Guys,
I bought a 1.8 Fiesta LX Diesel in the summer, 55k on the clock which appears genuine given S/H & MOT's.
I have noticed a few things crop up and wondered if you could shed some light on it for me and advise the best course of action etc...
1. Carpet in the driver side appears damp/wet. - How/Where do I look to get this sorted, probably a common fault.
2. Drivers door lock not working 100%, how much is this likely to cost me?, who is best to fix it?
3. Just spotted a rust bubble on the passenger A pillar when i opened the door - Suggestions on this please, would it be because of the smoothed off rain gutters on the bug-eyed facelift?
4. Any ideas on cost for front discs/pads these are worn, also how much is a dealer service compared to general garage?
5. Anything else I should watch out for???
Used to have a Polo GTI which I got rid of for cheaper more economical motoring hence all the questions.... Read more
Hi there!
I hope there is someone who can help me and my polo :)
Recently my 1.4 cl polo '98 model is using an enourmous amount of fuel! almost a whole tank of fuel to do 200 miles on the motorway- normally it has only ever used just over a quarter of a tank to do that!
It also is very slow to turn over on cold mornings and makes a ticking noise when it is at stand still. Also when in neutral, the engine seems like it is 'hunting' and sometimes feels like its about to stall unless I rev the engine!
I recently changed all 4 spark plugs and leads (they had gone very rigid) to eradicate the problem but this has not worked. It has done 40k miles and hopefully it will do a lot more but it feels very sick at the moment! Any ideas of what might be wrong?
Thanks for your time!

Bit strange this one. When I press the brake pedal my headlights come on and when I switch my lights on my brake lights don't work? I've visually checked all the wiring in the boot and all looks ok. I guess it's a short somewhere but I'm not sure where to look. Anybody had the same or have any ideas?

Thanks all
the problem was 'wait for it'. The wife change a bulb without
my knowledge and it was the wrong type. As I was going through
changing them I found it on the forth attempt.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I recently replaced both (dipped) headlamp bulbs on my 99T Vectra (facelift model with the perspex lens). I have since noticed a build-up of moisture on the inside of the offside headlamp. There is none inside the nearside headlamp.
I have checked the bulbs are in properly and at no point did I touch the bulbs with my bare hands while I was fitting them. Does anyone know what might has caused this moisture?
Also how can/should I get inside the headlamp unit to clean the inside, and how can I stop this from happening in the future?
Many Thanks. Read more
I used to dry a damp Mk1 Cavalier headlamp out before sealing the edge by driving around for a week or so with the cover at the back of the headlamp off. The heat from the engine bay plus free movement of air into the headlamp was enough to dry out the inside of the glass. This might avoid the hassle of removing the unit just to dry it.
Hi,
I had a new container of oil (upright) on the floor behind my seat, temporarily as the boot was full. I had to top up the oil, but the container later fell on its side and a little oil has leaked onto the mat, although the carpet is fine. I have not been able to get the oil out of my mat (carpet-like material, rubber base) despite soaking it in hot, soapy water - any suggestions? Or am I looking at getting a new mat, as it smells pretty bad?
Thanks,

Getting a bit into "I have a question" here, but I'd never put a rubber-soled mat in the washing machine. It makes the load incredibly unbalanced, makes a lot of noise when spinning, and I'd feel for the poor drum suspension! If you're going to do it, turn the spin off if possible.
406 HDi. W, (2001), Estate. I have a problem with the electrics of my car. The brake lights have stuck in the on position, the only way to turn them off is to disconect the battery, once the battery is reconected however, the lights come on again. Also with the key out of the ignition when i press the brake pedal the dashboard warning lights come on (with the brake lights still on). If i start the engine and then turn it off with my foot on the brake pedal the engine will continue to run until i release the brake pedal. Have replaced the switch behind the brake pedal but this has made no difference. Any ideas on what could be causing the problem or remedies appreciated. Read more
Not knowing the car I may be wrong..Try disconnecting the brake light switch. If the lights go out. try. re`adjusting the switch downwards closer to pedal. then reconnect.. if this doesnt help..Remove switch re`connect. then press by finger. If they stay on. then would think switch prob??
Would expect someone that knows be along shortly

I don't know if the date is significant or not. It's a sub-link of tinyurl.com/6eky8 (item 4) and I suppose news happens every day.
The rear n/side door no longer locks/unlocks when the central locking is activated. All other doors and boot still work. Any ideas please? Read more
Glad to be of help!

I wonder why people buy very, very new cars that have just been introduced to the market. Then they whine about how bad they are (the early ones) and say: "No doubt these will improve on later built cars.". You know what I'm talking about - all those annoying niggles etc. as seen on Top Gear's Duffers (they changed it to "Lifers" have you noticed ???).
Question is: why not buy a facelift model ? Why is everyone in such a rush to get the newest one ? Read more
About 70 per cent of new cars are purchased by businesses,
rental, leasing and similar organisations at massive discounts.
That's why so many nearly new cars are such a good
buy and why the original owners suffer minimum depreciation, if at
all, when disposing of them.

What\'s for you won\'t pass you by
You have hit the nail firmly on the head.
There will always be some private buyers that will buy new for the kudos of having a new car. If it matters to them, so be it.
I would never buy new again. Nearly new, yes.
Hi,
My peugoet 306 uses a central locking system. All doors therefore does not use a normal key to open. Last somedays, I can not open the backdoor anymore.
Anyone knows this problem, please advise me!
Thank you very much,

Carpet wet: I had the same problem with my Focus but on the passenger side. Traced to the pollen filter not being replaced properly after a service, the next time it rained hard splish splash in the passenger foot well. I assume that the pollen filter on a Fiesta is on the drivers side.
