Any one remember Green Shield Stamps?.
After this we had wine glasses and smurfs, what else was there and what is there now when you buy your petrol/derv.
Also something i have been wondering for a while is this, years ago derv was half the price of petrol or less and there were few derv cars about, now there are loads of derv cars about derv costs now more than petrol.
Has petrol become cheaper than derv or is derv more expensive to produce now ?. Read more

Yes it was,or certainly pre 70s as I was still at
school when they were about(left in 1970)and it did not come
stuffed, you had to do that yourself.

I can remember Green Shield stamps (not the attempted revival) and I'd have been barely out of my pram in 1970. They didn't disappear until the late 70s or very early 80s. As others have remarked, when the showrooms closed they could still be redeemed at Argos. I don't know what connection there was between the companies but Argos shops seemed very similar to Green Shield showrooms except that they accepted money instead of stamps.

I do recall pre-filled books (printed pages rather than actual stamps) which shops kept for large purchases, although I may be thinking of Co-op stamps, which were around for much longer.

I can't imagine stamps ever being revived on a big scale as they'd be too easy to forge now.

Hi. Can anyone recommend a dent repairer in the west/east sussex area? I have heard that mobile tends to be cheaper. I have a dent approx 6"x1.5" just above the offside rear wheel of my 205 (thanks to some DELETED). It would be difficult to do with PDR method so I have been told. Best estimate so far for fill and spray is £85, but I haven't used these people before. Any recommends appreciated.

Hi and thanks for the replies, and apologies for swearing, but thought some *** would be ok.

I had already been through the page with the links and checked if any were local to me. I eventually got a quote from 'Panel Perfection' based locally. The guy came round, checked he could get access through the rear light cluster, and reckons he can sort it for £65. I prefer the idea of that rather than fill and spray.

Thanks again.

thank you everyone for your comments on my lexus or bmw forum. i must admit bmw are well engineered and build quality is superb. but i have noticed they look like clones of each other now 3, 5, 7 series. no character anymore. i bet there's bmw owners who have loads of problems with there cars and been converted to lexus. they use to be quite exclusive but there common as other cars now. the new honda civic is going to scare the blue rinse brigade its aimed at the younger market.

MiL is looking at an X-reg Mercedes 320CDi Auto Elegance with less than average miles. Maybe only 20,000miles.

I know all the pitfalls about rarely driven cars, but just for record, does anyone have an idea as to its value both in terms of a private sale and on the dealers forecourt.

Thanks

What an astonishingly good value buy, provided the low mileage hasn't adversely affected the car.

I only hope I am as lucky when I start properly looking for a 530d!

Hi guys. Wondered if anyone could shine some light on my problem. I have a Honda Prelude 2.3i on a 96M, since purchasing the car about 10 months ago I have found the revs on the car when in top gear jump up about 300rpm when excellerating for a second then settling down. I you get upto speed the revs tend to rise and fall if you have you foot just touching the throttle. seems to me like the fluid is very thin but with not being an expert on autos thought someone might be able to help.

Thanks. Pete

Is this box used in the volvo v70 as well?

I think the V70 uses the Aisan-Warner box similar to some Vauxhalls. Not certain though - have a look at it - you should see Aisan-Warner or 'AW' written on it somewhere.

Do all these people who ask "What should I buy" think that they then have someone to blame when the vehicle is not suitable for them. Read more

There are a few people here that we all know give very good advice concerning their specialist subjects. We know who they are and they are usually correct. Others offer their views with the best of intentions but one often needs a discussion around these views to evaluate them fully, or they are dismissed as being incorrect or invalid.

However, the BR works for me because I treat the responses carefully, like US police detectives treat results from lie detector tests. Such results are not admissable in court (IIAC) but they may point the detectives in a particular direction to gather hard evidence.

So, perhaps when someone asks "what car should I buy?" the question should be "what cars should I go and look at and what questions should I ask about them, and what are your experiences?" the decision is ultimately theirs.

If anyone is due to venture on to the M62 corridor in West Yorkshire its currently closed completely westbound south of Bradford and one lane eastbound is also closed. I have just returned from a trip to Mansfield and it has taken me the best part of an hour to do about 2 miles.

This closure is affecting the M62, M621 (which will begin to affect Leeds city centre), M1 junction with M62 and all surrounding roads. Avoid if you can. Read more

Was also closed eastbound from j22-j24 on Momday night, all the traffic was routed through Halifax because of a lorry fire - felt sorry for the two miles of stationary traffic on there that didn't leave at j22.

You don't realise how easy that road makes things until it's shut....we could do with better alternatives.

Cool thanks Vansboy. Yes, the invioce from Adams (Now Perrys) Peugeot has the phrase 'VAT Qualifying' on it. I bought the car second hand - this is the invoice from when it was purchased by the last owner. Oh well.

I doubt they'd be too keen to hand out details if they still have them, and I pestered them enough today with regards to locking wheel nuts. (Guess what I didn't get with the car.)

Every car based magazine I've read has mentioned at some point "Don't worry too much about missing service history. Just contact the manufacturer who will have it on database." I'd really like to know if they've ever actually done this, as it's definately not that easy - e-mails and snail mails to Peugeot Customer Care went unanswered. Luckily it's only the first serice I wanted to know about, and I'm assured Peugeot lease cars are well looked after while with Peugeot.

Hi, I hope someone out there knows the answer to this! I have seen a Yaris 1.4D4D that I like at a car supermarket, a 54 reg with 9,500 miles on the clock but no stamps in the service record. The price seems ok, but not if I have to buy my own warranty...

When I phoned up, the sales lady said she thought it would still be covered by the maunfacturer warranty but I would have to check with Toyota.

I phoned the contact number on Toyota's website and the man I spoke to said that he didn't deal with warranty queries and that he would put me through to the warranty department. The lady I spoke to there said she didn't see why not but then as she was ending the call she said I should probably check with Toyota - that's who I thought I was talking to!!!

I just seem to be going round in circles - warranty or not - anyone know???

Merry Christmas either way! Read more

"SWMBO and daughter both have a Yaris(plural = Yari?)"

It would be Yares if it was a Latin word, but it's almost certainly a made-up word by PR people - so probably stick to Yarises, as in Harrises.
