Hi all,
I am working on a Rover 25 K-Series engine, when the car was brought into the garage it was pressurising from the oil filler cap (or rocker cover).
A compression test was carried out on the engine just to see what figures we were getting NO 1 cylinder:40psi, No2:55, No3: 35, No4:120 - Something was evidently very wrong with the engine.
With the k-series engine being notorious for a dodgy head gasket, we took off the head and found that it did require skimming and a new head gasket. Before fitting we checked the bores and pistons which were fine.
The proper head gasket was fitted, new stretch bolts were added and the engine was timed up.
Following build up the car refuses to start (even with a pull).
Another compression test was carried out - all figures were less than 50 psi (should be around 120 - 150psi).
A tablespoon full of oil was put into each cylinder, and a compression test was carried out - all results were above 120 psi. (you may be thinking what we were thinking - piston rings).
Before taking the engine out we looked at the problem in greater detail - and unfortunately found that the plastic oil level indicator fitted to the bottom of the dip stick has been melted off - Indicative of an engine which has been running in boiling oil (i.e a cooked engine).
Sorry for the long introduction - my question is:
Is it worth installing new piston rings into the engine to see if the compression returns, - the engine was running when we picked it up (albeit with very low compression), or once an engine has overheated is it useless?
I.e, I don't want to throw good money after bad, but on the other the other hand I am quite prepared to carry out the work if the engine may run again with no other problems
I would also be interested to hear from anyone who has fitted new rings to an overheated engine and found that it cured the problem.
Any information would be greatly appreciated
Many Thanks,
Stephen Laughlin

If you had to describe your driving style in one word what would it be?
I would go for "calm" and, if allowed two words, "mostly calm".
Of course, SWMBO may not agree .......

"ordinary" was a good choice - I'll copy it.
I have decided after sitting in many a car, the corsa is the one for me. Shall be buying it sometime soon.
Im going to get the 3dr version SXI in sapphire black. But I cant decide on the engine to get.
What are your experiances and thoughts on both the engines.
(P.S. please stay on topic. im getting enough stick in real life for buying a new car. Thanks) Read more
Have to agree with HJ and Max hired a 1.2 twinport for the weekend. i have never liked the Corsa styling, but these SXi cars are great fun to drive. This had the larger alloys and took on the M25 with gusto, used half a tank to do 200 odd miles at 80 to 90. I cant believe the diesel would be as much fun. Why spend more Ive seen them on the net for £7k brand new, got to be a bargain even with new model out soon. Look best in black.
This morning, I was stuck in a 1.5 mile queue of *very* slow-moving traffic on the A33 heading towards M4 J11.
With the fuel gauge in the red and the computer saying I had a range of 12 miles left in the tank, it got me wondering.
How much fuel does a typical petrol engine consume (GPH) when just ticking over?

>I suggest you buy a decent sound system for your car and don't worry about it!
It has a decent sound system but I'm afraid that doesn't help when you're sat in stationary traffic, in the outside lane of a dual-carriageway, 2 miles from the nearest petrol station, wondering if you are going to add to the congestion by running out of fuel.

Does anybody know of a web-site that lists vehicle manufacturers models and variants along with technical data, principally each vehicles kerb-weight (UK or EU directive will do). Seems the only way of checking out a vehicles kerb-weight is by visiting each respective manufacturers web-site, a time-consuming business. I figured (obviously incorrectly) that there may be an 'official' or 'semi-official' site somewhere ie MIRAS, DoT etc but have been unable to find what I'm looking for. Has anyone else tried and succeeded? Many thanks, TB2 Read more
Have you seen this site, scroll down to the "choose manufacturer" bit:
www.carfolio.com/specifications/
I assume they get the info from manufacturers, not an official source such as DoT, but should be quicker than looking on seperate websites?

1998 Omega 2.5 Elite. ABS and TC lights keep coming on (getting worse) I also lose cruise, the speedo and a bit of the power steering. The car has been to the garage and they have identified that the ABS control unit keeps "dying" they don't know why. Complete unit, with the hydralic bit is £900 plus - help!! They have tried to get a second hand one with no luck. ABS control unit is available as a seperate part but the garage reckon it is dodgy to fit - I cannot even find a picture of the units and it is in such a pig of a place you cannot see it without taking half the engine out. Next problem - there are a number of models around so getting the right second hand one will be difficult. And of course the ABS unit operates under high pressure so it has to be a garage job? Any help, advice, suggestions, gratefully received.
I wondered about getting hold of the technical CDs for the Omega at least it might show me what I am dealing with.

I had exactly this problem with my 2000 2.5 Elite Estate. Local garages couldn't get a diagnostic connection so had to take to it Vauxhall (Northern Motors, Watford) who charged £36 for the diagnosis and £564 to supply and fit new ABS ECU in December 2009. Took it in at 10 am, ready by 2 pm. The unit itself cost around £350 they said.
Seeing someone broken down and waiting on double yellow lines for the breakdown man made me wonder what the legal position might be in similar circumstances.
Suppose you are driving along next to an active bus-lane, when your car cuts out or suffers a flat tyre.
Do you:
a) stop in the middle of the road and call the breakdown service
b) ditto, but attempt a repair or change the wheel
c) pull over into the bus lane and block it while awaiting assistance or changing the wheel
d) drive (if possible) on a flat tyre until you find somewhere you can park legally?
All those options are themselves illegal, but which would be the least illegal, or cause the least obstruction? Read more
Is this why you are called No Wheels?!
i was looking for someone to explain the effects of torque and bhp whilst driving a car and if this means turbo diesels are better than petrols in more ways than just economy

That's not a bad idea actually!
Took advantage of the nice day (in the North West anyway) to wash my daughters car for tthe first time for a while.
I was dismayed to find the the bonnet has an indentation the size of a jacket button, but with the paint undamaged. An inch or so away from the dent is styling 'crease' and the paint for 3 inches or so has cracked open.
This is going to have to be repaired, and on her 18mth old metallic black car, it aint going to be cheap.
There's no doubt in my mind that the damage was caused by a rocket, several of which landed amongst our cars after a neighbours Nov 5th party. I still have the offending items and they fit the dent perfectly, and explain why the paint in the dent is undamaged (although a surprising dent from a cardboard tube).
Of course I'm kicking myself that I didn't spot this earlier, and I'm loath to pursue a hopeless cause, but does anybody think I've got a realistic chance of getting him to pay? Would his house insurance (liability to third parties) cover such an event? Read more
Keep the evidence - just blame it on the new influx. They probably had fireworks at New Years, and these things can travel some way, right? :o)

I have a '96 Audi A3. The other day i put the passanger electric window down, it never came back up. It will start moving up for a few inches, stop and go down again. I have a complete electric window from the scrap yard, with glass motor/regulator etc for £20. Before fitting i tested it by plugging it into the loom, but it act's in the same way as the original window hence i havn't fitted it. Not too sure on what to do, any ideas? Thanks! Read more
It might be worth a go at the global closure procedure (if your car has it). The manual will show you how to do it, but if thats long gone, it's basically.
Lock car.
Unlock car with remote, but keep the button pressed until the windows fully open.
Lock the car with the remote, but keep the button pressed until all the windows close.
This over-rides the drop down feature and should re-set the auto up and down functions.
Thanks for the responses guys, pretty conclusive then - new engine!
