Am I right in saying that Vauxhall are now using Fiat diesels in their cars? If so, is the 150PS 1.9 16v CDTi engine that Vauxhall now use, the same as the JTD 16v engine as used in Alfa's 147 and 156? Read more
Yep, same engine. Also donated to Saab as well.
Oh dear!
New legislation comes into being on 1 January 2005. Speed limiters will soon have to be fitted to goods vehicles grossing at above 3.5 tonnes restricting them to 56mph. What's more, they're likely to be banned from the outside lane of three-lanes-or-more motorways.

Hi,
Quoted earlier.."How many Transit/Sprinter/Iveco etc vans weigh over 3.5t?? Almost none as far as I am aware..."
Well Quite a lot. 3.5tonne is the gross weight, fully loaded.
On some sprinters and transits maximum weight can be up to 4.5 tonnes. Above 3.5 tonnes gross have to be fitted with a tacho too.

Just like to say thanks to the driver of the gold coloured car(Volvo S80 ?) who very nearly managed to take out both my family and the mobile home behind me on a rather busy uphill stretch of the A303 this afternoon in Wiltshire. Not only did you scare the living daylights out of us with your aggressive and impatient driving but had you succeeded in your manouver, you would have gained all of a cars length until the next dual carriageway stretch which was some way ahead. I am urgently looking for a Fiesta tdci for mpg and space, hopefully 18months-2 years old; they seem to be in very short supply in the supermarkets (Fords of Winsford have 1). Short supply due to time of year?
Reluctant to use local Ford dealer but may have to.
They seem to hold price very well, any prospects of getting cash discount on say £7000 at a dealer?

Meant to say daily rental people.
& off course, worth clicking the Auction View link, to our left.Currently 30 or so - but most are in 'Closed' sales - main dealer only.

I predict that at least one major manufacturer will go belly up or form a strategic alliance with another.
The middle east will become even more unstable, causing the oil price to rocket again.
Cheerful, aren't I?
There, Auld frostbite has made a fool of himself (again) - now it's your turn. Read more
Oh FFS!!!! I can't believe that some journalists are just so plain DUMB!!!! How many times does it have to be explained to them??? I wish someone would write a book called "Joint Ventures for Dummies" and send a copy to every journalist in the country.
Yes the agreement will be signed later this month. As soon as it is signed and approved by the Chinese Government, MG Rover and SAIC should be able to release more detailed information regarding the agreement. Hopefully things will become much clearer to everyone. (apart from most journalists of course, who will continue to print the same rubbish that everyone reads and believes...)
However from my understanding, the agreement will effectively result in the creation of a joint venture company owned by SAIC and MG Rover. SAIC will remain Chinese and MG Rover will remain British. Let me repeat that - SAIC will remain Chinese and MG Rover will remain British. Control of Phoenix Venture Holdings (the company the own MG Rover) will remain under British control. However the new JV company will be partially Chinese and partially British owned, the exact percentage ratio will probably be announced once the agreement has been signed.
The JV company will develop new models and own Intellectual Property rights to the new platforms that they develop. I would guess that MGR will perform most of the R&D given that SAIC have no expertise in this area (this is one of the reasons why SAIC are so keen to form a JV) whilst SAIC will supply most of the cash.
The first platform to be developed will be RD/X60, a Golf sized platform. The first models to use this platform will be a 5 door hatchback and 4 door saloon, which will finally replace the Rover 45/MG ZS. It is expected that a Rover MPV and MG sports car will follow and will be based on this platform. (One of the reasons why MGR was so keen to find a partner was that they would only have been able to put a 5 door hatchback into production on their own but with a partner they will have the financial resources to produce other varients from the same platform.) Apparently the development work on this platform is almost complete. However the interior and exterior styling of the above model variants needs to be finalised followed by testing and then finally putting them into production. I have heard that MGR have so far spent around £300-£350 million developing this platform.
Apparently the JV will also develop a platform which, amongst other things will replace the 75/ZT and another platform which again, amongst other things will replace the 25/ZR.
Will be interesting to see if my predictions or almost everyone elses predictions on here regarding MGR will be correct. ;-)
I have just bought a 406 (90) hdi, 35k, 3 years old. It is a nice drive, no obvious issues and suprisingly spritely. However, on long motorway runs I am only getting 40 mpg, I was expecting 55-60, and the tech data indicates 62. It is overdue a service.
Any ideas - clogged injectors / air filter - could these impact the mpg as drastically as this, or do I have a real problem?
Many thanks

hi am driving a daewoo 2.0ltr cdxi espero at moment.am concerned about a couple of things.front suspension seens to have worn out at 50k i.e. shocks are not working.gearbox is difficult to select 1st gear.as this model is based on a cavalier mk 3 i would expect to see a similar problems on vauxhalls.any help or advice on either problem would be grafefully recieved Read more
yes it is also i now notice that 2nd to 3rd
can involve a 2nd to 5th which suggests gear linkage problem.
Have you checked the gear linkage is properly aligned? On the Cavalier you have loosen the clamp bolt securing the gear selector tube in the engine bay. Then remove a small rubber plug on the top of the gearbox seletor housing, grip the gear selector tube and twist in an anticlockwise direction until insert a 4.5mm drill bit can be inserted through the hole where the plug was and lock the selector lever. Now lift up the gearstick rubber gator and hold the gearstick in neutral in the 1st/2nd gear plane. The lever should be resting against the reverse stop, and the arrow and notch should be aligned. Get someone to tighten the clamp bolt back up in the engine bay. Remove the drill bit and check that all gear can be selected easliy with the vehicle at rest, engine running and the clutch pedal depressed.
Obviously this is the setting for a Cavalier, and *may* differ to the Espero.

My 1997 Passat has picked up an annoying problem. After a rainy period, I can hear water sloshing around somewhere near the nsf wheel. If I turn right, water gushes out of the wheelarch and ends up over the bottom of the a-pillar. This in turns seems to make its way throught the pollen filter (which does seem to be in place properly) and then through to the passanger footwell, or out of my heater vents!)
I have a feeling this is the cause of the failing of the heater blower motor a couple of months ago, and the last thing I want is to spend another £260 replacing another cooked motor!!
Before I take the car to my local mechanic, does anyone have any ideas as to why this water is collecting, and where? I've looked before driving but can't see...
Cheers,

Hi, I have had the same problem as you and I also have cleared the blockage now and had the pollen filter replaced. How did you get rid of the water in the footwell as this is under the carpet, I have been told it has possibly soaked into the foam. Any ideas?
The city diesel at sainsburys and tesco comes from greenergy UK. They have a website and detail the specifications of each batch. Cetane rating is 51 , and HJ advises that it has sufficient lubricity.
Not to say that this makes it a better or worse.
