Hi all.
Insurance renewal time for me and I was wondering if anyone here can help me with some specific information, should they have it? I am 24yrs old, when I took out my current years insurance I was 23. I am with Budget but my current policy is underwritten by Inter Hannova. I currently have the 'drive other cars' extension on my policy. It was a bit of a surprise when I got this facility from Budget being under 25 and all, but it is very useful thing to have-share the driving with a mate on a trip out, borrow a family car to nip to the shops, take the old man's Cooper S out for a spin etc.
Renewal came through and this year driving other cars is no longer included-different under writer named on quote etc. I rang up and it seems this year Inter Hannova have declined to quote and their cheapest bunch of policies don't include it.
Now I realise it is a pretty standard feature on policies if driver is over 25 and I also realise that it isn't a huge deal nor the end of the world etc but if someone else is under 25 and has the 'driving other cars' extension could they say which insurer it was quoted through and which under writer if possible so I can take a targeted approach to getting some quotes?

Hello
Im looking to see if anyone can give me any idea of approximatly how much this little lot is going to cost before i go to a garage and die of shock.
The car makes a clunking/rumbling noise under turning right or left which i think is most likely replacement CV joints. I know these dont come cheap at about £50 per CV but does anyone know approx how much a garage would charge for this and how much labour is involved?
Also the car is coming up to 5 years old and has done 52000 miles. The recommended Cambelt change is between 60000-70000 miles but as it has been nearly 5 years it is in on the ramps anyway would it be more cost effective to get this done at the same time and is this a major job on this engine?
Thank You

IIRC the Megane Sport is an 8 valve 1.6. I think the cv joints come with the shaft attached on these. The whole job for both sides should be about 1/2 hour each. Change the oil at the same time. The cam belts are relatively easy on these, from memory the 'book time' is a couple of hours but the last one I did took around 3/4 hour. Fit a new tensioner.

When BMW bought the Rover Group they bought all the brands which went into it. When BMW sold to Phoenix they only sold Rover and MG brands.
Does this mean that BMW are responsible for end of life recycling costs of all the old brands - Mini, Vanden Plas, Wolseley, Riley, Morris, Austin?
If not, why not? Read more

my dad thinks that the rear shockabsorbers or the springs themselves are past their best because he has said that when he drives his car over certain bumps or releived manholes he feels a kind of bottoming out feeling despite the fact that it drives normal over rough terrain and on smooth roads. he has done the bounce test and they return after one bounce. personally i think that it is due to the tow bar,as i think it is a little low but is fitted correctly. has he got something to worry about or is he just imagining this? also it is happening with just him in the car with no load, so would the shock just be simply old/ any thought welcome Read more
Last(and only) time I replaced these, every bolt through every bush was siezed in place. I ended up replacing several of the smaller bushes as well. The large bush came out ok, though, and the new ones went in quite easily.
I would treat all the bolts to a good dose of penetrating oil a few days before tackling the job.
Is it possible to repair a bottom hose. I was wondering if there is some kind of tape or alternative product available? As the bottom hose touched the alternator I thought I could just pop into the Ford main dealer and get another one , ha no chance. The hose has been on order for the last five days from the factory with no idea when it may arrive. I only want something that will get me mobile till the hose arrives. What astounds me is that the car in question is a standard 1.3 Escort (97). according to the dealer hoses are frequently changed on Escorts for this problem but they don,t keep them in stock. I have tried to locate a hose within a 10mile radius ,even tried a breaker. tomorrow I shall try within a 25mile radius. I still can,t comprehend that such a common part can be so hard to find. I always keep a roll of 'self-amalgamating tape' - wonderful stuff. You wrap it around the hole and it 'amalgamates' to give a semi-permanent repair. I then wrap a layer of PVC tape on top to give additional strength. I've fixed a few leaky top and bottom hoses - never failed yet.
Be very careful these cold frosty mornings if you are in the habit of starting your car on the drive to warm up,and then go back in to finish your breakfast. My neighbours Golf went walkabout at 8am today and has probably being broken up (leather seats, alloys etc).I guess the insurance will decline to pay, keys left in car, running, unattended etc. Read more

kevls, if your next question is loosely based on the many previous questions you've already asked, then please keep them in existing threads that you've already started.
Without wishing to offend, machine gunning 1001 questions in such a short space of time can have a negative effect and people *could* tire of it.

Some may recall a thread a few months ago entitled "Any quiet 4 cyl diesels"
Many thanks for everyone's advice on that thread. However the one that stuck with me was one saying that no 4cyl cars sounded that good.
So.... after a protracted search, I've ended up with another 6 cyl petrol - the new Lexus IS250. It has more torque than my IS200, less road noise, handles better and the most fabulous autobox. I normally HATE autos, but this was so smooth I couldn't beleive it and it even has better economy than the manual!
Runner up was the Audi A4 2.0T. Great engine, less company car tax and a better deal from the leasing company. BUT... didn't pass the "I want it" test when I saw it next to the Lexus in a car park.
We were also impressed with the Volvo S40 2.4.
We didn't like the Saab 9-3 (hideous cabin) or the 2.2D X-Type (diesel clatter). We didn't drive the 3-Series because the dealer was extremely unhelpful and I wasn't very impressed with the cabin - very cheap and nasty unless you spent quite a lot extra, I thought.
When will HJ drive the Lexus, I wonder? Read more

HJ, when are you next on the box?
I'm looking to possibly buy one of these in the new year. What do I get? 1.3 litre engine seems to be low on insurance, where as 1.25 seems to be group 6? Is the 99-02 model sufficient (cheaper is better) or should i save a bit and go for the latest shape? Any other better alternatives (either side of 3k) Read more
I thought the Ka was a girly car in any part of the country, seeing as Ford's target market with the Ka was actually women? :-)
Not saying that it's a bad car, or that I wouldn't drive/own one, but to say that it's anything other than an inherently girly car is probably far fetched!
Now the Sportka is a different beast :-)
