Renault Clio porous sump

Renault Clio porous sump - GordonH
My daughter has a J reg 1.4 l Clio.
A local garage put it on the ramp then refused to service it because they said the steel sump was porous and they would not be able to remove the drain plug. They said this was a common problem on old Clio's and Fiestas.

Is this a known problem, if so, can the sump be replaced easiily withut removing the engine.

I think the phrase is more like "they would be unwilling to remove the drain plug". Maybe they were worried that the sump was so corroded the sump hole would buckle if they tried to undo the nut!

replaced easiily withut removing the engine.


Most probably, though I'm no expert on clios.

It's certainly a known problem on Puntos, so I suppose on any car with a pressed-steel rather than a cast sump.
