Audi A3 electric window help? - Randy824nas
I have a '96 Audi A3. The other day i put the passanger electric window down, it never came back up. It will start moving up for a few inches, stop and go down again. I have a complete electric window from the scrap yard, with glass motor/regulator etc for £20. Before fitting i tested it by plugging it into the loom, but it act's in the same way as the original window hence i havn't fitted it. Not too sure on what to do, any ideas? Thanks!

This is a fairly common fault on A3 models. The cable drive mechanism has become detached from plastic guides (broken) that transport the glass up and down. You can hear the motor working but the glass does not move correctly.A new drive assy can be bought from Audi about £70, but it is a marathon job to fit cos the regulator is riveted to the door frame .This requires a complete strip down of the door. The whole assy must be removed from the shell of the door (including glass)for dismantling.Btw,if you do decide to tackle the job, make sure you get new rivets.

I know nothing about them, but can i suggest a forum search on Golf leccy windows. It's a common fault on those and being as the cars are closely related, you may pick some tips from Golf owners.

sorry, the golf may be related mechanicaaly but the window regulator system is completely different.

is not the glass thinking that there is an obstruction in the way and a micro switch is making the glass drop back down?

Fair enough, sorry to (potentially) mislead

I reckon Oldman is basically correct on this. If cable had become detached from the glass then surely the system wouldn't reverse and the glass go back down. The motor would keep whirring away and the glass not move. I would look for some kind of obstruction first. Presumably there is no microswitch - is there an ECU that monitors motor current or something?

I guess if you take the door trim off and shine a lamp in there then it will all become a bit more obvious..

It might be worth a go at the global closure procedure (if your car has it). The manual will show you how to do it, but if thats long gone, it's basically.

Lock car.
Unlock car with remote, but keep the button pressed until the windows fully open.
Lock the car with the remote, but keep the button pressed until all the windows close.

This over-rides the drop down feature and should re-set the auto up and down functions.
