VW MkIV TDI cracked sump - misterbarbel
After an incident with a rectractable bollard I'm left with a crack of about an inch long in my oil sump. Replacing the sump is a straight forward task (once I've sourced one), but I was wondering in the existing sump could be repaired. I guess the sump is cast from some type of alloy, can these cast alloys be welded in any way?

Thanks for the help

Yes,ally alloy can be welded, any competent engineering firm could do it.No idea how much it would cost but it may be worth getting a quote.

Thanks for the help gents! The repair should work out cheaper than a new sump.

A new sump is £300 fitted, I found out the hard way on Skoda Octavia TDI (Mark VI Golf in drag)

I can appreciate that car ride low to flow through the air better and thus save fuel, but find the suspension quite soft and the plastic underbody tray often drags in bumpy roads.

VAG seem to appreciate this and sell a steel undersump protector for £300 !!!!, why don't they fit it as standard to their cars???

Mistermarbel or whatever your name is!
Before you throw money at it, i did something on my BMW that lasted 4 years until I got rid of the car. My sump had a crack about an inch long (or it wore through - not sure) when it hit the floor of a ramp-like hill.

Anyway, oil wept out, similar to when you get a cut finger, you wipe it and it reappears after a second.

Well, What I did..

1 x can of spray solvent
1 x Pack of JB Weld
1 x Exhaust assembly paste (not exhaust putty)

While the engine was hot, I sprayed the crack, then quickly rubbed exhaust paste into the crack before too much oil could come out (the paste was waiting on my finger)
As the sump is hot it dries quickly, rub it in hard, this will stop the weeping for now.
then clean the oil and loose paste off, and liberally apply JB weld over the damage and smooth.

Leave overnight and in the morning it should be fine.
It dries grey and isn't really noticeable.

Good luck

Thanks for the replies guys. I took the sump to a local aluminium welding specialist, the fix was £10! A lot cheaper than £77+vat VW wanted for a new sump.
