Last night driving home from some friend's Silver Wedding party, we had to keep my 9 year old daughter awake so we started a game of I spy. After some of the usual items we started getting slightly silly ones. My wife came up with something beginning with SM. The answer is motoring related, so see if you can get it.

If after a number of tries I will give the clue my wife gave. For the record we did not get the answer, but we did laugh a lot at it.

Keep guessing until I either give the clue or acknowledge the correct answer.

I'm sure there are HJ'ers who can recommend insurance companies offering mini cab insurance quotations.
I'm currently with Zurich, they won't do it. Read more

I passed my test in February 2003 - do I need to take an additional test before towing any type of trailer? Read more

PhilW

"You can tow a trailer, so long as it does not exceed the weight of the vehicle you are driving. If the total weight of car and trailer exceeds 3,500 kg then the trailer can not weigh more than 750 kg."

So if I had a trailer weighing 1700 kg I could tow it with a car weighing 1700 kg but not with one weighing 2000kg?
If my car weighed 2751 kg I could only tow a 750 kg trailer?

Or perhaps I have totally misunderstood............?????

Hello,

My step-sisters 98 R Pug 306's brake lights have stopped working. We have chacked all fuses, rear light clusters and wiring around the boot area. It is the rear brake lights and high vis that are not working. Rear head lights, reversing, indicators and foglights all work. Also the fuse that controls the brake lights also services the interior light, dash lights and cig lighter and they are all unaffected. Could it be the beake pedal switch? I ve had a feel round for a switch or wires but can feel anything. If it is, this is it a big job?

Any ideas will grately appricuated.. Read more

They say that life begins at 40.

A friend of mine, who is approaching that age, has decided to have a change of occupation and is preparing to become an HGV driver.

Apart from suggesting that:

(1) He keeps away from the M25 :D)

(2) He should watch the film 'Convoy'

(3) He should compile a list of good roadside places to eat such as the Salt Box Cafe just off the A50 near Uttoxeter and another one at South Mimms (the name of which escapes me)

what advice and tips would you give him from your experience?

Thanks to all who contributed answers on this subject.

ZEBRA.......Thanks especially for that tip about the 'Truckstop Guide'. I treated myself to a copy. Very useful info' and excellent value :D).

Morning all,

Been a bit of a prize turnip over the weekend, tried to negotiate quite a tight turn in local multistory, thought had got through then heard the dreaded scraping as rear n/s door caught the brickwork.

Has left quite a nasty gash that about 5 cms long, but spread out over a height of about 10 cms. Is very uneven, and gone back to the metal in one part (although not extensively). Think a lot of it will polish out, but will need a respray to get the worst of it out.

Can anyone recommend a good, cheap resprayer in the Weston Super Mare area? Many thanks for the help, and before anyone says it guess the certificate for advanced muppetry is in the post.

Most galling bit was decided didn't like the bay I was going for after all so went off somewhere else! Read more

About 6 months ago I used a company called Littleknocks - www.littleknocks.co.uk - to repair the wife's new Scenic which was attacked by a gate post. Two other companies said it needed a new door skin, LittleKnocks said they could use their "invisible repair" technique.

Upshot was a superb job (perfect paint and lacquer match too) plus an unasked for repair to another small scrape on the other side of the car because "we had some paint left over".

In addition, they were very friendly, efficient and I paid less than £200. A very satisfied customer.

Their main outfit is in Harefield, Middlesex and they have another branch in Wokingham.

A tragedy.

Total folly towing a tank behind a toyota using only a tow rope! Read more

Not quite as tragic, but I witnessed two fools trying to pull a Rover 800 up our 1 in 10 slope street using an L' reg Fiesta this weekend. The noise when the tow rope gave way was interesting and the smell of buring clutch is still in my nostrils!

- Anyone got any experience of driving the Volvo V70/S60/V50 with the D5 engine and a Geartronic automatic gearbox?

I didn't think that diesel torque matched well with an auto box?

Is the D5 worth a lot more than the alternative 2.0D lump I can get in a V50?

Thanks, N. Read more

My old boss has a 04 plate V70 with the D5 lump & geartronic box.

It was quick to drive in fully auto mode & even quicker in semi automatic mode.

Also used to get 39 ish mpg how ever hard it was thrashed.

I had a strange occurrence on Saturday. I drove the car (2000X 1.9TDi 115, 71k) to friends for a world cup/birthday party, and got caught in some heavyish traffic in temps of 31degC. Occasionally the car would shudder and I could feel severe ?wobble? through the gearstick. When I pulled up at friends? house with the driver?s window down I could hear a loud hammering noise from the engine compartment!

At all times the gauges read normal, and the next morning the car started and ran normally.

I suspect it may be related to the heat that afternoon, as the climate control seemed to be working quite hard.

Any ideas as to what it could have been and what I should do about it?

Cheers

Pat

Many thanks for the replies.

The car has been running perfectly for the last two days, though I haven't been caught in any slow-moving traffic. The climate control does seem to be working hard (high fan speed) when it's hot outside (30 deg) and it's set to auto.

I'll see if my local garage can give it a once over.

Thanks again.
