Hi,

Could any members give me their advice on what parts I should replace when I do the cambelt on my Xantia. I expect that the tensioner and waterpump would be a good idea also a new 'alternator' belt but what about the other idlers? The last cambelt change was at 103*** it's now at 137102 ish. I guess I need to check the crankshaft pulley for signs of failure.

I've had a search but can't find a full example.

Also has anyone had this sort of work done if so how much did it cost and what was changed?

Thanks.

Steve.

Hi All,

Could anyone tell me where the washer pump is located on a '98 Fiesta? Also, what's the best method of removal?

Cheers,

Why do you wish to access it?

If it has just stopped working you may find it is only blocked with a gooey sludge that accumulates from mixing different screenwash formulations.

I cleared mine in a 96 fiesta using air from (I think) a footpump connected to the pipework to the washers.

Worth a try.

Had this problem last year on my Zafira, also during a very hot spell. Hasn't bothered me since.

Is it usual to have a small amount of play on the rear wheels. I have adjusted them as per the instructions (hand tighten the hub nut so you can just move the thrust washer with a screwdriver). The car has done 153000 miles and I think they are the original bearings, which I plan to replace soon. If they are shot will anything drastic happen if I carry on using the car?

Any advice welcome
Thanks

Can anyone advise on how to replace the door seals on a 406 (HDI saloon 2000 X). Specifically, it's the window seals outside the car and the seal at the bottom of the doors that runs from front to back.

The front window seals have a screw inside the door - just undo this screw and pull the seal out? The bottom seal looks like it has little snap-in fittings but I don't want to pull it off just in case!

And what are these bits likely to cost? I hope not a lot...

Thanks,

Door bottom seal is about £15 from Peugeot. Don't know about fitting, but the garage did that (and a couple of other small jobs) with half an hour's labour on my 1996 car.

My Golf IV 1.6 air-con works ok, but in the last couple of days of high heat, switching it on has had 2 effects - a reasonable loss of power on the engine, coupled with a sort of 'knocking' sound. Gets louder as you rev the engine more.

When I open the bonnet at idle, I can see the engine sort of 'vibrating' more than usual - turn the air-con off, all back to normal.

Any ideas ? Read more

yes, what i thought, the drive belt - does it run at the front of the engine ?

i once read somewhere that it was possible for VOSA to check the car and if it passes, it can be removed from the registe as being a write-off?

is there any truth in this, discuss? Read more

That site you refer to says they can remove vehicle from the register after an inspection. I'd like to know how? The car I'm running now (and had five years) is on the register as a class D - uneconomical to repair (at factory spare prices). The fact the a new front and rear bumper costs around £1500 to replace and paint was enough to write it off. Replacements form a scrap yard costs next to nothing so an inspection would show no damage (there wasn't any underlying damage behind the bumpers). If it only cost £200 to get an inspection and off the register then both the insurance companies and small traders would be doing this all the time.

Something odd somewhere. The register, AFAIK, records total losses to insurance companies - so no matter what is done to repair a vehicle, it will always have been a total loss.

I understand some of the insurers have been "cheating" and registering cars and bikes as cat "X" - this is not recorded and thus gets them a better price at salvage auctions as they can go back on the road without anyone knowing.

There are a couple of white-ish rings on the dark kitchen work surface. I expect SWMBO has put hot pans down directly on it. Is there any way to get the rings off? Read more

Forum dead flies
scfc_151

just wondered if anyone has a certain washer fluid/wiper blade that really does get rid of dead flies?

Ive looked through the previous posts and have tried everything from concentrate halfords, carplan etc to fairy liquid and meths etc.

Ive never found anything that doesnt just smear the flies all across my view. Obviously the weather makes its more difficult to get rid of but all the washer fluids ive use that say they get rid of them just make matters worse! Read more
