Can somebody warn me before i buy a Volvo S80 with more than 100K on the clock. 3 months ago i came here to look for advice before i bought my BMW E39 with 110K miles on the clock..which still hasn't given me any problems. The response was good and i got varied opinions some of which i found very helpful. Once again i thank you for that. My wife needs a car of her own and she has been going on about the Volvo S80 and its now doing my head in. Anything to keep her off the BMW will be good. Whats the word on buying a volvo S80..V, W, X Y reg..with more than 100K on the clock...say for about £5000. Or does somebody own an S80 and can they tell me a bit bout it..Cheers.. Read more
My Xantia needs some to bring the little orange disc back onside.
Handbook insists on it. No doubt a French company protecting another French company.
What else can I use?
What Spec details are the ones to look for ?
Many TIA Read more
I'm pretty sure I've used Halford's own brand too in the past. As long as it's the 'green' fluid you're OK for the Xantia.
The same is true for oil. Citroen stipulate a Total oil for the Xantia, but I just used GTX in my 8 valve 1993 Xantia. I sold it at 105,000 miles and never had any problems with the engine. Mind you, I was very fussy about changing oil and filter every 5000 miles. That's probably more important than worrying about brands.
The dealer uses Esso fully synthetic in my C5, even although Total fully synth is recommended. Again, no apparent problems.

I have just acquired a classic 1971 Rover P6. When I attempted to change the plugs I noticed that no plug spanner or socket (of which I have tried several of different thickness) would fit between the plug and the cylinder head in order to reach the plug. I think it is a standard 14mm plug - but was wondering if there was a special tool for removing the plugs. Read more

Try a box spanner - should work.
Penetrating oil won't do much (won't get past the sealing ring) but a touch of copperslip when replacing won't do any harm. Use a 3/8" torque wrench and torque to 15-25 lbs.
I have found that a stubborn plug in an ally head sometimes comes out easier when the engine is hot.
Evening all, our second car is a 95N Volvo 440 and I'm in the process of attending to various jobs on it whilst the weather's good. One problem is one of the rear lamp units. After it rains it mists up - presumably with rainwater running down the tailgate gutter and into the top of the unit somehow.
Anybody got any experience of this particular problem? Can the lamp unit be resealed at the top with a standard mastic type product?
Thanks Read more
Not certain of your model.but I remember probs on 740`s with lens cracking in a few places.clear silicon was what I used assuming your problem is the same.

I have car with a service warning indicator on the dash. Is it only main dealers who can service these models (c class Mercedes in this case} or can a local garage do it? Read more
Assuming its a 2003/04 C-Class W203 series then you can actually reset the service indicator yourself by pushing the correct dash buttons in the correct sequence. Any garage will be able to do this for you (the info is in the 2004 Autodata book).
The C-Class is dead easy for basic servicing (there is very little to do) and a decent independant will charge you a fraction of what the MB dealer will want (those potted palms and Italian suits cost serious money!).
'Intermediate' service books at 1.1 hours; 'Major' service books at 2.75 hours. Intermediate is mainly checking levels, belts and fluids + oil and filter change. Major involves renewing filters (air, injection, etc.). IIRC MB book brake fluid change seperately - but again, its a very straightforward job. Never ceases to amaze me how main dealers in the UK get away with charging as much as they do for very basic work.
i have a w reg rover420ie the air con wont work national air con checked it out but cant locate the problem.they say the condenser is fine the switch works and the fan works any ideas

This is just a thought.as I dont know the air con on 400 series.
They have a vacuum operated flap that diverts interior air/exterior into cabin.they may have another which diverts automaticaly air through air con.if this has failed may be prob.as I say may be wrong?

With most manufacturers trying to out-do each other with the best handling cars in all catagories,i can understand this in sports cars and the like, but in the humdrum family saloon is it so important about having a pin-sharp chassis which encourages you to drive harder causing the kids to throw up and the missus to scream? I see your screen name is rather apt... (IOW, read the post again and see if you understand this time)
I was at Goodwood watching punters lapping the circuit in their road cars the other day, and quite entertaining it was. As they sped down the straight they each had cause to change gear once or twice.
I noticed that a Sierra Cosworth caused its tyres to momentarily lose traction and squeal on each change.
Then yesterday I noted another Cosworth doing exactly the same thing leaving a roundabout. Is there some problem inherent in the car's 4WD system that causes the transmission to wind-up? Read more
Most if not all racing ones were 2wd;with 4wd it would be hard to get slip at all wheels;Ford used a viscous coupling between front & rear which should eliminate wind-up;you were possibly hearing squeal from the rear tyres caused by a LSD or Torq-lok diff. stopping the wheels rotating at different speeds.
Who saw that one coming?
Apparently JB got his lawyer to break the news to BAR rather than doing it face to face, and BAR are sharpening their legal pencils to contest the move.
I always understood JB to be on loan to BAR from Williams with whom he had his primary contract, but what do I know?
That would put JB in partnership with Webber - could that be a happy combo?
