full main dealer history).
Is this a good deal? Is the mileage a bit too high even for the diesel?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

£2250 at auction if as described is what you would
have to pay at auction.>>
But that again is an assumption, not a fact...:-)

The electric window no longer works. Would appreciate any advice on fault finding.
Is it possible to get an explicit manual for this car on the net. I was a little disappointed with the Haynes manual.

My trusty little '96 Polo has developed a whining noise that pitches in at about 30mph, almost like a vibration coupled with road noise..
It eminates from the front nearside wheel, and sound like the tyre's running almost flat. I've checked the condition/pressure, both ok.
Any ideas? Read more
Many thanks; not as bad as I'd feared.
Hi all,
Whats this stretch (eastbound) like between 6 and 7.30am on a weekday morning...is it as bad as people make out ?? Read more
I often do this stretch at 8.30am ish, usually with no problem - it's the A34 to Reading (J13-J11) section that often gets clogged up.
Hi,
I've a real puzzler with my 1998 Polo diesel. It has a 1.9D AEF engine with a Lucas mechanical pump with accelerator cable that has now covered 105k miles. The starting symptoms which are rapidly getting worse are:- when the engine turns over there is an alarming knocking sound and the whole engine rocks violently. This only occurred when the engine was hot but now does it also when cold. It used to start after 1 or 2 seconds but now takes a couple of 5-6 secs + fully depressed accelerator, I've put new heater coils in, new timing belt and tensioner, checked the timing multiple times also tried with advanced and retarded levels, checked fuel supply to injectors, tested cylinder compression which are Nos1 - 20bar nos2 - 23bar nos3 - 21bar nos4 - 17bar. Thing is when it does go it sounds fine, pulls well and there is neither strange noises nor smoke (black, white or blue). + if on starting the stop lever, found on the top of the pump, is activated then without fuel supply the engine turns as it should without the alarming knocking sounds. I would be grateful for any help with this. Cheers Jim. Read more
Hi Number Cruncher, The pressures I had tested were the cylinder pressures and not the injectors which I now wish I had done.
Re the injectors can you give me an idea of shape or style that I can look for.
Thanks -Jim
My 18 yr old wants to learn to drive. Great idea, but I want him to buy his own car. I'll help with the insurance but I really don't want him in mine. If its his own money he'll be more careful (I hope).
So, we are looking for diesel, economy, low insurance, and bangernomics to keep the cost down. So whats the best thing to go for ? Read more
Oldman, Physics, graphics, resistant materials (whatever THAT is), chemistry and, yes, art!! No idea what he will study next - pubs and clubs I suspect! Micra (new shape) particularly good for tall lads as has good headroom and well set pedals and is nippy too. If not for insurance I am sure he would have gone for a boy-racer type car.

This morning as I reversed out of the drive, I noticed across the road a large black van surrounded by numerous men in combat gear, carrying side arms, and accompanied by several police cars and uniformed police. Luton eh? What a place.
