Astra 1.7 TD '98 Estate - Knocking noise - Cornish Lass
I have had this problem on an off with my Astra for the last 6 months. Been into our local garage 3 times - first 2 they couldn't hear it and sent me away to "let it get worse".

Went in again on Friday, this time success - I'm not going mad. Fitter took car out and came back say not only could he hear it, he could feel it through the floor (that was the good news). Put car on lift and spent next 30 minutes rocking, prising, pushing and pulling various joints and bushes underneath. Even resorted to driving the car back and forth a few inches on the lift whilst colleague listened underneath. Then they both went for another test drive. Outcome is they can hear it but as cannot reproduce the noise in the shop, cannot tell me what it is!

Its not a rumble like a dying CV joint, but a loud knock when on uneven ground or pulling away in "stop/start" traffic. I've tried the full lock reverse both ways, which is supposed to help identify whether a CV going, but no noise. Fitter suggested joints on anti-roll bar can snap, but mine are fine. Anyone got any other suggestions, as when I'm out in the car I'm convinced something major is going to drop off it at any moment!!!!

Just a thought but have the engine/gearbox mountings been checked?,gearbox mounting may be knocking.

has it had a replacement exhaust lately? i know a few of tyhe vaux systems have a hanger on the front downpipe which isn't usually on replacement non oem systems allowing them to randomly knock against the engine?
