...are great - well some of them.

Does anyone know a website or know from personal experience how to find out which service stations have free showers.

I just can't remember last time I went to London Gateway if they had them. I pretty much want the closest service station on M1 to London that has shower facilities (I might even squeeze to a pound or two if there are pay ones).

Thanks if anyone can help! Read more

Thanks Chris - nice website.

Watford Gap is sixty miles or so from London isn't it?! (from memory)...there I was thinking most service stations had showers...

I like the idea of chained down cutlery!!!

I don't think I have ever read a more amusing (motoring related) sentence than the winner of the 2005 award .

There I was driving home yesterday in my Passat. When a VW customer care vehicle passed me with all the transfers on it saying VW customer care. Was it a VW I here use ask? NO it wasn't it was a Land Rover Discovery. When I got my joining pack from VW I do not remember a picture of a discovery in the brochure.

Hi guys

I posted this a few weeks ago but it disappeared.
I currently work in IT but have met a friend of a friend who works at a busy Ford dealership and was telling me about his job etc.
I do some sales in my current job in IT but would like a career change into the car industry as its a great interest of mine.

anyway il cut to the chase - friend has advised to do what he did - pop into the dealership and introduce yourself to manager (there are currently no jobs advertised)

can anyone offer me any advice in terms of what they will be looking for, questions asked 'if' the manager is willing to see me there and then, or maybe over an informal chat.

any advice is greatly received.

thanks in advance.
thanks

I am looking to buy a 1999 Jaguar XJ8 at a car auction. Naturally I cannot drive the car before buying it so I have tried to trace as much information about the car before buying it.

Although the car is in the range to be effected by the Nikasil problem the car has never been fitted with a new engine. I have spoken to the 2 main dealers who have serviced the car and they say the car did not need a new engine and that the vast majority of early XJ8s didnt have their engine replaced. The car has been main dealer serviced 5 times in its 68,000 miles

On speaking to Jaguar the only recorded blow by test was at 21,000 miles, the car is now currently on 68,000 miles.

I know the best solution would be to take the car to a Jag dealer for a blow by test but as its at a car auction I am unable to do this. I was hoping to find that it had a new engine fitted but it definitely hasnt. Is there any way of testing a car at the auction to see if the engine is fine? I would greatly appreciate all advice, naturally however cheap I get the car I don't want to buy a car the needs a new engine!

Many thanks in advance

Friend of mine had Jaguar change the engine - out of warranty he had to pay for the labour content, so if you get a good deal it still may be worth a punt . ...???

Used a high pressure spray wash today. First time ever. Hot soapy water, then rinse off ,then distilled water for non streak drying.
Sign said 100 bar pressure. Scared me --I could see my paint flying off down the road not to mention my wiper blades and bonnet badge.
So i did not get over close --result a half clean car. Frankly it really needed a rub over with a sponge to shift the grime.
Question how do you use a high pressure spray without dislodging your windscreen ?
Any advice please. Read more

THe pressure washers are really good for something like my Landcruiser which in the winter months gets really, really, muddy; but they're never going to make paintwork clean and you'll take the paint off before you shine it up with a pressure washer.

Go all over the car with the pressure washer, making sure you shift all the mud and the like, particularly under the wheel arches and other obscure places.

Then go over it with a soft brush, sponge, whatever, and clean it properly.

Then rinse it off with the pressure washer, especially checking the obscure places which may need a further blast.

Drive really, really, really fast to make the car dry without leaving smears everywhere and to ensure that the ones that are left look like go-faster smears.

passat_man

Hi hope someone can give me some advice on this!
I have a 53 plate passat tdi 130 (dp). 29k.
Around town it can eat upto a litre of oil in 300 miles, yet on a long motorway journey it doesn't seem to use any!
People following me say the car emmits a puff of grey/black mix every time I change gear, (usually in the rev range of 2-2.5k), other than that I get the usual black fog if I change above 3k revs. The only other point of note is that I get a grey smoke emitted when the car is started from cold, i.e after it has sat in the garage for a night.
Not suprisingly VW say there isn't a problem with my car, but with the long life oil costing around £40 per 4 litres, the oil useage is certainly no joke!!
Any ideas folks?

Thanks Ian. Read more

In my experience some people are just "unlucky" with cars.I have heard loads of "good" reports about Passats and equally loads of "bad" reports.I don't think it is just "coincidence" that both me and my work colleague had/have had "bad" passats.I owned my 2001 TDi (130) for 3 years.I was only the 2nd owner and bought it at 21K miles. It was never out of the dealership. In my time of owning it, I had a new turbo fitted (loss of power),a new dash(irritating creaking),2 ball bearings removed from front seat runners(no idea how they got there,£40 please!!),new hazard light switch, new rear reg plate light fitting, new rear window(elements failed). However,I NEVER had a problem with oil consumption. One common thing I have heard of,is very poor customer relations.Definitely so in my area.My car was in 8 times to 3 different dealers before the dash problem was resolved and I had to take the manager out in my car to let him hear the ball-bearing "noise".They said they couldn't hear (didn't want to hear)anything. How ballbearings got in the front seat runners amazed me.It was never out of the garage and they then said to me it must have been my Son that put them there, maybe out of his pinball machine,as that's what they looked like.He was 9 months old at the time!!

I've been using my VW for the last week so my Megane was sitting in our garage. Went to use it this morning and there's a strange smell in it, a sort of decaying vegetable type of smell. Had a good look around and couldn't find anything rotten lying around. I wonder if it could be something to do with the aircon but I gave it a good run on hot air to dry it all out and it's no better. Car was fine when I put it in the garage. I've not had this problem on previous Renaults.

Does anyone know what might be causing it? Could it be mould in the aircon? If so, how do I get rid of it? Car is only just over a year old.

Thanks
