I'm looking to change the fuel filter on my girlfriends Corsa 1.0 and the depressurizing of the fuel system looks a bit tricky having had a look at the Haynes manual.
I did this job on my own Primera a couple of weeks ago and all I had to do was remove the fuel pump fuse and try to start the engine - this did the depressurizing.
Any advice for the corsa? The manual mentions fuel rails and such without any pictures to help me find where they are talking about! Read more

For a few liquids, the bulk modulus is listed in archaic units and in units suitable for calculation below

Petrol 150,000 psi 1.03 GPa
Skydrol 340,000 psi 2.34 GPa
Water 310,000 psi 2.14 GPa

So, for petrol, a change in pressure of 10 MPa results in a 1% volume change. Bulk modulus is important at the pressures involved in common rail diesels.

The square root of bulk modulus over density does govern the longitudinal wave speed in fluids, just as quasi-longitudinal wave speeds in solids are governed by the square root of Young's modulus over density (~5 km/s in steel). Indeed, the sound speed in air, commonly written as square root of gamma * R * T can be recast as the square root of an 'elastic' constant divided by density.

However, Aprilia is quite right to point out that the expansion of rubber pipes, and the compression of entrapped bubbles is, in practice, responsible for most compliance in automotive fluid systems.

It had become very slow and kept crashing, so...I've spent the weekend reformatting and reinstalling my Toshiba Sat Pro SP2100 from the recovery CD.

The CD installed XP Pro, I then put on Zone Alarm, AVG and AdAware SE. Next was t'internet, which configured to the Netgear router first time and fair whizzed down the wires. I then updated the definitions of AVG, ZA and AdAware.

I went to Microsoft to get the XP patches, one of which was SP2.
Ever since then the laptop has taken an age to boot up, ZA protests, and internet performance is dreadful.

I've tried switching the XP firewall off to stop clashes with ZA, but this hasn't helped. I'm beginning to think I should uninstall SP2.

Any ideas as to what is happening and how to deal with it?

Thanks

carriageway?

I'm going to embarrass myself by asking the above question. I was always under the impression it was two lanes going eitherway separated by a barrier.

However, I've started taking a more scenic route home and come across one which is and isn't.

You enter it from a 40mph limit and get hit with NSL signs. As you begin, it is separated from the other carriageway for only 50-100 yards by a barrier connected to a bridge. Then, nothing separates it bar a small grass verge. If you carry on going it merges into one lane and then back into two. Slip roads feed on and off this road which is broken up by roundabouts.

Would I be correct in thinking that a 60mph limit is enforced along the entire stretch? Like I say - I'm sorry to ask but it's such a wide open road but the only "Dual Carriageway" I've come across with no separating barrier so despite having what you could call a central reservation, it isn't much to stop you careening off into the other carriageway.

Any ideas?

Sorry for not remembering names but someone said roundabouts separating stretches
mean it's a 60 limit .......

If you're thinking of Marlot, then what he said was "Note that roundabouts on dual carriageways are 60mph limit unless otherwise posted according to my police friend!".

It's the roundabouts that have the 60 limit ~ unless posted otherwise ~ not the roads.

Arrived back at car to find battery flat due to radiator fan running all the time. After recharging battery and starting the engine the fan stops, but when the ignition is switched off the fan still runs fast. The fan stops when the ignition is in the on position. The keypad immobiliser doesn't require a code to start the car. Also the coolant temperature, brake, and oil pressure lights are on dimmly, when the ignition key is turned to off, or key is out. Also sometimes when I turn the engine off it runs for a up to 30 seconds. The car runs OK with no other problems. Has anyone any idea what could be the problem.

Glad to have helped. Thanks for coming back with the outcome; always nice to know what it was.

I was hapy to save hundreds of pounds by servicing my VW Touran at a private garage instead of a VW dealer but not quite so thrilled to learn that he was not able to clear the 'Service Now!' message from the screen. According to my local VW dealer I must pay 20 pounds for him to connect his computer to the engine and clear the message. He would also like me to come in at 7am so that the computer is available. Wait a minute...if I'm a paying customer...? Anyway - is there a way of configuring the message system manually, via PC etc? I also need to change the screen language from German to English so that I don't keep getting messages saying 'place towel on deckchair' etc etc Read more

You expect to take the car somewhere else and then get VW to reset it for you for nothing?

One of my employees wants to urgently transfer money from his NatWest account in UK to his sister in Johannesburg ,South Africa whose husband has walked out on her after 35 years.

She has no bank account in her own name in SA, no income and is panicking .

Any suggestions as to best and cheapest ways of transferring money in these circumstances will be appreciated.

I would also like to find out what she can do in the short term for support and help in Johannesburg. Read more

It gets updated from time to time. Where I live is now much clearer than it used to be and I can see my old E34 parked outside my house. I got rid of the E34 in May last year.

Hi ,I'm after more help again.
I've changed front and rear brake pads on my BMW 320D (E46)a few weeks ago, but the warning light still remains on. Anyone know, does it need re-setting by BMW, or have I just not made a good enough connection with the sensors?? Thank you

After an incident with a rectractable bollard I'm left with a crack of about an inch long in my oil sump. Replacing the sump is a straight forward task (once I've sourced one), but I was wondering in the existing sump could be repaired. I guess the sump is cast from some type of alloy, can these cast alloys be welded in any way?

Thanks for the help Read more

misterbarbel

Thanks for the replies guys. I took the sump to a local aluminium welding specialist, the fix was £10! A lot cheaper than £77+vat VW wanted for a new sump.

I have recently restored a 1960 MK2 and installed a new remote servo (Lockheed) together with new master cyl, brake lines and hoses and new calipers. The system is filled with Castrol brake fluid (not silicon).
The problem I am having is that at the first application of the brakes there seems to be too much servo. An extremely light pedal pressure quickly slows the car. If I apply the brakes 10 or 20 seconds later they work as they should with completely normal braking action. However after several minutes the same over servo condition reappears just for the first application. The fault is persistant and doesn't change regardless of speed, engine revs or ambient temperature.
I have flushed and bled the system many times with no change.
I have checked all the vacuum lines and it has a new reservior and check valve.
I live in Southern California (80 degrees today) but I plan to visit the UK in Feb to see Mum at which time I can purchase new parts if that is what is suggested.

finaly got around to fitting the new reaction valve to the servo. Brakes are working perfectly. Thanks again for all inputs

Hi all.

We have a blocked bathroom sink. I tried last night to loosen it as did Dad but to no avail. So mum went out and bought "Domestos - the world's most powerful drain cleaner" or so the label claims. (She usually uses that Mr Muscle stuff which works every time. But there was none in the shop)

However, this didn't shift it so she unloaded a bottle of Mr Muscle which she went out especially to buy.

The problem, as I'm sure you've guessed is that the blockage is still there and the sink is full of water and no doubt hydrosuplhuricformaldyhide or some equally dangeous chemical.

What do we do? Can't reach in obviously as if this stuff is as potent as it claims (which from past experience it is) then I'm likely to yank my fleshless hand out screaming. To dismantle the pipe would result in something equally unpleasant.

Any ideas?

If your TV has only one scart input then you should daisy chain.

Try this: TV out scart from Freeview box to TV in scart on VCR; out from other scart on VCR to TV.

Aerial lead as before from Freeview to VCR and to TV.

This should work.
