I had to replace the rear tyres early on my Mk. 4 Golf GTi due to uneven tread wear. This left a series of ripples where the tread varied from 3 mm down to 2mm and back several times around the periphery of the tyre.
Does anybody know what caused this and what I should do to prevent it happening to my new tyres? Read more

I agree with madf. Probably shocks. The bounce test is not a lot of good though - only finds shocks which have completely failed - it's impossible to put in the same energy levls they experience in use. It's been discussed here before; shocks have an effective life of 80 - 100k at which point damping has deteriorated significantly.

Why is it that a certain section of our exercise mad population think that it's perfectly ok to jog in the road rather than use the pavement? Seems a little odd to me. Especially when the chances of getting run over on the pavement are virtually nil.

Also, why do people who are pushing wheelchairs think that the safest way to get from A to B is to push their charge in the gutter? The 'pilots' should stop for a second and just have a look at the mask of fear etched onto the face of the person in the chair.

Sorry if I seem a little tetchy - been driving round the town centre all day. I live in a seaside resort, the weather's been lovely and it's flower show time. I'm a little tense. Now, where did I put those recreational drugs...

He did indeed. He had an undetected heart defect, present from birth, and the general consensus was that he would have died much earlier if he had not been so fit.

Sorry, there were Probe dealership workshop ones on there, maybe they still are and I picked the wrong one? These were excellent as long as you have a PC.

Has anyone had dealings with this internet based supplier, the policy is underwritten by Allianz Cornhill.

I just seem to be talking to a brick wall when contacting them, I hopefully have had a response that may be favourable but the previous letter from them was to cancel my policy.

I received a letter saying I had not signed the proposal form, I didnt sign it because I signed up on the internet, a cover note was duly dispatched with this policy. This letter prompted me to ring the office, they said it was a legal requirement to sign the form. Which form, I asked?

"The proposal form" but I havent had one, I signed up on the internet booking form.

Today I opened a letter telling me that as I had not contacted them my policy was cancelled.

I rang the office again and was told not to worry!

Engine cold... and hot

I have had the filler cap changed.
I have the hoses examined with no staining
I have has the exhaust changed.. needed doing anyway.

Sorry dont know the motor. But it has a sealed fuel system,ie fuel vapours collect in a carbon canister.the ecu decides when the vapours are released into the inlet manifold.usually during high engine revs so as not to effect general running of engine.could be the ecu controlled valve has failed.Just a possible and may be wrong?

Hi - I've just replaced my Navteq CD with a 2005 TeleAtlas and while the routs it provides are fine it seems to have some strange ideas on the location of town names.

I was coming along the coast road from Dover to Arundel the other day and while passing through Hastings, the guiding was fine, it was telling me that I was on such and such road which was right but not once did the town read-out show Hastings, in fact for most of the sea front the town read-out was showing a place that I think is in Norfolk. As soon as I passed the sign saying welcome to Bexhill, the town read-out changed to Bexhill - Hooray! This was not an isolated incidence.

Has anybody else found this or have I got some kind of bug in my system? Read more

Hi,
Just wondering anyone can give me some advice.
My car (honda civic) has been write-off (insurance already send me a cheque for the car) so at the moment, waiting for people come and take my car away. (not sure when yet)

But, just wondering, can i take anything out of the car? eg, my alloys and replace with the standard steel wheel, and other parts of the car too?
Since I heard from some of my friend, they took everything out of the car before they come and take the car away. even all the head light, chair etc etc...they literally tear the car apart and resell the parts separately.

However, I'm not sure if I can do this. as i would want to take off my alloys only. thanks! Read more

Who owns the salvage ? i.e. was the value of the salvage deducted from the payout ? If it was you own the car, if it was not the insurer owns the car.

From the sound of it the insurer has retained the salvage. If that is the case you can take nothing. It doesn't matter if it is standard equipment or something you fitted 10 minutes before the accident. You can take nothing. It is not your vehicle, you do not own it or any bit of it.

If you choose to ignore the law tha's up to you.

Hi

I have a 95 nissan 100NX and while looking for a nail in my tyre i noticed the rear suspension could probably do with replacing.
i showed 2 people, 1 said 1 need new shocks, 1 said dampers.

are these the same thing or 2 seperate parts?

Thanks Read more

When I was a lad (1960's) we generally called them dampers. I think the term 'shock absorber' came in from the USA.

I need to do a 30,000 mile oil change on my 1 litre March 02 VW LUPO, but can't find the oil recommended in handbook at Halfords. There is an oil on the Halfords chart which they say is for my car but on the can it says do not use if your handbook recommends another oil. Can I use it anyway or do I have to fork out for the VW oil? Cheers. Read more

Indeed, 500.00 is an old spec, there are better ones out there depending on the car.

If you do low mileage in 12 months then a 12 monthly change is still adviseable.

My mate drove my car to the airport today as he is leaving the UK (he is driving on international driving license and insure to drive my car) I was in the passenger sit and he was flashed by the camera twice while passing a junction in Bristol just when the light changed. Will this affect my provisional license as the car is registered to me and insured in my name (I am still driving with my international American license) I don't mind paying his fine as It will end up in my mailbox but I am worry about my provisional.
