Do all these people who ask "What should I buy" think that they then have someone to blame when the vehicle is not suitable for them.

No

It's just looking for advice --- after all that's one of the purposes of this forum. If I was looking for a people carrier, I would appreciate others findings in reality (as opposed to the advertising guff)

I think you'd have to be fairly naive to think you'd have some comeback on a bunch of laypeople offering their opinion. You may as well ask the bloke down the pub

Definately not. The suggestions I received were great, well considered and made us look at several cars we had not even considered. My choice was mine - and incidentally I am delighted with it!!

i frequent another forum for Chartered Surveyors which is for RICS members only. Bizarrely, any advice given is subject to the normal rules and regs, despite the fact it could be a place where people could freely discuss and pick up tips and so on. Most unsatisfactory. Could also explain why the site traffic figures are pitiful, when the membership is over 100,000.
I have directed "new media" as they call themselves to this site several times as an example of how it should be done.
|
I also use the Chartered Surveyors forum. It is a dreadful environment with no opportunity for the type of chat we have here that can provide innovative answers to puzzling questions.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

Absolutely, no tolerance for creativity or imaginative thinking at all on the RICS site. Everyone's too scared to stick their head above the parapet because get this, your user name is your real name and RICS do know where you live and have been known to contact members over issues raised on the forum, not always to discuss, but to chastise.
OK, the RICS aren't scary as such, but the real possibility of having your letters removed because you dare to disagree means most people either toe the line or ignore them, and don't use the forum.
So, if liability could be proved on HJ forum (back to topic, phew), then you'll end up with something like the RICS site. Dead and nobody willing to contribute.

There are a few people here that we all know give very good advice concerning their specialist subjects. We know who they are and they are usually correct. Others offer their views with the best of intentions but one often needs a discussion around these views to evaluate them fully, or they are dismissed as being incorrect or invalid.
However, the BR works for me because I treat the responses carefully, like US police detectives treat results from lie detector tests. Such results are not admissable in court (IIAC) but they may point the detectives in a particular direction to gather hard evidence.
So, perhaps when someone asks "what car should I buy?" the question should be "what cars should I go and look at and what questions should I ask about them, and what are your experiences?" the decision is ultimately theirs.
