There have been a couple of threads recenty from people who have noticed a lack of grip in their tyres over the last few weeks.
Has the general public's driving capability really reached such a low that they can't recognise and respond to changes in driving conditions without having to be guided by an internet forum?
Perhaps all the electronics in modern cars is to blame, so that people who've never driven a RWD car on cross ply tyres expect the car to be able to take care of them whatever happens. Read more
You need to talk to Dave.
Hi All
In a complete & utter climbdown/ u-turn from 1 or 2 months ago I have gone totally off the idea of blowing 20+K on a Boxster, and am now seriously considering buying a Ford Focus 1.6 Ti VCT! They can be had for very good prices from car supermarkets. But now I've noticed a 1.8 Zetec Mondeo can be had even cheaper! Do I need help?
PS I've sat in one; I liked it.... Read more
I like the look of the S40 too, though I'm sure it'd be a lot more than a Focus...
Well thus far it has, two mechanics and a parts guy and counting..
Let me go back to this morning, bearing in mind no noises or problems at all from car on it's last journey saturday.
I pull away this morning on flat ground and instantly I hear twang, then grind, grind, grind as the car goes faster. I stopped, thinking I was pulling or dragging something by the wheel, but No!
Off I go again the noise gets worse, and the car pulls to the left so I am forced to pull over, call the AA and 1 hour later the guy gets me to turn the wheel from side to side. Excited he proclaims the coil (suspension) has come off, he tried to pull this loose but no it is stuck (and has no idea how this has happened).. Call the tow truck and he says the same as he drives to the Dealer, making matters worse by saying 'ooh that will cost ya!!!
I get to the dealer to be told both coils have come off, the tyres are slashed by the suspension coils and the car slumped forward and the parts guy scratching his head saying 'That's a new one on me'..
So I await a verdict from the dealer, but let me just put your minds at rest I drive on the motorway predominantly and cannot remember the last time I went over a pothole or a hump, moreover I cannot remember the last time I went over one of them at speed to unhinge two coils....!
Can you help?
Best as always,
Craig J.

i was very fortunate to have a drive of my friends supercharged xjr jaguar. have never driven a automatic before i was amazed how smooth the gear change was and how refined and smooth it was. my friend told me they have gm or mercedes benz auto boxes to handle the power and torque. one of the best cars i have ever driven.

Yes, they have a Merc auto box to handle the torque. XJRs are phenomenal cars, great value secondhand. Just make sure the engine has been replaced as many models seem to need an engine change under warranty.
Passed Rude Mercs dealership in Hackney yesterday on way into town. My eye was attracted to the front of a Riley Elf on the forecourt up for over £3k. Well, I thought it was a Riley Elf!
It had the classic chrome Elf radiator and the chrome horizontal slatted "moustache" bits either side of the rad' which I assume are some sort of vent. However, the body of the vehicle was a modern one and I could not identify it for the life of me (I was driving past at 30mph and it was behind locked gates)
It was a hatchback, auto, jet black and there was a word on the right rear of the boot, a short word.
At a guess, I would say it was a Japanese car....but no idea really if I am right.
Any ideas?

I think the Mitsuoka Ryoga looks better than the modern Jaguar S-type!
I'll be off now then...
i have noticed on some mercedes benz the engine block is quite wide. is this for better cooling rigidity or thermal efficency and better combustion. also is it big to be stable and cut down on noise or nvh for short.

Hello all,
I have just aquired a VW Sharan for the other half. The car is a pre reg, but a member of staff at the garage had been using it as his company car so it had 1800 miles on when we got it.
I have noticed a few times that when I stop and get the kids out you can hear a noise from the lower rear of the car. It sounds like the fuel pump when you first turn on the ignition, but this is whn you have stipped. It lasts for about 2 - 3 mins and then just stops. No adverse effects so I am not worried, just wondered if anybody knew what it was.
thanks Read more
Thanks all for your help - saved me a trip back to the garage!
Stood in the centre of York on Lendal Bridge at around 2 o'clock this afternoon. This long black stretch limo swooped past me with 'Dorchester' badged on the back, heading towards the Minster.
The badge on the front looked a bit like a Maybach, but was going too fast to tell.
Anyone know what I saw, or anything about them?

Sorry henry! Peter Perfect answered the original question straight away. I currently run a Mercedes E-class E280 six door. The saloon was bought new in '99 and was then sent to Germany to be stretched to six doors. Took about four months. You would never know you were driving such a long car, handles superbly.
Being in North Wales, there are still a few part-time undertakers around in rural parts, buliders by day, undertakers as a sideline (aka 'Fred's with Sheds'). The vehicles they use are a scream. One has an Austin Princess hearse c1977 (hand painted), another a MKI Granada limo, exhaust hanging off, no window winders (fallen off). As they creak open the doors for the family, the driver usually take one final deep drag on his cigarette and then flicks it, with associated shower of sparks, arcing beautifully through the air, usually landing on the flowers. Perfect!
Oh the stories I could tell. Unfortunately, they're probably for another forum completely.
