Question VW Golf Battery
noel2538

Hi
I have a Golf Mk4 1.6 which is very hesitant when excellerating. My VW dealer are trying to sort out this fault; they have put a new Throttle Body and Lampda Probe or sensor, not sure which, but the car still hesitates and it jerks along brilliantly when crawling in traffic. When I took it back to the Dearler last Saturday they had it for over 7 hours and then decided to try new battery on the car as they felt that under load the battery was losing power.

Has anybody heard of this sort of problem? I did say that if battery not holding charge would that not be the alternator? VW said no.

I did speak to a garage who deal with electrical problem with cars and they did mention the engine management system may be the problem.

I am totally lost at what to do, my warranty runs out end March and this fault isnt going away. Can car computers be re-booted like personal computers?
Any advise would be very much appreciated.
Thanks Noel Read more

Are you sure? I was chatting to someone the other
day who wrote the software for car ECUs. I'm studying
DSMs at uni at the moment and was after help!
Amongst other things he told me that they continuously adapt to
driving style and input from engine sensors. In fact, when
you switch off the ignition the ECU remains active for about
30 minutes, refining and checking its thermal model of the engine
as it cools down.
A lot of what happens in the ECU is dynamic... in
fact, about half the code in there is redundancy in case
a sensor fails.

There's only one heat sensor though, and that checks the temperature of the coolant (Or the head in some cases, the Ford diesel Endura engines for example)

Unless there's something I don't know about brand new cars it sounds like he was talking it up a bit.

I wouldn't mind being proven wrong though, it does sound interesting.

Hello,

I have though about changing the Mondeo and gone through the options from another Mondeo, perhaps a year old Ghia X 2.2 TDCi or 3.0 V6, maybe a new Focus estate 2.0 TDCi from a broker, I have looked at a nearly new Vectra 3.0 CDTi - great VFM, concidered a facelift 330d Touring of approx 2001/2002 vintage and also an Impreza WRX 5 door of a similar age for a bit of fun. However nothing has got me going enough to do anything about it.

Now the wife wants to change the Clio for a 5 door Freelander, not a new one she says - phew - one the we would not worry about filling to the brim for a tip run. Ok, I do not know too much about Freelanders, I know I dont want a 1.8 K-Series one or a 2.5V6 for that matter, I also know the early (Rover 'L' Series?) diesels were very rough so it would have to be a BMW engined TD4, so when were these launched, I guess 2000?, has the engine spec changed since then, if so when? What is the best trim level? What is there to look out for?

I am in two minds, I really am not sure if I am after support for a Freelander purchase or back up when I tell the wife why we are keeping the Clio.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

If you like fast 4x4s and SWMBO wants an estate style - get a Forester. Mind you it does like a drink.

Do you need to be trade in order to bulk buy oil?

Has anyone done this before? What are the savings versus shop bought stuff?

I'm after 5w/40 turbo diesel engine oil suitable for Pug HDi engine. Read more

Hello All,

My Mercedes A-Class 170CDi avantegard with 90,000 on the clock, failed its MOT on Friday due to the emissions test. It was put in for an MOT & then a B service.

The emissions test can be solved by replacing the injectors at a cost of £1700 (all day job!), it needs new pulleys and belts (£670) and something on the steering rack (£723).

So all in all about £3000 worth of work - for a car that I don't think is worth that.

So I can't get the MOT until at least £1700 is spent on it and the tax runs out tomorrow. Would I be able to sell/PX it on without MOT/TAX?

Any ideas on what I should do? Thanks.

Tez.

Re: emissions problem.
If fuel additive doesnt work, you could try biodiesel if you can get 100% stuff in your area? Or get some mail order. If so use a blend of 20% biodiesel, 80% normal diesel.
I had mine MoT'd while it coincidentally had 15% bio in the tank and the tester thought his machine was broken, the emissions were so low. Took him 3 attempts to even get a reading on the machine, and he remarked that it was incredibly low.

May not work but might be worth a try. Then get rid.

Good luck with it.

I have a popping noise coming from left front suspension when wheel goes over small pot-holes(i avoid the big'uns) or badly patched, rippled surfaces. I'm guessing it maybe suspension arm or bushes. Car is Honda Civic type-R with only 25K miles still under warranty. I'm going to get it looked at but am not paying for replacement parts unless it's considered to be wear&tear. Any views from fellow owners / mechanics pleeze. Read more

Aprilia. Dealer says it's a NSF strut that needs replacing. They've had a look at it and said it'll be done under warranty.

Has anyone had experience of the ESP system on a Passat/Golf actually working in the DSC stability control mode?
I?ve had my traction control working constantly at low speed in snow ,when it limited the maximum revs, and another mode limiting wheel spin, but not revs, when pulling away in wet conditions . I saw the light flashing once on a wet roundabout but that may have been a wheel spin issue.
I am thinking of the ?helping to control imminent skids by applying individual brakes? mode. The reason I ask, is that my Passat's rear brake discs are needing replacement and I?m wondering if the rear brakes have been working away overtime to limit the under steer?

Had ny civic 3 door 1.6 sport in for the 2 year service ,only on 20,000 miles not the 25,000.
The cost a whopping £271 to check it,sparkplugs ,oil change etc

Further - I would actually consider a main dealer when the car is getting old and has a niggly fault. They are usually common problems and the dealer might know them all too well and sort them faster and cheaper.

Better still, wander round the back and speak to the mechanics direct for free advice - usually the older the better in my experience with a Renault dealer.

Afternoon all!

My Current car is a 54 regd Golf 1.4 FSI, but due to an an increase in my annual mileage (for various reasons non work related) im thinking about swapping it for something diesel powered. My initial idea was just to swap it for a diesel golf, and as such i test drove an 04 Black 3dr 1.9 TDI at the weekend whilst mine was in having a door seal replaced under warranty. I paid (well my parents paid) £11,495 for my Golf when it was about 3months old, 6 months ago. By Trading it in, I expected to make a loss, however the dealer (VW) would only offer me £9000 against the TDI. Im not happy about losing £2500 in 6 months. So my options are;

1) Sell my Golf privately (£10-£10.5k?) and get the TDi

2) Trade it in and see the money come back in fuel savings

3) Sell my Golf privately and get a Fabia VRs/Old shape Leon 130Tdi or similar (i used to have a Leon and liked it alot)

4) Keep my Golf because my annual mileage of circa 20k prob wouldnt cost me a alot mor in petrol than it would in Diesel.

5)Any other options

Thansk in advance! Read more

What about a 2.0 TDi (140bhp) Octavia? Should get a decent spec nearly new (under 10k miles) one for under £11k. Does over 50mpg with normal usage and has plenty of power? Have heard that the 140bhp is actually more fuel efficient than the 130bhp as it is a more modern engine.

Has this Ka got air-con? Is this condensate from the air-con [pure water] or leaking anti-freeze?
