>>The facia panel on wife's 2000W Clio 1.6 showed symptoms like yours during the coldest spell last winter. On start-up all the dials would drop to 'zero' for 5 seconds or so, then come back. Consulted dealer who said it could be several things, but 'keep an eye on it'. Problem vanished when weather warmed up and hasn't returned. No wiser, I'm afraid, but running of car seemed quite unaffected.<<

Believe it or not, that *could* be the battery. Sweeping generalisation I know but apparently, on the Focus, when the battery level is low, on start up, all the dials will go crazy (sweep full then reset) to let you know. Mine did this over Christmas a number of times but now I've been using the car again and giving it a few good blasts, it's never done it again.

Hi, can anyone give me some advice ahead of my weekly battle with my car. I have changed the therm. switch, therm valve, coolant fluid on my citroen and still it overheats. I have even gone to the lengths of using an easi-bleed system to get airlocks out of the system. I have bridged the switch on the electric fan and it works - what am i doing wrong?? Read more

Rover sales down 47% on last December.

But MINI plus 60% probably due to new Convertible models. Saab did well too.

Do Rover sell any cars now?

I know this isn't one of those 'how to sell Rover' threads, but does anyone else think they should do Citroen-like deals on their cars? I mean they were what made the Xsara a best-seller when it was comprehensively outclassed, really, and if you can shift a lot of cars even at negligable margins surely its better than completely losing market presence? With the Xsara replaced, and the C4 not having the same huge mark-downs, surely there's now a gap in the market for a relatively mainstream car manufacter to occupy?

My daughter has a J reg 1.4 l Clio.
A local garage put it on the ramp then refused to service it because they said the steel sump was porous and they would not be able to remove the drain plug. They said this was a common problem on old Clio's and Fiestas.

Is this a known problem, if so, can the sump be replaced easiily withut removing the engine.

It's certainly a known problem on Puntos, so I suppose on any car with a pressed-steel rather than a cast sump.

SMMT (www.smmt.co.uk) has released December 2004 sales figures, it seems that December wasn't a good month for sales (bar a few brands) so 2003 is still the record year.

Seems that all the well known brands are stagnant/declining, while the Japanese, Korean's and some quality/specialist brands are gaining a good slice of the market. Interesting figures of 2004:

Kia up 57%
Saab up 39%
Mazda up 26%
Mitsubishi up 24%
Jaguar up 11%
Citroen -10%
Peugeot -9%
Mercedes-Benz -12%
MG -13%
Rover -24% Read more

My wife has had a smart for the last four years, but she is now ready for a change. It's a second car but the replacement still needs to be small to fit on the drive. She is considering a Ford Ka or a VW Lupo/Seat Arosa - budget up to about £6,000. We've owned loads of Ford's and I am aware of the Ka's ancient engine technology, but any other opinions on her choices? Read more

Does it bug anyone that they took away one lane for the M6 toll road leaving only two lanes. So where the split is, it causes a bottleneck for the old road Read more

Bromptonaut

Never noticed this as I'm usually headed for the toll road. What I have nearly been caught by is folks taking the "escape lane" that gives a last chance to avoid the toll road.

hi

i have an audi a6 1998 - is it possible to change the plastic lens covers on the front? i beleive there part of the headlight and not aftermarket protectors. they seem to have gone a brown/yellow colour and the lights are not as bright as they used to be. Read more

A friend of mine has a '96 Fiesta 1.3 litre which has a tendancy to hold high revs in between gear changes and has high idle rpm until the car has come to a standstill.

Does anyone know of common faults on these cars which would give these symptoms?

Thanks in advance. Read more

Thanks for that Dave, some very useful information. Next time I'll try doing a search myself instead of wasting your time!

Thanks again.

I have a 1987 Bedford Rascal van and am having problems with starting in the wet.
When starting the engine will fire up but then just die straight away. Then to try and restart it will take more cranking but then die again. this will normal happen three or four times before it starts properly, each time it requires more cranking.

Then once I pull away there seems to be no power there in first and second gears. This problem seems to sort itself out after the initial moving off and it seems to run fine from then on.

I dont know whether this is all part of one problem or they are two seperate problems?.

I have set the points and the timing and cannot see any loose connections anywhere on the ignition circuit.

Now I need some ideas for other possible causes. Please. Read more
