Read moreMy sister has a eight year old Golf as an everyday car. The Golf has been breaking down recently and she is thinking of cchanging it. A friend of hers has offered her a bargain two year old 307 1.4 diesel for £5500.
Anyone have any experience of them? They supposed to do 65mpg is that achievable in real life and it seems to me that such a big car with a 1.4 diesel will have the performance of a tractor.
She was going to get a 206 with 1.6 petrol engine or one of these small small MG hatchbacks I am thinking they are better bets, both in terms of performance and ecconomy
Has anyone with any experience of this model,
Any replies appreciated

The company I used to work for had two pool cars which were 307 1.6 diesels. I think as town or even motorway cars they are OK, although I do not know what the 0-60 figures are overtaking was interesting and needed some planning as well as courage.
I never tried to wo9rk out the mpg either but I would be surprised if it was anymore then 45 mpg. The car seemed to return not much more on the motorway at 70/80 then around town.
The cars seemed to suffer with badly fitting trim that dropped off, the bit that goes under the engine (protect it I guess) came off one day on the motorway. Another time the driver?s door handle came off. I can not remember either off them breaking down.
What difference would using 10w40 oil instead of 5w30 make to an engine. Read more
GOOD QUESTION:
I am a petrol head and take real notice of oil. In y LPG cars I am pleased with the way the oil stays clean and honey coloured.
When I removed the damaged XUD9TE engine from a PUG 306 XTDT I bought cheap I noted the foulness of the oil.
Not to mention little of it which I think caused the engine to destroy itself.
SO first start on replacement engine was a flush 1000 km only and I used the following...
Gulf Western 20w-50 exceeeds API SG/CD suit Torbo diesel to GVM 6 tonnes.
In a word BLEAH.
Went dark really quickly and very thin.
Came out like water and lots of carbon.
Engine got rattly.
At 1500 K I am now running new filter and the following.
CAT DIESEL CH-4
15W-40
This is what we use in our EPP twin turbo cat V12.
I think it will suffice.
Smells nice.
Engine is quieter.
Time will tell.
Any comments?

And to emphasise what Schnitzel says, you're attacking the franchise holder, rather than the nasty horrible capitalist oil company.

Mine does the same (also a W-reg 1.25) although I've never bothered to record at what intervals it occurs. I wouldn't worry about it.

Mark,
are you back officially now? I'm guessing so given your email address and use of "we".
If you are, good. I think I speak for everyone when I say I'm glad about that.

Although Mark will (mostly) be flattered by your comments, as someone in this thread has already suggested, best we leave it there.
Anyone still wishing to pass on their good wishes to him, you should know his email address by now.

well if the so called justice system didnt persecute the honest people who have their car correctly registered, and do the square root of zero about the many who never bother to register it and thereby ignore speed cameras etc, if the system actually encouraged people to do the right thing more of them would
at the moment in my view sadly the system encourages people to ignore rules where they can get away with it
as ever its the honest middle or the road hard workers who will pick up the tab one way or another
When my girlfriend was driving home last night the engine stalled and she lost control of the car breifly and the engine "electronics transmition light came on" , this then went off after a show while then the "exhaust emmission light" came on, She took the car to the local garage and they checked out the exhaust and found a fault in the "back box of the exhaust" this part has been ordered , since leaving the garage only the "electronics transmition light" is now on .. any advice ?

These ghastly little engines have a list of problems as long as your arm. Reading the fault codes might give you a clue as to where the fault lies but can be misleading. Common faults are cam and crank angle sensors, egr valves, air mass meters, coolant temp sensors etc etc. Unfortunately a fault in the airflow meter may not directly trigger a fault code if the sensor is still operating within its designated parameters albeit incorrectly but the false info it is imparting to the ECU may throw the O2 sensor into a state of panic which the ECU sees as THE fault. Best bet is to find a clued up independent who is prepared to do a full and structured diagnosis.Modern cars, I love 'em!

Simplicate and add lightness!!
I have just finished reading Auto Express and their article on drivers using the new toll road as a racetrack. My question to the knowledgable out there is; if the road is private, what gives the police the power to patrol the road? Are they invited on by the owners?

Re M25. After the current widening programme, if more capacity is needed I'd go for an M34 solution - upgrade the A34 and A43 to motorway standards from the the M3 near Winchester to The M1 at Northampton via Oxford, linking with the A303, the M4, the M40 on its way. This could relieve the M25 of a lot of long distance trasfic and would be a 'brownfield' motorway, rather than swallowing up virgin countryside, as it would follow the course of existing dual carriageways witb widening and perhaps a bit of realignment.
I did pass my car test first time, but I'll admit to needing 3 attempts at my HGV. I knew I was being entered for the HGV test before I was ready (I probably only got about 6 or 7 hours of on-highway tuition behind the wheel before the first test and 3 more before the second). But that's the way that driving school worked - you had to sign up for the test when you booked the course. I changed to a different school and passed OK, no nerves or anything!)
