Bit strange this one. When I press the brake pedal my headlights come on and when I switch my lights on my brake lights don't work? I've visually checked all the wiring in the boot and all looks ok. I guess it's a short somewhere but I'm not sure where to look. Anybody had the same or have any ideas?

Enlighten us (sorry!) ...
Headlights: do they all come on? Just the back? Just back, and front sidelights? What happens when you put it in reverse?
When the brake pedal is pushed the main beam and the brake lights come on. Not tried reverse but will and post results.
My guessing is that the earth for the rearlight/brakelight bulb is faulty and so the brakelight circuit is being earthed through the headlight system, tripping the mainbeam relays off somehow. Do the rear headlights work?
errrrm, errrr, hang on...
... nope, sorry, can't think of any plausible excuse for that one!
I would suggest replacing both rear tail/brake light bulbs first. One of the filaments may be shorting across both circuits.

i know this might sound silly but have you tried all the bulbs are in properly and have no dirt on the fittings also try new bulbs
Are you sure you dont mean. front/rear sidelights come on with brake pedal depressed?.This may be caused by a blown filament in rear stop/tail bulb-Or wrong bulb fitted. ie single filament
instead of double??

Thanks all
the problem was 'wait for it'. The wife change a bulb without
my knowledge and it was the wrong type. As I was going through
changing them I found it on the forth attempt.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
