I recently (last week) bought a 2.5TD manual grand cherokee and although I noticed the clutch pedal was stiff it drove fine and had only one previous owner. After driving around this week I am starting to think the clutch pedal is too stiff and needs attention. Does anyone know what might be the problem. I don;'yt even know whether the clutch is cable or hydraulic. There is no problem selecting gears but I might end up needing a knee replacement op if I can't solve the prob. Cheers Read more

Could be the release bearing is binding where it slides. Could also be the pressure plate diaphragm spring gone heavy - I have seen this before (not on a Jeep though).

New problem on the old Pug!

Firstly the a/c doesn't seem to be very cold but there are a number of threads around at the mo covering that. Now I notice that the fan doesn't regulate itself (ie speed up/slow down) when I adjust the temp to extremes. However, it does pick up if I select the demisting function (and clears the screen pretty efficiently too). Could it be a faulty ambient temp sensor - if so, where do I find it?

As usual, any advice greatly appreciated.

This is why I'm confused.....it works fine on demist but not on normal Auto mode. However, the suggestion that it doesn't pick up until the engine warms up may have some merit as I only do short journeys in it now.

As an aside, whilst commuting ~1000 miles per week it never missed a beat (apart from a failed fuel pump) - since relocating and driving approx three miles to work through town I've had countless small, niggling problems!

I currently drive a 1994 Pug 306 1.9 Turbo Diesel with 149k on the clock and over the last month or so I've been experiencing coolant loss through excessive pressure. There is pressure in the system even 2 hours after finishing a long journey as when i remove the pressure cap there is a huge gush of water. Also I've noticed that the coolant is very foamy. I've tried bleeding the system using the header tank method but to no avail.
The pressure cap seems secure enough, so I'm assuming the head gasket is on its way out. The car seems to drive fine otherwise with no loss of power and the temperature never goes much above 80deg when driving normally. I've never let the car overheat and I've had the cooling system flushed and coolant changed twice in the 2 years I've had the car

I'm aware that head gasket failures are common on the 1905cc XUD engine so I've got a horrible feeling that's what it is.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Martin.

Thanks for that Ross.
It's a great looking car but a bit out of my current price range unfortunately! If I was a grand better off I would definitely consider it. Mine seems to be holding out and I've not had to top the coolant up since last wednesday and have done 600 miles since! Must'nt be too hopeful though but I'll see how it goes. If needs be I'll flog it as spares and maybe get another 306 or 205 for about £800 - £1000. As long as its a Peugeot diesel and lasts for 6 months i don't mind!

Thanks for all your help- I'll keep you informed!

Does anyone have any knowledge of the differences between these two engines? When I mention the 1.4, I don't however mean the zetec one from 96-7ish onwards, I mean the previous version. Is the 1.4 the same one that went into the Escort and got slated for having atrocious economy ?

As you say the Kent and CVH were completely diferent, but there were many versions of the kent engine. Originally there was the 997 3 bearing crank 105E Anglia engine, plus later 1200 (Anglia and Cortina) units, plus a 1340 (early Classic) 3 bearing units. All had a common bore size and capacity changes were achieved by using a different crankshaft stroke. Big end failure on these bigger engines at <20k miles was common. The 1500 Cortina was a 5 bearing engine. All had inlet and exhaust on the same side of the head.

The Mk2 Cortina used only 5 bearing engines in initially 1300 and 1500 capacity, soon replaced by the 1300 and 1600 'crossflow' units. These incorporated bowl in piston combustion chanbers, as opposed to the flat top piston design of the previous engines.

An 1100 5 bearing crossflow unit joined the range with the 1987 Escort.

However, the Fiesta 950 and 1100 used the Valencia Engine, which went back to a three bearing crank. Visually similar to the Kent, this engine was actually very different. Early 1300 push rod Fiestas used a 5 bearing unit, more like the Mk1 escort GT engine, even down to the twin choke Weber carb.

Just seen on the local TV news that the London Borough of Kensington & Chelsea is planning an experiment to turn Exhibition Road, South Kensington into a 'naked' street entirely (IIRC) devoid of stuff like parking bays, yellow lines, railings, other street furniture and even pavements! According to the programme, apparently those responsible for the concept feel the increased sense of awareness and vulnerability felt by road users and pedestrians (including the 10000's of tourists visiting nearby museums) alike may be beneficial in calming traffic and reducing congestion and so on.

Yes, I've checked to see if it's April 1st but it isn't! :) Read more

And it seems to keep moving. What is the effect of the two tailbacks at a time caused by the red lights, as opposed to (er -- in theory . . .) everyone letting one through then going themselves?

All,

Myself and SWMBO went on holiday to Tuscany in July 2004 (very enjoyable it was too, we got engaged), and hired a Citroen Pluriel from Avis.

Anyway, got a letter from them today advising they have received a fine from the Polizia Municipale in Florence for a 'violation of Italian Traffic Regulations'. Under section blah blah of the regulations, the hire company have provided my details to the authorities who will send a request for to my address.

I know the ticket is not for illegal parking as we parked in a private car park. It also can't be for speeding as Florence isn't exactly know for its free flowing traffic! So, I must have contravened a traffic signal or something.

Now, I have a couple of questions, if anyone would like to comment/answer:

1) Does anyone agree that the term 'Italian Traffic Regulations' is a bit ironic?!

2) If I receive the request, would I be sensible to ignore it? Remembering some of the driving over there, I object to the fact I may have mistakenly gone through a badly signed red traffic light when all manner of Italian drivers routinely cut each other up willy nilly....

Any comments gratefully received!

Cheers,

Steve

How do you know if the air con is working when its damn cold outside anyway ? Read more

the demist will be much quicker due to it dehumidifying the air.

No it doesn't. Or, at least, I don't think it does.

The dehumidifying effect is not a primary or even intrinsic function of air conditioning but is rather a side effect from blowing hot air (from the car) over a cold surface (the air con rad) and then returning it to the car without the condensation.

If you're blowing air through the aircon without the air being significantly warmer than the aircon then there will be no dehumidifying effect.

My 3 year old Shogun 3.2 DiD has developed a musty smell from the heating/air con. How do I cure this? and can you prevent it? I leave the climate on auto, is this best?

Thanks in advance. Read more

Eastbourne council have gradually introduced parking fees by areas of outstanding natural beauty i.e. the south downs. They do nothing to improve these parking areas and to be frank it really gets up my nose. Most of us work and pay our taxes and when we fancy a walk to view the magnificent scenery we are asked to pay to see what is our heritage. Shame on you Eastbourne for making a few lousy £s from visitors. Read more

Simon,

I randomly took four phrases from your post and found three of them word for word within the oil bible.

This leads me to believe that your post is sufficiently close to the oil bible that it should not be here, and that a link to the document is more appropriate. BTW, apparantly he prefers a link to the site, rather than the document, to ensure that people receive the latest copy.

themotoroilsite.com/forums/

The fact that I only found 3 out of 4 phrases tends to suggest that you did do an amount of work on the subject rather than simply cutting or pasting, but not sufficient for me to allow it to remain.

Apologies, and I have your text if you wish it back.

To everybody else, you will obviously see your notes have been edited/removed because of these changes.
