I know this sounds a bit vague, but I'm stumped by a metallic vibrating rattle from my 1996 Megane. It seems to be engine-speed related, occurring mainly at around 2000rpm. It sounds like a heatshield rattling, but all the heatshields I can find are all firmly attached, including the one under the floorpan on top of the exhaust. I can't find anything else loose, although as with most cars it's difficult to see down the back of the engine.
Any bright ideas anyone? Read more
My wife took delivery of her new laptop at the weekend. She took it out of the box switched it on, the computer immediately detected a wireless hotspot and connected itself. She clicked on explorer and she was on the internet. She then called me and asked who's the connection was and should she be connecting to the internet? I was away so had no idea. All this is new to me so an explanation would be helpful. Read more
>>Tiscali uncapped is if fact capped at 30gb>>
Two people have reliably informed me that they were offered - and taken - uncapped 2MB from Tiscal shortly after their £19.99 (15GB) service was cut in price to £17.99.
Both found out after checking what further upgrade offers were available to them, just as I found out that I could be upgraded from 1MB (2GB cap) to 2MB (same cap) for the same price by applying via My Account or phone.
I don't make it up as I go along...:-)

It just dawned on me today that the mirrors on my Scenic are actually mounted on the car body as opposed to on the door. Having a look around the car park today I couldn't see any other cars like this - they all seem to be door mounted.
Anyone know of any modern cars other than Scenic that have them body mounted?
[You can tell I sit in the car while SWMBO goes into the shops] Read more
TT's are on the door as well.
One that springs to mind is the Peugeot 1007 - presumably because of the slidy door thing. The mirror is under the front quarterlight which stays on the body as the door slides.
Hi all
Bought a 2000(V) Espace in December with the known fault that when trying to use the radio, the digital dash would flash on and off. Didn't bother me that much - it was a useful negotiating point, and we're usually forced to listen to the kids' CDs in the car anyway ...
Lately it's been behaving rather more strangely. A couple of weeks ago the radio started working fine, without the dash problems. Then it went back to its old ways again.
Yesterday it went completely mental. Current symptons are that the digital readouts - odo, trip, speedo - have decided to go all French on me and are reading in km/h. This I could live with - or at least not worry about until MoT time - but for the fact that the speedo (not the rest of the dash, just the speedo) flashes constantly. Oh, and the remote key fobs don't work any more.
TBH I'd settle for getting the dash reprogrammed to read in miles again. But I don't particularly want to go to a Renault dealer and be told I need to shell out a four-figure sum on a new dash and radio.
Any ideas what's up / where to start? Needless to say I've tried disconnecting the battery for a few hours, to no avail.
TIA

hi had same prob.waited till dash showed correct mileage or as near as possible then removed fuse in passenger footwell.dash works fine but no radio.fit a standard cd/radio in glove box or under dash .by far cheaper than new dash or renault radio.tell me folks if it worked for you.
Help. I have a 97 VW passat 1.8T 20V Estate, 3 months ago the red oil light kept coming on intermitently but more and more frequent,(every 10 minutes), so took it to VAG who did a full service and changed the cambelt as I requested but couldn't find a problem with the oil pump/oil light, 3,000 miles/3 months later the same problem has started again, oil level is OK, 82,000 miles on the clock. Any ideas??

We are looking to downsize from a full size MPV as we can no longer justify the running costs of the car and don't need quite so much space. We are looking for a smaller car, something economical (in excess of 40mpg) such as a small petrol or diesel. The car should seat 5 comfortably, be of decent quality (it needs to last) and have a boot big enough to fit a small inflatable boat when folded up (about 1.0m by 0.5m). Budget about 16-19k. Have already looked at the C-Max but i'm not a fan - the rear seats are awkward and we have had appaling aftersales service from Ford in the past. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for your time. Read more
Thanks for the explanation.

Just noticed unusal problem with the PAS fitted to my 97 Mondeo.
If i go full lock either way and hold it against the stop i can feel very slight intermittent pulsing thru the wheel inconjuntion with this i hear what appears to be belt slippage from the PAS pump. Of the 2 directions right lock is worse and feels at times as if i have not achieevd full lock. When the car is moving unless i go full lock it doesn't happen and is definately worse if the car has been sat overnight as i hear belt slippage on the slightest movement.
The PAS pump is driven off the injection pump fly wheel and was changed with the cambelt about 10K ago.
I,ve just swapped the front and rear tyres as the fronts were starting to wear and have the same make of tyre on all 4 corners
No visible leaks and the pump reservoir is at the correct level. The fluid has not been changed since i've owned the car ( Nov1999) and to my knowledge is the factory original.
I am thinking eithe pump or rack, but as it only happens on full lock am a bit confused. Read more
UPDATE.
Fault fixed, lower bolt which bolted the slidig arm assy that is used to tension the belt was missing so in effect allowed the arm to sit free of the diesel injection pump. There was no way to securly tension the belt.
Replaced the bolt and the belt, re-tensioned the belt and works fine, no noise,no intermittent feed back to the steeering wheel.
would and how long would an exhaust bandage on top of gungum last on the consertina part of the downpipe? you see the car failed due to the said part of the pipe blowing and the tester told me to pack the offending item with gungum and wrap an exhaust bandage arount it and, so long as it isnt blowing, he would pass it. i only need it to last a couple of days so as to get a chance to buy a new one. what do you guys think? i always appeciate any response. in response to daves email, thanks for taking the time to explain the workings of the swearfilter to me i might very well have misspelt something and i didnt see it. i will be very careful in the future from now on! cheers.

Yes, the same thought had struck me - either that or a loose baffle in the silencer, although the exhaust system is new-ish from the cat back (less than a year old). It's not losing any power, and it was MOT'ed about six weeks ago so the emissions (and therefore the cat) must have been OK then.
