L'escargot

In Lincoln there is a stretch of three-lane single carriageway road that is designated as "tidal flow". The direction of travel on the centre lane is varied according to need, i.e. according to which direction is carrying the most traffic. Control is via overhead signals. Are there any other similar stretches of road in this country?

I've bought a '94 1.6 Cavalier as a first car for my son. Whilst it's generally in excellent order the cam cover gasket has been leaking. Although the history shows it was recently replaced, the mess hasn't been cleaned up. The lower half of the engine is filthy. I was going to use Gunk or similar, but I've got a tarmac drive so much water will be needed. Has anybody got a better method? Read more

I've cleaned Cavaliers by getting the engine just warm & using a hot jetwash at a garage, whilst on fast idle. Avoid the plugs, distributor & coil obviously, and idle it long enough afterwards to dry fully, with the bonnet still up. All the rubbish goes into a settlement tank as well, instead of the rivers or your garden.

Not just any old fog lights though - I want the special ones that are *SO* bright that they somehow make it safe to drive at 80+mph in torrential rain and an inch of standing water.

Just like the RAV4 that went past me on the A40 last night, in fact.

What's best is that (apparently) if you switch on the special "I can drive however I want" fog lights at the same time as your "I can park anywhere" hazard lights, it becomes safe to use a handheld mobile phone while driving! Read more

I remember fog so you could net see apart from cat's
eyes.

Likewise. Even driving with head out of side window for better vision.

Allegedly, two drivers died doing this in opposite directions.

Help...

We're suffering a persistent fuel leak from the mrs' A-Class. It only seems to happen after it's been stood for a couple of days or more- after starting it up today there was petrol trickling out just in front of the rear wheels (hard to tell where exactly as it's got a plastic undertray that's nearly the length of the vehicle, hence it could be swilling about on top of that and leaving where gravity takes it). It happens regardless of whether the tank is full/empty, so not overfilling or the cracked filler pipes mentioned on this site.

I've taken it into our local ex-main dealer once (and will again tomorrow) with no result. By the time I got there the leak had stopped. The same garage had given it a major service just before the leak got worse. I had seen faint evidence of fuel/oil leakage on the drive prior to this, but assumed that my Land Rover was responsible (who wouldn't?)

It only happens when the car has been stood for a few days, though I've smelt petrol a couple of times when it's been used regularly (but found no evidence on or under the vehicle).

Any help would be welcome.

BTW: A140 V-reg petrol 50K, FSH. Read more

Have a look at www.baby-benz.co.uk and do a search for fuel leak on the forums.

Hi I have a 1998 vectra DTI CDX with climate control.
The air con has worked with no probs since i bought the car 2 years ago. When i started it the other day it would not blow any cold air, the outside temp was 30degs.
When i checked under the bonnet the compressor was not engaged.
I went for a drive about 15 miles no joy.
When i let the car cool down later that day it worked fine again, cools the car no problems. It then happend again when it was left parked in the sun for a couple of hours, compressor not engaged, when it had cooled later that night all fine again.
I have checked under the bonnet for any bad connections when running but no joy.
I have checked all the fuses , the wire at the compressor the relays (not sure which one works the compressor) all seem ok.
I think i have read on here that the compressors on these cars have a pressure cut off switch fitted in the compressor so it will not run if low on gas pressure. Could this be faulty or could it just be low on gas. I don\'t want to pay out for a regas if it is not needed. The air con cools really well when working. If any body can shed any light on this it would be great.

Many thanks Stevie70

A vac out, re oil & re gas is about £60 - £70 all in.

They should do a system & gas pressure check before putting any more gas in.

Leon on Derv

A friend is selling a 1987 Porsche 944 (series 2) due the the fact his license has been revoked for medical reasons after a motorcycle accident. He has offered me first refusal on this motor which I know has been well maintained and has not been modified in any way.

Any pointers regards what to look out for - mechanicals / electrical probs? I plan to use this motor only for a bit of fun and fair weather runs. There are 60K miles (ish) on it, and like I said she's in perfect order.

Off to check out classic insurance.... This should be interesting.....

Advice as always, would be much appreciated.

Anyone got any ideas on how to get rid of my pet spider that lives in my door mirror?

I've tried jet washes, car washes, even a tyre inflator thingy at a garage to try and blow him out, but to no avail!

Every day i brush away the web but like clockwork the next morning a nice web appears from the mirror to the door. Barring taking the glass out which I don't really want to do i'm stuck for ideas..

and how do they get in there?? Read more

OK, I hope this is considered motoring. Just what is the problem with having a spider, or even numerous spiders, on your wing mirror, as long as you can still see out of it?

I have the opportunity of buying a uk spec Supra turbo automatic.
The car is a 94 with 100k on the clock but has been maintained to a high standard by an enthusiast.
Am I barking mad even considering such a car I really dont want to end up with a money pit.
At present Im running a yaris for running to work and an 1100 virago for weekend blasts.

The Supra is for sale at £8k which I think is a bit ott the only mods are an induction kit and performance exhaust.

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks,

I've heard rumours that the engine is non-interference, so cam-belt not hyper critical but still worth changing, as it is on any second-hand buy.
