whops

I have a 2000 focus tdi cl, it lost power when driving, ie, the revs dropped tp 1000 rpm and the accelerator pedal did nothing. when i turn the engine off and start it up again it goes back to normal and then does it again randomely. I have investigated under the bonnet and found a broken wire at the back on a multi plug. This has been repaired and seemed to solve the problem but it has started again. Any ideas? Should mmention also the glow plug light flashes when the revs drop Read more

I have a newish Focus 1.6 which is fitted with a Motorcraft Calcium battery. I was wondering if it is possible to charge this with a regular battery charger, as I've heard that this may damage Ca batteries, is this true ? Read more

Calcium batteries don't like being overcharged. Some older battery chargers are not well regulated (basically they're just a transformer and a bridge rectifier), so I would invest in a new one with accurate voltage regulation. The Gunson's 'Gold' is not bad for the money. I've had one for about 5 years and used it to charge all manner of batteries of varies cars and had no problems. It never goes over 14.5V.

my p reg meganne has started squealing each time I start up. Someone has said it's prob just fanbelt that needs replacing. That seems really easy. Is it likely to be this simple or could it be something more expensive? Read more

Thanks for your help, feel relieved that it probably isn't going to cost an arm and a leg to sort out. It is just on starting and not when turning.

Hi

What type of thread is used on Ford OHV (Kent, Valencia, Ensura-E, HCS) engines? Is it just an interference fit?

I remember a lecture on something similar which IIRC gave even stresses on each turn, although I'm not sure as those lectures weren't assessed :-)

Mike, I'm not aware that these bolts have any specific name - I rather doubt it.

I quite often read about a car's improved ride and handling, reduced NVH & improved safety due to an increase in the stiffness of the car's body/chassis.

This is particulalry so when a new model comes out e.g. the new Golf is 40% stiffer than the last one etc.

But does anyone know how you can compare one car against another e.g. A Honda Accord Vs VW Passat Vs Ford Mondeo. Presumably to do so you would need to know what the torsional stiffness values are and where they are recorded.

Can anyone advice where I could find this information.

Thanks in advance

If you want to feel how stiff a car is, push
your fingers into the gap between door and body from the
inside while the car is traveling. Some flex so much they
pinch your fingers.

I'm so glad my kids don't read this, because they would try it...

The dashboard display on my punto keeps telling me "gearbox failure", however the car seems to be driving fine. Am I looking at a problem with the display/computer/sensors or am I likely to be calling for recovery soon?

Just wondered if anyone else has been on the receiving end of worrying messages from their dash? Read more

thanks for the advice, I'll try and get it to the Fiat folks asap.

Hi:
I have just changed the switch that lights up when the ignition is on, indicating that the air bag and ABS are ok. The problem I now have is that the ABS light stays on. It would appear that the previous owner took the bulb out!! for this very reason. Does anyone why this light would stay on all of the time. Since I have had the car, which is not long, the red warning light which indicates that the hand brake is applied is also on all of the time, although I have had new pads and dics fitted. Does anyone know if these are conected??

Many Thanks

My Passat (99 V plate) has "ABS FAULT" indicated after I've picked it up after a steering rack gaiter replacement to get through the MOT - should the garage doing the work/MOT have given it a pass?

Their response was that it's been disturbed and should correct itself within a few miles (I'm still waiting). I think they've forgotten to reconnect a sensor. Any ideas? Read more

I do agree that you should take it back to the garage though - they will have inadvertantly caused the problem.

Ho to open the boot of an Skoda Estelle?

I think that is what the car is called, it is an 1989 model that has the engine in the boot. I need to open the boot, but don't know how to do it.

Anyone know? Read more
