Hi all,
for the last 5 years ive just driven old citroen xantias. Ex taxis that i have purchased for 500-800 quid at a time from my father who has used them for the previous few years. They have done me great aside from one of two problems, the worst being the heater matrix once that cost about 350 to fix.
Anyway, im bored of that now, so im looking for a new car. Somthing between 1500-2000 that is nice to drive. I was looking at an old bmw 3 series, 96ish.
What would you guys reccomend? Read more
Recently I've been having a problem with my Sharan. This began with a brief judder whilst in 4th doing 30, the fault light then soon flashed and as the problem didn't reappear the light stopped flashing after a day or so. A few weeks later the same thing happened and reappeared every few weeks or so. As it was due a service I had the guys run a diagnostic check but they could find no problem. The problem now is more serious in that the judder seems to have been replaced by loss of power. This can happen on a motorway or anywhere and usually occurs climbing a hill, regardless of gear. Yesterday I drove on the M3 and whilst climbing a gradual incline power appeared to just drop away (the engine does not die though) and the car slowed to around 30mph forcing me off onto the hard shoulder. This problem resurfaced time and again on my way home. By chance I realised that if I turned off the engine and then restarted all was well, at least for a short time anyway. So I'm wondering if this could be some kind of sensor problem that disappears upon turnoff/restart when the sensor is reset.
Can anyone help with an idea of what the problem maybe and what approximate cost I'm looking at for fixing? Any help most appreciated. Read more

A friend of mine has a new vehicle, fitted with a Panasonic radio CD player(model CQ-C111OAN).She wants to play music thru it off a mini disc.We have connected it using the phono inputs on the back of the Panasonic unit but, presumably, there must be someway of selecting this input, which we cannot find.Anyone know how to turn on these inputs? Update-their are two types of these things, one transmits to any radio tuned to it,the other plugs into the aerial socket, thereby avoiding interference. We have gone for the latter,£30 from Maplins, called an FM modulator.
The with the car being dragged downhill by the caravan its towing. Does anyone have a link or know where I can find it online.

Classic - I once saw a similar, but not quite so dramatic miss match which involved a Ford Fiesta Mk 3 1.1 with 5 up and a 4 berth caravan full of the gear for the five. The smell of burning clutch as it tried to leave the traffic lights was truly obnoxious!
Just been messing around with First Alternative's online quote thing for car insurance, for me in my Dad's Rover 75 CDT.
They quoted... wait for it... 4800 POUNDS! Record there, I think. Will carry on being a named driver for some time to come!
Particularly galling as I read in the local paper a while back the court reports, and countless people being fined 50 pounds-ish for having now tax, insurance, MOT, or license. Read more
Aston, that sounds like an excellent quote. I was 29 years old, 5 years no claims on a t reg Xsara and was paying £470. Companies don't like young drivers full stop I think.
Please help me decide...
I have a 95 Cavalier with just under 68k on the clock. It is in good condition with a nice set of alloy wheels too.
I have just replaced the heater matrix (£250), the exhaust (£155) and it has failed its MOT. I needed cv boots and brake pipe on rear. Garage quoted £158, but has since informed me that shoes needed replacing too at extra £80 -90. Then I get another call, cylinders are gone too - overall I need to spend £350.
He has done cv boots £90 and reckons another £100 to get through MOT bare minimum.
We have just moved to the area - public transport costs £6.50 a week less than petrol, and that's just the school run. It is a big car, tax is high etc. Should I fix and sell with MOT? or pay the man £90 and scrap? Or sell as is? Or keep and spend £350?
What should I do - I am stuck on this one. Please answer soon, I need to let mr mechanic know.....
thanks in advance Read more
Thanks guys, I think I will get it through the MOT and then sell.
Thank you
Hi all,
I own a Mk3 Golf TDI. If I wanted to, and had access to, would I be able to use 100% biodiesel in my car or would I have to adapt it ? I think I can use the 95petro/5bio mix but what about the really pure stuff ???
Cheers

My journey from work up the motorway has been made tolerable by the Company of Johnnie Walker for the past few years.
So what's the opinion of tonight's show with the replacement presenter?

I would not buy an Imreza: the maintenance costs on a high mileage one will be crippling.
I disagree with all on BMWs: buy a high mileage one . Provided it has service history the basic design is strong...and maintenance is not expensive..
But you must be choosy and demand a HPI paid by vendor and correctly carried out ( a problem with all these cars). (VIN numbers, etc.)
