Honda have released further details of their new Civic, which is due for UK launch in early 2006.

It seems the car is relatively unchanged from the pre-launch model shown last Autumn at the Frankfurt Motor Show. If it drives as well as it looks, it is going to be quite a car.!!!

It looks good but it's one we'll have to see in the metal. Picking up on the point about the rear screen, I was behind a new Alfa coupe tonight and while it has a largish are of glass at the rear, the actual window is quite a narrow slit in the glass, so we all have an excuse to go and sit in one. The Honda that is. Or the Alfa, but not before somone tells me the electrics work.

Can anyone advise how to fit new parts to Disc brake calipers on a Rover 95? Read more

Steptoe

The 95 is a P4, however the front brakes were lifted from the P5 which was in production at the same time.

As this is brake work unless you are really competent you should buy new units ( i.e. if you have to ask how to do it, don?t! )

However through poverty I did this job about 25 years ago, so details a little sketchy. Try to get manual or parts diagram. Check bleed valve will undo; otherwise you will need new units anyway!

Remove calipers but don?t split them, pump pedal to push pistons out before disconnecting hose ( or use airline afterwards ).

Clean everything thoroughly especially grooves. If pistons rusty ( very likely ) you *should* replace them *not* clean them up with fine emery paper.

Fit new seals in calipers, lubricate with brake fluid & insert pistons. Fit dust seals to pistons & caliphers with the circular metal clips ( not easy, this is where you need diagram ) & push pistons back.

Refit calipers & bleed etc

Finally sell 95 & buy a proper P4 (up to 1959) with drum brakes, still stop on a sixpence

I'd change the plugs.

I'd check that the coolant is touching the bottom of the temperature sensor: it's held with a clip, and the "O" ring may need to be retrieved and fitted to the sensor for it to seal properly... it's a bit fiddly to get it right.

Off to the sun soon on the 'vomit comet' as some have called the speedferries super cat - but hell I travel well and how sick can a wife get in 45 minutes?

I've not been to Boulogne before so any tips welcome. I have been driving in France for 20 odd years so I don't need the sort of 'Don't forget the red triangle' or 'keep on the right' type of advice but any tips on how to avoid getting lost in Boulogne appreciated especially if combined with where to get that all important tank topping fill of fuel before returning to the UK. Unfortunately I will be returning on a Sunday night - never the best time to get cheapest fuel. Is there anywher near the port that does a good deal on fuel?

Do these new 'chip-and pin' cards work in European pumps? Read more

I can now answer my own question.

As other members have indicated UK cards are a real chocolate fireguard in unmanned fuel stations. L'Eclerc is easy to find but unmanned out of hours - like a Sunday night. Fortuntaely there is an Esso about 400m past McDonalds - It was manned at 2000 tonight.

Hi,

I've got a Skoda Fabia 1.9Tdi 100ps. It's just had it's first service at 10k. A month later it's pushing oil passed the oil filler cap, not a lot but it's leaking nevertheless.

The dealership had a look at it this morning and they said that "they've never seen it before" and that i "should keep an eye on it" and if it persists or gets worse i should book it in.

My thoughts are a faulty cap (which they dismissed)a blocked breather or they over filled the engine with oil at the service ( it was brimmed to the max with oil when i picked it up ).

Has anyone else experienced this on a VAG Tdi ?

Thanks for any help. Read more

Ash

Right, i'm home.

As soon as i arrived they were on the case ! A quick look showed that the usual amount of oil had escaped. They thought that the cap wasn't as tight as it should be, plus the seal on my filler cap looked thin to them ! So another cap was fitted rather quickly and i was sent out on a test drive. A quick blast up the M5 and back proved that their theory was correct.

They explained that they had encountered one or two other cases and the quick fix if the leak is serious enough and to get you home is to bend the lugs on the cap a touch to tighten the cap up but to get the car checked out by a dealer in case there's another cause. Maybe the cap couldn't cope with my heavy right foot ?

I'm just glad it's fixed and there's no serious fault after 11k trouble free miles !

Since I've been around (2002?) many backroomers have come and gone (some missed more than others). These days, quite a few seem to disappear disappear after a relatively brief flurry of activity (sometimes quite prolific), others hang around for longer but gradually fade away and then there's the group who've been here forever and still pop in/out on a fairly regular basis.

So, how long have you been a member of this prestigious club, what keeps you here and whose contributions do you miss most?

No changes there.

There's nothing complex about modern diesels. Petrols and diesels are now becoming more analogous in technology.

I'm amazed that you remember the conversations we had in print.
I truly don't know what went wrong with things here, but I recognise that I'm no computer.

Item on the radio this morning that Highways Agency presence is to spread from midlands to M25 and that they are improving driving behaviour.

Ironic as I passed a Highways Agency Shogun on the M6 yesterday morning near Walsall, 65mph in the middle lane, inside lane empty - the boys were setting a good example! Read more
