Which product is better for keeping the windscreen clear - Clearalex or Rain-x?
I have never tried Clearalex and in another thread BRers are sounding off about Rain-x, a rough guess gives about 10-1 against the use of Rain-x.
Should I try Clearalex - who sells it?

Intermittent fault with engine cutting out usually happens at low revs when approaching a junction or roundabout. When trying to re-start engine its starts and then revs drop almost immediately.
Leaving it to stand usually gets it started again but in an emergency have to place foot on brake increase acceleration and then put it in drive.
It will then pull away.
Engine has not stalled whilst in motion over 40mph but its frightening that this will happen.I have lost confidence with the motor which in all other respects is first class.
Is going in again to see if fault can be isolated today.
But as the last time it happened previously was almost 3 weeks ago I feel its going to be a pig to find the fault.

thankyou so much for that.everyone pointed to the idle and gummed up throttle body.
Cleaned out fully and was tacky and gummed.
Am fairly confident this will clear it as the Revs seem to be much more consistent
My 1998 Peugeot 406 TD has begun to over rev on start up although it seems to resolve when the engine has been running.
It will also rev up when, for example, stopped at traffic lights or when stopped with the engine running in a queue of traffic. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a cure. I have an MOT (Northern Ireland style) on the 01/09/2005.

Might be worth trying Fiat Customer Services - I know most get a bit of a bad reputation but it's worth a try. It might be that the radio is not covered for a brand-new replacement but they will change it for a refurbished unit. If my vehicle warranty was anything to go by then everything is covered for the first 12 months but the cover reduces after that to more of the mechanical aspects of the car.
Hi,
I last changed my belt on my 306 TD at 118k miles, approximately 4 years ago. Prior to that I changed it at 60kmile intervals.
In the past 4 years I have travelled 20k miles (now at 138k miles). What is the recommended time limit on these belts? Is it 5 years, or purely mileage based?
I will also be getting the water pump changed at this interval (first time), along with worn engine mounting rubbers (timing belt side).
Thanks

I have a rover 416 1997 brought cheap two weeks ago and I have some questions about the coolant etc.
Ok When driving the car the temp gauge sits at about a 1/3rd the way up the gauge but when I am stuck in traffic the gauge does not move any higher even thought I know the engine is getting hot as after a while the cooling fan cuts in and out as it should I have checked the gauge is working as it deflects when tested so should I replace the temp gauge sender unit?.
After driving the car the coolant level sits about one inch above the max line in the coolant expansion tank but if I sit in the car and wait for the cooling fan to cut in the coolant level is at the top of the expansion tank with no air to be seen in the tank but it drops down if I drive the car a few miles back to about one inch above the max line is this right.
I have also noticed that there is no hot air coming out of the heater even thought the water pipe leading to the heater is hot I have moved the dial from hot to cold to hot again but it has no effect. If I drive the car hot air will come out of the heater after a while but it is not very hot and it will go cold after a while once you stop moving. should I replace the thermostat even though I sure its working as the top rad hose becomes hot before the bottom rad hose.
There is no mayo in the engine or water.

The problem is catching it in time. The K has a comparitively small coolant capacity, so any leak can quickly lead to problems.
I can`t turn the TP(traffic announcment) off on my Gamma radio, and it is driving me mad. I have tried everything, the instructions just say it can be turned off, but does`nt tell you how. Someone, please tell me how it is done. Read more
TP is switched off when you change channels eg FM1 to FM2 or AM or FM1 again

Did anyone hear the interview with The Faster Pastor on Radio 5 last night. He is a clergyman who has 3 Motorcycles with sidecars modified to take Coffins. One is a Harley(Growler please note), the other a Suzuki and the other ????
Apparently some Bikers request in their will a blast(pun intended) up a motorway on their way to the crematorium or burial. He intimated that 'doing the ton' was his speciality.

Tom Shaw, I've got to say that I'm with you on this one.
I've just got back from a tour of Canada, and was surprised (probably out of naivety) that 95% of bikes being ridden were Harleys. I can see why though. Potentially great distances and no corners to speak of, and also (another generalisation coming up) nearly all of the traffic in the countryside seemed to be content to proceed at or about at the speed limit in a calm and very civilised manner. There is not a lot of need for a fireblade or state of the art bike if you are about to undertake a long journey on these roads at or about the legal speed limit.
Anyway, back to the origins of this thread. Would any of the back roomers be interested in partaking of the faster pastors services when the time comes? I'm not sure that I am that keen, although I wouldn't know anything about it!

On my Vectra,it was possible to change the odometer from mph to kmh, simply by holding in the reset button on the dash, and then switching the ignition on.
Is it possible to do the same on a 406 HDi? Read more
Sorry but this is a bit late for Quinny. If the car has a trip computer as most Hdi's have, you can alter this to display km. You will then have both miles and km.
Hi
I have recently acquired a Pug 406 2 litre turbo and am well pleased with the car. There is only one seemingly minor fault... the heated front seats. The controls are by the handbrake, and when I press them they light up but the seats do not get warm. There isnt much information in the handbook, but I was wondering whether or not anyone else has this problem/knows a fix?
I would try and locate the fuse but the manual doesnt list this information... also I was wondering whether or not it is linked to the climate control, i.e. the seats wont get hot unless a high temperature is set on the console.
Additionally, any body know the service interval on the cam belt?
Any help appreciated
TIA. Read more
Heated seats - these are controlled automatically with a thermostat. Trying them in the middle of August probably means the thermostat is keeping the power off to the actual elements in the seat as the ambient temperature is relatively warm.
Cambelt change interval is 80,000 miles or 8 years whichever is sooner. However, it is the consensus of most contributors in this Back Room forum that changing the cambelt and tensioners more often is highly recommended to avoid a £1,000 plus top end engine rebuild.
Enjoy your new car.
Good to find an ally!
Nothing seems to cloud the vision of the converted, except perhaps cataracts, dirty windscreens and Rain-X.
