Often, when I try to lock the doors from the remote or with the key in the driver's door, the doors lock and immediately unlock again.

Fortunately, I am still able to lock the car correctly using the key in the passenger's door.

Has anyone got any ideas what I can do to fix this? If this is likely to require the assistance of a dealer, how much is it going to cost to sort out?

Thanks,
Tim Read more

No doubt there was a loose connection,or maybe the switch was sticking. If it is still the same system as on my Sierra there is a pin switch in the door latch which tells the system if a door is open.If I try to lock mine with a door ajar it will lock and unlock.

I am a bit surprised to find none of the many knowledgeable contributers to this site has seen fit to comment on the proposed change of emphasis to speed camera fines. My understanding from various reports is that in future money gathered from camera fines will be used to finance other types of safety gadgets, like flashing lights, yet more road signs etc. Some of these proposals might make good sense and the idea of completely rehashing speed limits, with more 20 mph zones could be advantageous as long as the new limits are not all lower. Strangely the 70 motorway limit is not up for change: half measures from HMG again. Any thoughts? Read more

the engine is a 1600 with a pierberg overcomplicated 2E2 carb.

i no these r pink fluffy dice, but does anyone know anything about my problem?.. as soon as the car warms up after a minute or so, it fires on 4 cylinders as normal Read more

The problem centres on a parking ticket issue in Nottingham recently. My daughter has this car, which belongs to me, on long-term loan while she is studying at Nottingham Trent University...

I have received a Penalty Charge Notice of £60.00 under the ?owner?s liability? provisions of the RTA 1991, Schedule 6, paragraph 2(4) for £60 as a £30 parking ticket issued to this car on 12 November 2005 has not been paid. My daughter states that she did not see any notice attached to the car, and I have no reason to believe that she is not telling the truth.

Whilst my daughter freely admits to parking outside her place of work, where the ticket was issued, and I am quite prepared to pay £30.00 I am reluctant to pay double that amount as I did not know, and could not, with reasonable diligence, have been able to discover the existence of the original ticket.

I have no doubt that this excuse has been flogged to death, but, as I say, I do not think that my daughter would lie to me, and I am prepared, if necessary, to go to court in this matter. I am 65, do not dribble, and still have one good suit in my wardrobe

I need some advice here, do I offer £30.00 ?in full and final settlement?, or do I take a harder line and offer them nothing, and see just how much of the tax payers money they are prepared to throw at this.

The insurance company are fully aware that my daughter is the main driver. As I am considering offering myself for the Bench, misleading an insurance company is not a course of action which I would consider.

Whilst traveling on the M4 yesterday on the way to taunton I spoted a white land cruiser at the site of a breakdown (gordano area)with red and amber lights going and flurecnt yelow and black chequer patern.I could not see any wording on the sides as I was traveling at speed.

Could this be one of the new higway vehicles and if so do they have any form of police powers ie does one need to mover over for them and can they legaly exceed they speed limit.

According to the HA website:-

Traffic Officers work with the police but their role varies with the severity of the incident. The Highways Agency Traffic Officers are not able to fine you, but it is an offence not to comply with their directions. The police still enforce the law.

I'd assume it to mean they have power to direct traffic analagous to that of a traffic warden in town.

Hi

I've got a mark 3, 1.4 Golf and i bought a new battery for it this time last year. It's now having problems starting, it turnsover fine but just doesn't start up straight away (this problem occured only after I had a gear box change roughly a months ago).

Is it a Battery or an Alternator problem? I have a feeling it is the latter, but can anyone help me with this minor dilenma?

Thanks! Read more

In addition to checking the earth strap from battery-to-chassis-to-gearbox. Check the earth strap between head and ignition coil. Finally check no wires have been trapped between gearbox and engine. Failed coolant temp sensor can cause difficulty starting when outside temperature falls.

I have had this problem on an off with my Astra for the last 6 months. Been into our local garage 3 times - first 2 they couldn't hear it and sent me away to "let it get worse".

Went in again on Friday, this time success - I'm not going mad. Fitter took car out and came back say not only could he hear it, he could feel it through the floor (that was the good news). Put car on lift and spent next 30 minutes rocking, prising, pushing and pulling various joints and bushes underneath. Even resorted to driving the car back and forth a few inches on the lift whilst colleague listened underneath. Then they both went for another test drive. Outcome is they can hear it but as cannot reproduce the noise in the shop, cannot tell me what it is!

Its not a rumble like a dying CV joint, but a loud knock when on uneven ground or pulling away in "stop/start" traffic. I've tried the full lock reverse both ways, which is supposed to help identify whether a CV going, but no noise. Fitter suggested joints on anti-roll bar can snap, but mine are fine. Anyone got any other suggestions, as when I'm out in the car I'm convinced something major is going to drop off it at any moment!!!!

Thanks, L

Also be sure to replace the copper sealing rings if you do disconnect the inlet/outlet fuel pipes.

Otherwise, air may 'leak' into the fuel system and cause running/starting problems.

What will work, ie read fault codes, for a model year 2000 Astra petrol?

From model year 2001 (petrol) and 2004 (diesel) EC legislation has required all manufacturers to use interface EOBD and allow independent outlets to access the on-board data.

Many earlier Vauxhalls used OBD and OBD2 which allow fault codes to be read from flashes on the dash display (the infamous paper clip trick).

I've been told that my Astra uses EOBD but a version which prevents reading or resetting of fault codes unless the Vauxhall Tech2 computer is used, which of course is only available at franchise dealers for significant cost - about £50 each time!

Am I really stuck with a car that CANNOT have fault codes read, either by me diy or by an independent garage?

Thanks for replies.
Quite surprising given the rising percentage of diesels in Europe. Even
Lexus' new diesel IS 220D is only shown as automatic -
TBC.

I don't think it is that surprising.

The main advantages of an oil burner are economy and the high torque giving good acceleration at low revs.

A 'conventional' automatic gearbox on a diesel usually has much higher consumption than the equivalant manual version - as much as 25% higher according to HJ.

Given the high torque at low revs is of no use in an auto box(simply causes more torque convertor slip) the main advantages of a diesel are to a certain extent negated.
