We have had a loose plug lead which I think has caused the emgine management light to come on. Is there any way to reset it myself without asking a dealer please?

You could try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, might work. Check you have rear brake lights, switches often fail and trigger the engine management light on VWs

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but plans for a by-pass here have been looked at and shelved for the best part of a decade. I can't see anything happening until at least 2010.

If you see a vehicle for sale and the owner tells you its still subject to a lease purchase agreement - is this vehicle still ok to buy if the owner tells you he's selling it then paying off the lease company with the proceeds which presumably happens a fair bit?. Obviously on doing an HPI on the vehicle it will show up as having finance against it?? What safeguard is there for a buyer in this situation? I'm thinking you can telephone the lease company (with the vehicle owners consent) to check out the story?? Read more

matstro

ok, thanks for the advice. Its what I thought really. To HPI a vehicle and buy despite the results isn't a good thing to do. Shame, because it was a hard to find vehicle and everything else about it was right. Interestingly, I asked the seller why they were selling such a vehicle via Ebay and not Autotrader and the reply was that Ebay was cheaper - I don't see the logic in ths answer as I think selling on Ebay for 7k brings final value fees of three figures??

Thanks again. I won't be buying it!

Apparently NASA scientists are surprised that bird droppings have survived on the outside of the shuttle, despite the thunderstorms before launch, the 300,000 gallons of cooling water sprayed on it at launch, the 0-17,500 mph in one minute acceleration and the associated temperatures.

I'm surprised at the implication no NASA scientist has ever washed a car !

p.s. - should they send somebody out to clean it off, before it eats through those thermal tiles ? ;-)

We were talking at work the other day about car running costs and one of the subjects that came up was tyre wear.

I said that I though that Joe Average, driving a regular car, in a regular manner should expect to be getting about 20000 miles from his front tyres if on a FWD and a bit more on rears if FWD. I didn't know so couldn't offer an opinion on RWD cars.

One of my collegues was astounded that you should get that much, the other was shocked that you would get that little.

What do other folks think ? I'm not talking about specialist brands, sports cars, hard driving, off roaders etc, etc.
Just typical Joe Motorist.

My wife's Focus has developed an intermittant problem with the central locking. Sometimes it works, sometimes total silence.

New battery fitted to Key - no improvement.

Is this likely to be a faulty keyfob? Or prob with car? Read more

AndyT

Try using the key in the door lock for a bit, and see if the problem still occurs.

You can still get the (2 press on key fob) dead-lock function to work by turning to open and then lock with-in 2 secs...confirmed by the indicators flashing twice...and also the window function by holding the key in either position for a few secs.

Assuming this is the previous version Focus of course...

Sounds like its been lowered, original springs are black. If you go ahead and fit new springs you'll need to add new rear bumpstop to your budget, possibly dampers and front topmounts too.
