Can anybody help with this problem which has been running since the beginning of August this year...? Bear with me cos it is a bit of a long story but am getting desperate...

History: The gearbox failed on my 2.3l auto petrol galaxy (car would no longer move!) - after a 3 week wait got it fixed by the only local garage who would touch it with a bargepole (new switch and something or other to sump). Car then drove forwards and backwards(big improvement on before) but jumped between gears and ignition did not work till tried a few times.A new gearbox ECU borrowed from another car was tried on my car by the garage and this completely fixed the problems - car drove perfectly. So all we needed was to get a new gearbox ECU of our own and we'd be sorted. Ha.

Tried three separate cheapo gearbox ECUs from mail order firm in Essex - none were quite right; car driving in 'safe mode' (not changing above 3rd gear); also ignition taking many tries to fire.

Finally decided about a month ago to give in and pay the £700+ odd to get new ECU ordered and properly callibrated by Ford main dealer. My partner - who under step-by-step instruction from galaxy gearbox specialist garage had fitted the previous 3 not-quite-suitable gearbox ECUs and so really did know which part he needed - read the part number off the side of original gearbox ECU in car to mechanic to ensure no mistakes. To cut long painful story short, Ford main dealer say they have received and fitted an ENGINE ECU, and further they insist that this is what we ordered(?????), and that we owe them about £800 for this (oh yeah, and our car still isn't working cos it still needs a gearbox ECU, which was all we wanted...)

Have phoned everyone at Ford, written letters, cried....they still have my car a month later....WHAT IS GOING ON???? can anyone shed any light on this...? Is it possible they did receive gearbox ecu and fitted it to engine instead?????(dunno even what one looks like...)The ECU we wanted sits beside the battery and is removed by sliding the battery sideways...Are we talking about the same thing even...????please help, running out of options here and the 'customer service' has been terrible, just defensive and hostile - 'closing ranks' and just telling us it's our fault........................:0( :0( Read more

I have been taking an interest in this car, simply because it has a lot of interior space, it is cheap as a nearly new car, and it is available as an auto diesel.

Does anyone have any experience/opinions of it in auto diesel form? Read more

i have a signum 2.2dti automatic elite 04 reg..the car has
been a pleasure to own and drive. 44 plus mpg around
town, the car has never had a fault, has been cheap
to service, i can park the car without the worry of
it being marked ( as i have found on previous mercs,
bmw & audi) the specification on the car is superb, with
the rear seats folding flat it becomes an estate car. build
quality is as good as previous merc and audi, being built
at opel in germany. i would strongly advise you to buy
one as it represents great value for money (this is important
to a scotsman) ha ha.

I am amazed you get such good economy from it. The best we could expect from the C5 we have is around 37 mpg combined (with a lot of short journeys though).

Yes the yellow can stuff is excellent. Good for putting on the door seals as well, helps prevent them sticking in icey weather.

Happy Blue!

Yesterday had our annual office day trip. Usually fry with EasyJet from Liverpool to a European City for the day. It's a lot better than fighting over rubber turkey. Have already been to Paris and Amsterdam.

Yesterday went to Geneva and also got the train to Montreux. Superb rail service BTW.

But...and this is the motoring bit....I didn't see a single dirty car. All were spotless or virtualy. In Manchester at this time of the year, almost all cars are very grimy and if washed become grimy within a few hours. Why is this?

Weirdly enough, they also get very shirty (no pun intended) if you hang out your washing on the balcony of your flat. Gotta love ´em!

From time to time I see mention in threads of "motoring organisations" having legal advice and help for their members.

I am a member of the AA and have been since the early eighties. I was always under the impression such help existed. Yesterday I had need of it for the first time.

There is no mention of it on their website, nor can I find any employee of the AA who knows of such a thing. The best I could get was "I think we USED to do that but not any more".

Eventually I got put through to a number that was supposed to be what I needed - it turned out to be simply some solicitors who deal with personal injury accidents only.

I doubt therefore this cover is (any longer) available to AA members. I have no idea about the situation with other organisations.

1) I'd be very glad indeed if someone knows better.

2) If you are an AA member and are assuming you have access to legal advice, I rather suspect you do not. Read more

Aha. I have an answer via email from the AA. Just missed it, after twenty odd years of membership. Unbelievable.

Thank you for your e-mail.

Unfortunately the AA no longer offer legal advice on motoring issues. This service was withdrawn in mid 2004.

Big Bad Dave

The garage under my apartment is huge and has a really shiny concrete surface. By holding the car on the foot-brake, revving hard then releasing the brake, I can do fantastic wheelspins. Yesterday?s rubber marks were about ten metres long before I bottled out (heading for concrete wall). I know I can beat that though, I?ve got the day off today.

My wife sits there shaking her head, but I?m sure backroomers will be impressed. Read more

Sierraman, you're dead right.
Can never get away with anything on here :-)

I was actually at the said driver's 50th birthday party last night, well, early this morning, actually, and we were talking old times, and he corrected me as well; it was actually a Maestro that he 'perfomed' in.

At the time we were replacing the fleet and were running some of both, all in the same colour, both Maestro and Ital had one thing in common, they were pretty awful compared to todays vans.

It was still a memorable trick, though obviously not quite as memorable as I thought.......
