I'm sorry to bring this up again, but the search facility does not seem to be working at the moment. I am planning to change the plugs on SWMBO's 1.4 Puma and have found that they are the taper seat type. Is there any advice that I should follow before taking the old plugs out? Is it best done with the engine hot? Should the new plugs be smeared with copper grease to prevent them siezing? Read more

Dave, thank you for the advice. I hadn't realised that there were two search fields. Got the answer I needed now. Thanks again.

I have a 2001 Ford Fiesta Flight Diesel and have had the red brake warning lamp stuck permanenetly ON since last week just after I had to do an emergency stop.

Looking in the manual, it tells me that it means that the fluid level is low but I have checked and the reservoir is full.

Could it be possible that this lamp is wired to any other switch such as a brake pressure balance switch which could have been actuated during the hard braking where I applied a very high force to the pedal.

I believe that some vehicles are fitted with sensors which would detect any imbalance between the two circuits but are they latching? (ie do they stay closed until manually reset).

Does the Fiesta have such a switch and if so, where is it and how can I reset it ??

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I have a 1991 Sterling 827SLi made by Rover for the US market. I have been able to get parts shipped to me from England until recently, when the supplier close to where my friends live went out of business. Can some one help me locate a supplier for both Rover and after market parts (eg. Unipart) for my car? Right now I need a speedometer transducer (speed sensor). A source that can use my credit card and ship to me direct via UPS would be ideal. I could have my friends in Devon pay and then I can reimburse them, but I would rather not bother them with it.

Regards,

I believe Rimmer Bros have a lot of 800 spares or google for Rover 800 sites. One which I've just found is www.pallant.f2s.com/rover/800.htm

I don't know if it's still true today, but in the early days of alternators they would often make a light growling noise when under load. Something to do with magnetic fields etc.
I can't say that I've heard one growling recently, but maybe electronics have changed enough to eliminate the noise, or maybe it's because I work on diesels now, or perhaps my hearing is going.

hi wondering if anyone can help me on the 2nd April 2005 i was driving home through my small estate at about 20mph when i got to the little T junction at the top of my close cars parked on both sides i pulled out and behind the car parked on the other side at 5mph and long and behold a cop car was overtaking the van parked the other side. In the most aggresive manner he told me to stay were i was get out of the car as i had in his eyes to quote "just performed the most dangerous piece of driving he had seen in 15 years of being a copper!!" I had my two small children who were now crying in the car in distress. He gave me a right dressing down and wrote me out a producer which i went and did the very next day as i was so shoock up at his manner. All was fine and i thought that was it until this morning when i received a court summons for careless driving outlining for this offence i have to appear in person. I dont know what to do i dont want to plead guilty but i dont want the hassle and stress of it being dragged out. I am a 28yrs female driving for 6yrs with no problems never been in trouble with anything,i never hit nobody or anything and was not speeding its a quiet no through road. Have i a case all suggestion greatly appreciated thanks

Has been known for Forces to include NOIP on a RT/1. If you still have the copy make sure it does'nt contain information that you are being reported for the consideration of the question of prosecution for due care or driving without reasonable consideration. If it does then that is a written NOIP in 14 days. If not your brief will be interested.

hello again, to my suprise i have found something else possibly amiss on my car! aaarrrghhhh!!!! i bet you think i haven't looked at it before i bought it dont you? well i only looked to see if i could find any rust near load bearing areas and made sure it was a good runner. anyway my clutch pedal on my l reg cavalier travels excessively high up towards you if you put your foot behind it and it can stay there. should there be a stop bolt of some kind or a return spring? please tell me its annoying! Dynamic Dave

AS NC says - nothing to worry about.

As for it being annoying, remember what the Doctor told the person who said "if I lift my arm it hurts" The doctors reply was "well don't lift it then" !!

At rest the clutch pedal should be marginally higher than the brake pedal. If it's a lot higher, then adjust the cable at the gearbox end.

Car I have seen in a local garage (not a big dealership) is up for 3495. I've no PX what can I expect off the screen price ?, I know it depends on what profits in the car, but for anyone in the 'know' what would be the average 'ball park' reduction.

Cheers........ Read more

It's a bit of a how long is a piece of string...

Dealers seem to love saying that cars are at the advertised price for no p/x, p/x at screen price (typically £300 more), etc., which is just a way of offering you £300 less for your p/x than they say they are.

How much off? It depends on what the car is (120k white Fiat Brava 1.2? 50k silver Polo 1.4 TDi?) how long he's had it (three months? only came in yesterday?), how much he's paid for it (£2k? £3,200?) and how busy a month he's been having.

Additionally, if he's making money on finance, warranty and maybe even your imaginary p/x, he might be more flexible on the price on the invoice than if he only has one profit source in the deal.

I would say that you shouldn't focus on the amount of discount but rather how good a car it is and whether it is worth the money, whether you end up getting nothing or (improbably) £1,500 off, although that's not a reason to avoid haggling.

Is it possible to swap the drivers seat in my 306 td pug for the vertually unused front passenger seat, any technical probs? Read more

ChrisMo

Check the bolts holding the seat to its runners aren't loose, one fell out on our 306. And yes, the 306 can have side airbags and seatbelt tensioners, ours has them, there are a lot of wires running to the seats and a warning in the haynes manual not to remove seat if fitted with these.

Someone told me tonight that they had read that Honda are producing the Fit (Jazz) in China and would be exporting to the UK at circa £6K.

I don't believe it for a minute but anyone know anything about this?

AFAIK Honda produce the Jazz in Japan only and I doubt that they would undermine the existing market where they can sell the Jazz all day at circa £10K.

The only reason to import a Fit to the UK is in the 1.5 Vtech form which I believe are produced for the Jap and Malaysin markets. Read more

On the back of the engine on my 97 Vectra diesel, there seems to be a black valve of some sort, that is inline on the water system,to the heater. It also has a small black push on pipe, much like a vacuum pipe on an old carburettor engine.

This seems to have a small leak, but I think under pressure, and the faster the engine runs,it is obviously losing more water,as the level in my header tank can go down, even if I've filled it up.There's no water in the oil,so the head gasket would appear to be ok,and I think it possibly unlikely the head could be cracked,so this may be the culprit.

Now.Is it a part I can get from Autovaux,is it likely I need to get ripped off by the local VX dealer? Read more

Quinny

It may well stop the water leak then,so before I ring Dick Turpin tomorrow,I'll give Autovaux a ring and see if they do it.
