Hey guys...
If I bought from a BCA auction, how much BMW 5 Series is less than £10k (the less the better!) likely to get me?
I want a car in exceptional condition with FSH and leather, but mileage is not a concern. If anything I would prefer a 100k mile car becuase at least I know I'm not paying a premium for low mileage...
I guess what I really want to know is whether a facelift 530d SE or Sport is dooable or whether I should settle for a 525d/530i/525i... Read more

Easy ... 2000 Mazda 626 GXi. Reliable quiet well eqipped family
car. Not the most exciting but for £2000 you won't do
better!
Yes you can - the Mondeo is as reliable, as well equipped and has the added advantage that it's reasonably decent to drive.
I cannot find how to adjust (up as they are too low) the dipped lights on my BMW e34 518 (with electric height adjustment)- I have a Haynes manual but their indicated (white)adjustment bolts dont seem to exist on my car - can anyone suggest how I can get them sorted? Read more
John many thanks I will have a look for these and get back to you. I must admit that I'm normally ok with working things out (just put a new radiator/window motor/alternator in)but so far uplifting this light has beaten me.

I apologise if this is old news, but I have just filled up at my local Shell station and I noticed that they had no optimax. The Lady in the shop explained that the recent fire at the oil refinery has had a severe impact on supplies of optimax. Shell?s policy is to supply the limited stocks available only to their larger filling stations. Clearly my local one is not deemed as being larger enough, cannot see it myself; they are always rushed off their feet when I go in. Read more

Whilst driving round the M25 (in a truck)this afternoon I had to stop as I witnessed an accident. A French LHD artic pulled out from lane 1 in to lane 2 and on the way picked up a car on his front bumper, It remineded me of the thread a while ago about people sitting in blind spots of trucks. Now on this occasion no blame could be put on the car driver as he was overtaking the truck and the truck driver was just not aware of what was around him, the car was not a pretty sight but the driver was ok, just quite shaken (as one would be after having been pushed sideways by 44t of artic for 200yds). Now we are all aware that vehicles have blind spots, so why does someone not invent a warning system such as used on Planes so if you move within say 2 meters of another vehicle you are warned of their presence!!!
Also, with regard to the thread on Hazard lights, I was glad people paid attention to mine at the time as I could see the traffic behind not stopping as quickly as I was!! Read more
I would imagine the reason you don't see them is because of where they are now carried out. Last time I got stopped at one it was in the services on the M40 at J10. I was coming down the A43 towards the M40 and a Police car just put his follow me lights on and pulled me into the services where they had set themselves up out of the way. They also do the same on the A34 at Sutton Scotney, so unless you are actually looking for them you are unlikely to see them. I suppose again, doing it this way is safer for everyone involved, stopping vehicles at the road side is not the best way to avoid an accident!!
Fellow BR members......
OK, I have been duped by chain e mail, regarding car jacking. Welliesorter's links below explain the situation clearly.
I really must stop getting exited about this stuff ::takes tablets::

You probably have a good point there D
HELP, how do I change the rear brake pads on my Golf 1.8GTI? Read more
Jack up and support rear of car. Undo the two 12mm bolts securing the caliper to the carrier. Release handbrake and disconnect cables (important). Now it gets fiddly. You will need a wind-back tool which rotates the piston clockwise whilst it pushes the piston back in. You can fudge it with a pair of long nose pliers pushing on the piston whilst rotating it until it is all the way home. Make sure that the cut outs in the head of the piston are orientated so that the peg on the back of the new pad will engage into one of them when you refit the caliper. You'll see what I mean when you get there.Take out the old pads (hammer and chisel!) Wire brush all the rust and scale off the caliper carrier so the new pads are an easy fit in the carrier. Sometimes need to remove the paint from the edges of the pad, apply a little copper grease to contacting surfaces and refit the caliper with the new bolts supplied or put a little thread lock on the old bolts. DONT reconnect the cables yet. Pump the brake pedal around 10-20 times to make sure the pads are snug against the disc. NOW you can reconnect the cables. You'll probably find the handbrake is a bit 'long' but resist the temptation to adjust it until you are sure the new pads are fully bedded in by which time the handbrake will have probably sorted itself. The lever needs to return fully off after every application.
Hope I havent missed anything!

Simplicate and add lightness!!
Your opinion required to settle an argument.
A hill with three lanes. One lane down hill with solid double white lines indicating no overtaking etc. One lane up hill with a broken white line indicating that traffic can cross to the next lane though this next (centre) lane contains diagonal white lines.
Do these diagonal lines mean no-go or can this lane be used to overtake by traffic heading up the hill as indicated by the broken white line between the left hand up hill lane and this one?
Regards.

Ah, i think that it was the Redhill bit i was thinking of. They do seem to be downgrading the road progressively though.
Hi,
I have a Fiat Punto 55s [1997] which i have been driving for about 6 months, about 2 months ago i started getting a problem pulling off first thing in the morning. I have no problem starting the car only moving. When i pull off the car moves but it feels as there is no power, its holding back, then after a few seconds (or longer lately) it will pick back up, power comes back and im gone as foot at this point is flat on the floor.
It seems to make no difference if i rev harder or softer or if i depress the clutch or anything like that. Its been suggested that i try starting the car with the accelorator depressed or the clutch depressed, neither of these make any difference.
When i have been driving long enough for the engine to warm up its fine then when i do restart the car, although lately even when hot its been missing slightly.
Any ideas what the cause is?? By the way im not very technical with cars.
Thanks in advance. Read more
Hi again thanks for the suggestions, another thing ive just realised and has worked until today(when it rained) is that if i start the car then turn it straight off and restart it i dont tend to get the problem. Dont know if that helps....
thanks again.

Michael - When you looking at selling the Mondy?
This is one Backroomer that would be very interested in having it, if only I can get my business off the ground in time as I couldn't possibly justify borrowing to fund it...
