Good afternoon all!
I need a help not to choose a car but to choose to buy or not to buy. Situation is complicated for me. I like to drive but had to sell my car two years ago because it was too expensive to keep it but not use it. I work in central London, so have to use public transport. So I need a car only to visit my friends sometimes and make short trips in UK (hiking holidays) without travelling in other peoples cars (no freedom of choice where to go, how to go, where to stop and so on). I would estimate annual mileage about 5 thousand miles or less. But my budget is very limited. Do I have any chance to find reliable car for this amount of money? I was thinking about Nissan Sunny, small Honda Civic, Ford Fiesta or Rover 200-25. My friends are sure that for this money I can buy only rubbish and will spend a lot on fixing all breakages.

I need 3 new tyres on my car. I have narrowed it down to Toyo Proxes T1-R in a 205/50/R15 size. Two questions...
1. I have a Pirelli P6000 on the rear nearside which is a couple of months old and does not need replacing. Is it advisable to have one (Toyo) directional tyre on one side and the non-directional Pirelli on the other of the same axle?
2. I am ordering via a web based tyre seller. Do I need to tell them which side of the car the new directional tyre is going on?
Thank you Read more
I would get 3 P6000s, better really to have the same tyres alround and there is not much wrong with P6000s. Also directionals are a pain if you need to move them around, I know, I have them on my Mondeo.
my friend has a 99 206 auto. her indicators keep going off for no reason, and the dealer wants to charge her for it. she thinks there was some free fix offered by peugeot for this problem, and the CBCB says that the free fix was offered from jan 2003. Does that mean the fix was offered for cars registered after jan2003 or if an owner complained after jan2003?

90% chance it will be the stalk thats starting to fail - these are very common and cause all manner of strange issues with the indicators.
No need to trouble a Peugeot dealer - GSF list the stalks at £26.50 (with front fogs) or £36.50 (without front fogs), and they are very easy to fit. Undo the screws under the steering wheel, remove the cowling, clip old stalk out, clip new one in and replace the cowl.
Can anyone recommend a good one? I was looking at Warranty Works website - does anyone know anything about them?
Cheers,
Allie

Aprilia & rip - That is a very sensible suggestion, but I worry that it requires some sort of self control not to touch the money - which I don't have!

On the news that Peugeot are closing car manufacturing @ Coventry due to costs of manufacturing and probably poor sales. Wonder who is next? Read more
Just heard on the radio (I'll caveat that by saying it
was Radio 1 and sometimes the Sun is in depth compared
to Radio 1's news output) that the local council's idea for
the factory site is a casino. And it's alright everyone, all
2000 odd of you, we know that you're skilled workers, but
you can retrain to work at the casino.
So that's alright then.
Very unlikely that they'll want ex-car workers to work in a casino. In fact its unlikely casino owners will even want natives - they'll bring in East Europeans who can be paid less and effectively have no employment rights.
From our local newspapers...
SEVENTY-SIX Eastern Cape pilgrims were saved from a dangerous situation that could have led to a tragedy yesterday when the Ekurhuleni Metro Police caught their bus driver doing 153km an hour on the N3 outside Johannesburg.
The bus driver had been taking 65 adults and 11 children back to the Eastern Cape after a religious pilgrimage to Moria in Limpopo.
The police action took place as the national death toll went up to 101 ? compared with 241 for the five-day break last year.
When officials finally stopped the fully-laden bus and arrested the driver, they found it had, among other things, defective brakes and a bent chassis and axle.

And SA drivers are - in general
with some exceptions - not noted for their high levels of
skills, competence or adherence to rules.
More than half of South African drivers either have:
1) NO license
2) A fraudulently issued one
3) a 'bought' one.
Also, there is no compulsory insurance.

£11.75 is not a fortune when comparing with what some dealers charge.
Bite the bullet.

Oh and just to add to my comment above - I had a CRV once and it was great - but HJ reckons that if you do need some off road capability with good on road manners then buy an X-trail
A few weeks back I spilled 1/4 pint of milk on my new Golf's carpet. It immediately soaked in and no amount of cleaning can remove the smell of sour milk.
Short of changing the carpet I don't know what to do.

Im thinking of buying the mark 2 facelifted Clio. Just thought id put something out on here to see what people think of it.
What do people think of an 03 1.4 for about £5500.
HJ said the chasis was old but it ticks all the boxes for me.
Any comments greatly appreciated

Wife has a 98 Clio 1.6 so also clearly pre facelift, we have had it since 2001 when it had only done 4k miles, now 39k, yes the sunroof rattles when open, it had a power steering fluid leak from a pressure switch, a new back box a couple of years ago and a new battery a few weeks ago. I detect a slight blowing from somewhere near the front of the exhaust which will need attending to prior to the next MOT. The cambelt was done at 5 years by Renault Minute, 200 quid inc oil and filter.
All in all a great car, fun to drive and gutsy performance.
If you don't use a car often, you could rent when needed.
This might seem expensive - but all your costs are known and well controlled.
Your 1K car could be scrap at anytime. You have to buy insurance - and I would recommend breakdown cover also for the hiking holidays.
All this is included when it's a rental.
It might be expensive on a per-day basis, but it doesn't sound like you need a car on too many days.
