My father has a Y reg 806 with remote control. This works fine but the two rubber buttons on the top end of the fob are almost rubbed away. The key itself folds away into the casing.
Does anyone know if its possible to get a replacement casing for it or is it a case of getting a whole new key thingy from Peugeot? Read more
I am planning to split my time over the next 12 months between France and the UK.
Can anyone recommend an insurer who will provide cover for this type of use?

Please let us know the comparative quotes. Be prepared to indicate that you are thinking of reregistering your car during the year.
AXA used to be flexible on UK regns but at the last visit by a friend they would not quote.

Interesting item on the BBC website for London, news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4148507.stm apparently Westminster City council are quashing over 3500 parking tickets issued last Saturday, 1st January, as a goodwill gesture.
They seem to have been inundated with complaints as many motorists appeared to think that New Year's Day was a Bank Holiday even though it was a Saturday and the actual Bank Holiday was Monday therefore Saturday was just a normal Saturday as far as parking went.
What I found revealing was that different councils take different attitudes to enforcement on a Bank Holiday, one adjacent council said that it would not enforce on a Bank Holiday whilst another said that it made no distinction and enforced as it would any other day. Surely there should be some consistency as to what councils do, I know that's asking a lot but I suppose it's just another way of beating up us poor old motorists.

Parked in Woking (RF's manor)on 27th Dec to see the panto (Linda Lusardi!!) the machine took the money, only upon returning to the car did I realise that charges did not apply. Reckon the machine should have been switched off.
Hi,
I have searched the net quite a few times on this subject, but can never get a satisfactory answer. I am thinking of buying a second hand focus this year.
The Ford Focus(up to the end of 2004) has a 1.8 TDCi engine in it. Under all listings, the engines come in 115ps and 100ps versions.
Is there any way of knowing which engine is in the car by just looking at it. e.g. the vw/skoda colour the "i" in tdi for 100bhp and colour the "di" in tdi for 130bhp engines.
Also, from new, did buyers specify what engine they wanted(115ps or 100ps), or did it change by year/month. Ford have the two engines listed in their price list for 2004, and parkers doesn't specify. Insurance companies want to know which version you have.
Any help would be appreciated.

Very confusing I agree, I guess it is a typical scenario of Ford gradually evolving it's cars over time.
We have a 2002 TDCi 115, registered October 2002 which is without ABS and has rear drum-brakes; I had begun to associate the presence of rear-disc brakes with ABS, but it sounds as though it is more dependant in what Ford had available at the time of manufacture.

can anyone give me advice on maintenance issues on the mazda rx8. am looking at buying one second hand - great review on the honest john site ( : but unsure at repair costs etc ??? appreciate any comments on this... Read more
I ran an R100 and then an RX4 either commuting or with the pedal to the metal over fair mileages. Even on 50/50 petrol/paraffin. Perhaps that helped the seals, of course! No trouble apart from keeping the oil up. And that is better than it remaining undiminished until it is carbonized porridge.
They surely must be a lot better now, and I would only suggest that the lower revving but higher torque five speeder will not be significantly slower point to point and even easier to live with day to day.
I'd have liked one but SWMBO thought the Sonata better as her taxi!
I have a 3.0 406 coupe with Michelin Pilot Premacy's on. The standard size is 215/55/16 i want to drop it to 225/50. Can i do this? Should i replace the standard with Pilot Sports? Read more
The tyres might foul parts of the suspension or brakes, but if you've checked out the rolling radius and it's close (within 2-3%) then no reason why not. The ride will be a tad harsher of course with the lower profile.
With regard to replacement with a different tyre, it's entirely up to you. If they are the correct size, and the same (or better) speed & load rating, then no reason why not. I suggest you trawl the forum for possible alternatives. There is unfortunately no right answer, but you might find certain tyres are more suitable than others, and you may prefer a better-gripping tyre to a more comfortable tyre.....good luck.
under load (generally in first gear) the engine misses slightly local VW garage has said it is a worn distributor (60000 miles?)and quoted £160 to replace. Any ideas? Read more
think I had same problem with my 1400 1998 polo. all my leads went rigid, whereas they are supposed to be really 'bendy', changing all 5 stopped the problem. I agree 'elekie&a/c doctor' :)

I have a warning device on my car which is to let me know when the service is due.(merc 220 diesel) It has done 10,000 miles at least since it saw a garage and I am concerned that this thing may be faulty. I changed the oil as a precaution but the 'you need a service' sign stays off. Any thoughts? Read more
my ml 270 has just told it needs a service as the last one was two years ago as others have said it is either the sort of mileage you do in my case about 5000 a year but i change the oil every 6 months or failing that every 2 years.
Anyone else have problems with the windsscreen wipers on a VW Passatt? I have taken delivery of a new model which seems to have the same problem as my previous model, the wipers do not clear properly, they streak and often lift at speed.
Any suggestions?

Probably no help but I've noticed that some newer Vauxhalls have Bosch Aerotwin wipers. It might be worth finding out whether they are the correct size for a Passat.
Someone I know is looking at getting a fairly old (but quite high-value) used car from a dealer. He is thinking about getting an RAC inspection, but posed an interesting query.
If he buys a used car and something major goes wrong (e.g. autobox failure) within the first month or two then I think that under the Sales of Goods Act (or whatever its called nowadays) he can go back to the dealer and claim a repair on the basis that it must have been defective at the time of sale.
If, on the other hand, he has an inspection done and the report concludes that the car has no major faults then has he in fact taken away his own rights to make a claim against the dealer in the event of a major fault? In other words, would he be better off, from a legal POV, in not having an inspection done? Read more
re inspection, it would be quite easy for dealer to put good tyres on for the inspection, then swap them back with questionable ones immediately afterwards before handover, and similar dodgy dealings
im sure this never happens of course :)
