Friend is considering purchase of nearly new(04 reg+) Td4 freelander. Not my cup of tea and don,t know much about them myself.Anybody out there know about any potential problems to look for?.
|
Might I suggest Truthful Peter's vehicle-by-vehicle listing? *grin*
Simply hit the car-by-car button on the left of the screen, and HJ will tell you all about it.

In which the following line appears....
"By 1994 second failures of previously repaired 1.8s on 1997 - 2000 Freelanders due to bore liners dropping and a shortage of used replacement engines was putting a lot of them off the road"
1994 ??

C'Mon...
Just look at the length of HJ's report, and the Looonnnng list of recalls, shake your head, and walk away ....

...to a Honda CRV or Nissan X-Trail, perhaps?

was the TD engine made by/designed when BMW owned rover?
|
I believe the Td4 is a BMW engine.
But still agree with the rest of the thread - walk away.
I appreciate this is a specific issue but a colleague had one (Td4) - 1 month out of warranty and the fuel pumps went (apparently they have 3 in total and 2 failed - I think) - anyway Landrover charged him a fortune to fix - forget good will they do not know the meaning - also know some friends of friends who have had them and every one has a horror story to tell

No; "1994" as in "I don't think they made them then!"
As for the Freelander itself, I can't say I'm all that keen on it.

My neighbours wife had a realy nice 1.8 Freelander from almost new. The other week I was speaking to them and she now drives a Pug 307 the same age as the Freelander. When I asked why, they said that the issues with the Freelander were so persiostent that they just got-rid even though effectively losing at lot of money.

Oh and just to add to my comment above - I had a CRV once and it was great - but HJ reckons that if you do need some off road capability with good on road manners then buy an X-trail
