I read in the German press that 307s have been spontaniously combusting all over Europe and I believe are subject to a recall. The advice is not park in your garage as this has burnt houses down, although this has been happening while people have been driving,no reason has been put forward as yet so just be careful you pug owners. There is a recall around but it only applies to certain VIN nos and your dealer should have the details. The article I saw mentioned power steering and I think some 307s have electric power steering? Mine is hydraulic as per normal so I am not losing too much sleep over it.

Discussion elsewhere about deterioration in tyres and suspension systems prompted me to do a Google search. For anyone who doubts that bad road surfaces damage cars, here's a helpful page describing the things that happen when you hit a pot-hole:

www.caaquebec.com/en/automobile/a_ch_14.asp

I'm becoming increasingly angry about the disregard of the highway authorities in respect of such damage. And, of course, they add insult to injury by building "safety" humps that cause further damage.

And, just as a footnote, I live in a town where almost all the road surfaces are in poor condition. The one that wasn't was the main road, the A1081. Guess which one is being completely reconstructed? It involves the total closure of the main route through the town for five weeks. The BP garage trapped in the closed section is receiving no compensation for total collapse of trade, so its staff say. The explanation? I guess the local authority has no money do deal with the side roads (eye-watering increases in council tax notwithstanding) and the Highways Agency does what it wants with the trunk road, especially if it needs to spend money to justify next year's budget.

Any insights -- especially from insiders or ex-insiders -- into all this nonsense would be appreciated. Read more

Re compensation. >>

None of the shop owners, many of whom have lost a
great deal of trade at what is the busiest time of
the year, have been able to obtain compensation

Unfair to the shop-owners. But it also strikes me as a trifle unfair that you and I should pay compensation to people (& it IS you & I who pay) because of the incompetence of public officials.

I know this sounds a bit vague, but I'm stumped by a metallic vibrating rattle from my 1996 Megane. It seems to be engine-speed related, occurring mainly at around 2000rpm. It sounds like a heatshield rattling, but all the heatshields I can find are all firmly attached, including the one under the floorpan on top of the exhaust. I can't find anything else loose, although as with most cars it's difficult to see down the back of the engine.

Any bright ideas anyone? Read more

Yes, the same thought had struck me - either that or a loose baffle in the silencer, although the exhaust system is new-ish from the cat back (less than a year old). It's not losing any power, and it was MOT'ed about six weeks ago so the emissions (and therefore the cat) must have been OK then.

My wife took delivery of her new laptop at the weekend. She took it out of the box switched it on, the computer immediately detected a wireless hotspot and connected itself. She clicked on explorer and she was on the internet. She then called me and asked who's the connection was and should she be connecting to the internet? I was away so had no idea. All this is new to me so an explanation would be helpful. Read more

>>Tiscali uncapped is if fact capped at 30gb>>

Two people have reliably informed me that they were offered - and taken - uncapped 2MB from Tiscal shortly after their £19.99 (15GB) service was cut in price to £17.99.

Both found out after checking what further upgrade offers were available to them, just as I found out that I could be upgraded from 1MB (2GB cap) to 2MB (same cap) for the same price by applying via My Account or phone.

I don't make it up as I go along...:-)

It just dawned on me today that the mirrors on my Scenic are actually mounted on the car body as opposed to on the door. Having a look around the car park today I couldn't see any other cars like this - they all seem to be door mounted.

Anyone know of any modern cars other than Scenic that have them body mounted?

TT's are on the door as well.

One that springs to mind is the Peugeot 1007 - presumably because of the slidy door thing. The mirror is under the front quarterlight which stays on the body as the door slides.

Hi all

Bought a 2000(V) Espace in December with the known fault that when trying to use the radio, the digital dash would flash on and off. Didn't bother me that much - it was a useful negotiating point, and we're usually forced to listen to the kids' CDs in the car anyway ...

Lately it's been behaving rather more strangely. A couple of weeks ago the radio started working fine, without the dash problems. Then it went back to its old ways again.

Yesterday it went completely mental. Current symptons are that the digital readouts - odo, trip, speedo - have decided to go all French on me and are reading in km/h. This I could live with - or at least not worry about until MoT time - but for the fact that the speedo (not the rest of the dash, just the speedo) flashes constantly. Oh, and the remote key fobs don't work any more.

TBH I'd settle for getting the dash reprogrammed to read in miles again. But I don't particularly want to go to a Renault dealer and be told I need to shell out a four-figure sum on a new dash and radio.

Any ideas what's up / where to start? Needless to say I've tried disconnecting the battery for a few hours, to no avail.

TIA

Help. I have a 97 VW passat 1.8T 20V Estate, 3 months ago the red oil light kept coming on intermitently but more and more frequent,(every 10 minutes), so took it to VAG who did a full service and changed the cambelt as I requested but couldn't find a problem with the oil pump/oil light, 3,000 miles/3 months later the same problem has started again, oil level is OK, 82,000 miles on the clock. Any ideas??

We are looking to downsize from a full size MPV as we can no longer justify the running costs of the car and don't need quite so much space. We are looking for a smaller car, something economical (in excess of 40mpg) such as a small petrol or diesel. The car should seat 5 comfortably, be of decent quality (it needs to last) and have a boot big enough to fit a small inflatable boat when folded up (about 1.0m by 0.5m). Budget about 16-19k. Have already looked at the C-Max but i'm not a fan - the rear seats are awkward and we have had appaling aftersales service from Ford in the past. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your time. Read more
