Bit confuesd about topping up as the car came with a litre of shell helix ultra 5/30w but it doesnt match the spec (vw 506.01)listed in owners manual (realised other day) but had already used it up at last top up.
Bought some castrol SLX which matched spec in manual - not sure if it will need an oil change service now ?? Does anyone know as its supposed to be long life service regime ??
If your supposed to top up with vw506.01 why the hell do vw supply the shell stuff with the car ??? Read more
My son is thinking of using a company called interestfree4cars to buy a new car. They sell new cars at list price on interest-free credit with no deposit and repayments over 1 to 5 years according to your preference. I've read their website, but does anyone have any experience, good or bad, of actually using them, please? Many thanks GrahamM Read more

My 2000 "X" pre facelift Passat TDI PD 115 has used about one pint of water recently over approx. 1000 miles. The car has done 83,000 miles and has never used any water (or oil) before since new.
The coolant (and header tank) is perfectly clean with no signs of oil whatsoever. There is a VERY slight sign of condensation emulsion on the oil filler cap, but I mean very slight and the car has only done a couple of short journeys before I noticed this (less than 10 miles). There is no sign of any external leak.
I have to travel on a 400 mile round trip early tomorrow (100% motorway) and I am wondering if I should risk it? I have arranged a coolant system pressure/leakage check at my local garage on Friday.
Any suggestions as to what may be the problem and if you would risk the journey?
Thanks for any advice.

Just had my A6 (same engine) fixed. It was a blown head gasket, and, as I'd run it with the problems for slightly longer than you had, I'd also distorted the head. Total of £800 to fix, but that included belts and new waterpump. I know it seems silly investing that much in a 9 year old car with 190,000 on the clock, but the car drives beautifully, and the mechanic says the rest of it is sound.
Hi guys!,
Happy new year...
Just want to check something out with you chaps, took my car (mondeo) for an oil change at ATS yesterday as kwik-fit were to busy (cant afford a full service just yet! xmas has hammered me!!) :) to be fair I was really impressed with the service ATS offered i'll be going back for sure.
I thought I read somewhere, correct me if im wrong that Fords or Mondeos?? used 5W/40 oil?
Just checked my reciept and they have put in Shell Helix (blue) plus 10W/40 in my car. Is this the right stuff and is it any good? Also the price was £24.99, sound about right or have i been done?
Thanks in advance guys!

Leef - when I had the oil and filter changed in my Focus TDCi by a local Ford Rapid Fit last July, they charged £24.99 all in and as has been said, genuine Ford filter and 5/30 oil. Sounds like what you were charged is similar to most of the fast-fit places.
Is it possible to fit different tyre size on the front than are on the back? For example 185/65R14 on the back and 185/60R14 on the front but both with the same speed rating? Is it safe and legal? Thanks Read more
You don't say whether the car you are proposing fitting these to has ABS.
The tyres can quite legally be a different size front to rear, however the sizes you propose have different rolling diameters thus if the car has ABS the ABS light may well be on permanently and ABS will not work.
If these tyre sizes are different to the standard fit for the car, then you should inform your insurance company you have modified the car. If you don't and you are involved in an accident (and the car is inspected), you will find you were not insured.
I have spilt some oil on my engine. It is not covered but more than a drop. Abit worried should I take the car to the local garage and attempt to clean some off with power hose???

Actually I know of a valeter who was so annoyed at the dealership offering full valets for 99p (was meant to bring in potential customers, but just brought in 10+ year old Escorts for a scrub) that he decided that a good ECU soaking would soon put a stop to the offer.
I wouldn't have had any sympathy except the bloke was paid flat rate instead of per car, so instead of having his normal work to do (which was a lot to begin with) he then had his normal work plus a load of old knackers to clean.
I don't honestly know whether he managed to do it to a customer's car or not, I think the management pulled the offer pretty quickly without his intervention, but believe me he was going to do it.
For that reason I've been suspicous of sticking a power hose under my bonnet ever since...

Just to add to this subject, you can use the Yamaha 5.1 to drive your front speakers only. I believe that the Yamaha that you have got has two pairs of speaker connections for the front, one pair for the centre, one pair for the rear right and one pair for the rear left.
If this is the case, then just set your surround mode to off and use just as a normal amp.
Just because it is 5.1 pro-logic, it doesn't mean that you can't use just the normal front speakers to play your music on. In fact, that is what it is designed for.

I've just been out on my customary lunch run to the pie shop and noticed a strange thing in the car.
I backed out of the drive, started moving off and heard a really loud "BONG" noise. By bong I mean an electronic chime type noise. Only did it once and the car drove ok for the 5 minutes I was in it.
I know the manual inside out and it doesn't mention a bonging noise for anything bar leaving the lights on or reprogramming a key.
Anyone any ideas?

My mondeo bongs when you re start the car while the fuel guage is low. If you are driving and the fuel gauge drops into the red there is no noise.
Reading a letter in the press re "Getting a USA visa if you have got a motoring conviction" prompted a reply and reference to the USA visa website.

If you get down to this level...

....the application will take a minimum of fourteen to sixteen weeks to process; some applications may take longer.
So I hope all on the forum planning a trip to the US of A have got it sorted else the required interviews for a visa are held in London of Belfast so a bit of forward planning will be required plus probably a lot of time and expense.

As I interpret it, Castrol SLXII (506.01) has been superceeded by 507.00, to cater the more stringent demands of longlife servicing PDi's with particulate filters. As my GolfV 105 (Euro4) does not have a particulate filter, I get my top up SLXII from my VW garage at £11.56/litre. Your experience, P_L just shows the varying levels of, er, understanding across dealers (applies to all manufacturers, not just VAG...)
