All,
Has anybody had any experience fitting a non-dealer towbar to a multiplexed car? Browsing the web suggests this is possible, but only with the right kit. I don't want to muck up my Touran's electrics, but I don't want to give my local VAG dealer an arm and two legs for the offical product.

ps. It will get done by a towbar speciallist. Any recomendations for the Bristol area? Read more

Dr Rubber

Thanks for the replies, thats what I thought - I just wanted to make sure.
The TowBar specialist I contacted said they could do it, and there is a spare supply in the boot. And they want 500ukp less than VAG. I don't want to do it myself as I can't buy the bits for much less than they want.

Does anybody have any idea at broadly what price Mondeos are going for at auctions at the moment (especially Blackbushe or Paddock Wood).

I'm going to be looking for a 2 litre Mondeo LX or Zetec, petrol or diesel, with average mileage and about six months/1 year old.

Also, apart from Blackbushe and Paddock Wood are there any other good auction sites for nearly new cars in the South East?

Mods,

I have just mentioned in another thread that I am always astounded by the breadth of knowledge we get in the Backroom. Who would have expected a petroleum geologist to be available to answer questions about oil extraction efficiency and methods?

It just made me wonder if you boys have any stats for the number of people who (a) visit the site and (b) have posted in the past six months or so.

Just idle curiosity and more on the subject of the site than on motoring. All the same, if you have the figures, I'd be interested.

>>>>Trouble is - it's a bit addictive. I just seem to stray over here much more often than I really should.

Indeed. When I was privileged to meet HJ a week or two ago I confessed that the second thing I always do in the a.m. after trawling my e-mail, is log on to the BR.

Should I mention this to my therapist I wonder? Or is it just the way her skirt rides up as she crosses her legs and starts making notes? Shurely not.

My 40 minutes are up. Same time next Wednesday Doc?

In all seriousness if I was asked for a personal view I would say the breadth, quantity and quality of advice I got from the BR in helping sort out a car for my daughter in UK from such a distance as the place I live in was invaluable. As a raison d'etre, good enough for me.

Having sold my beloved Saxo VTR, and placed my burberry baseball cap at the back of the wardrobe, i need a more sensible and less chavtastic replacement.

Ideally would have aircon, and a big enough boot for a weeks camping equipment.

Ideas so far include:

Citroen Xsara 1.8 (S plate)
Audi A4 (120k plus miles N or P plate)
Peugeot 306

Which would people say makes the best buy? Any other ideas? SWMBO is tempted by the audi, but do they make good high mileage buys?

Thanks people.........

Well, i got home from work on friday, and in the local paper was a Xsara 1.8i 16v Exclusive for sale. So i went and had a look, and ended up buying it.

68k miles on a t plate, and with all the electronic gizmos (and they all work!) went for a 250 mile drive yesterday, and i love it - handles well, supremely comfortable and quiet, and loads of room in the boot for even for 2 bodyboards, wetsuits, picnic etc...

very happy.

thanks for the advice - mondeo is a bit too big right now, and my mates might think i was planning a family if i bought one of them!!

Rang the supplying dealer yesterday to book my Mazda MPV for its first service and paint inspection in a few weeks time.

The dealership's about 5-6 miles away and they told me I'd need to get the car to them by about 8am ideally. When I told them this wasn't exactly convenient their reply was "would you like us to collect and return the car for you sir?" Slightly stunned and fully expecting to be told this would cost £50 plus VAT I enquired what the charge would be and the reply "Nothing sir, all part of the service".

In all the years I had my Volvo serviced by the local main dealer about 2 miles away they never once offered to do this so, is this quality of service normal or is the dealer acting above and beyond the call of duty? Read more

Driven one a few times. Quite nice. 2.2 chain-cam Diesel. Good NCAP score and likely to be more reliable than the French offerings. Don't overlook the Ford C-Max TCDi - very economical and generally well-sorted car.

Hi,
Im puzzled as to what is wrong with the rear of my car? I had a set of brand new Yoko 205/55/16 tyres put on my Audi A3 1.6 sport back in May. I?ve just renewed the rear pads (which was a bit of a nightmare) but on removal of the rear wheels I have noticed that I also now need two new tyres as the inner edges of both tyres have canvas showing!! Im worried that there is something seriously wrong with the car as the tyres have only done short of 4000miles, the inner edges show canvas but yet on the outer edge there is about 9mm of tread and both tyre pressures are 28-29psi. If anyone could help find the cause of this it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Richard Anderson

You have a very serious problem there! Not really useful to spend too much time speculating on here as to the cause - get it to a dealer (or someone who has accurate chassis geometry kit) and get them to check the alignment. Obviously tyres in that state are both illegal and potentially dangerous - not to mention that fact that your geometry is way out, leading to possibly dangerous handling.

Please

Why does my car ( as above ) keep poppping distributors. I'm now on my third in 6 months at £ 124 a go and this is hurting .

I've been told my immobilizer system is surging the low tension curcuits. Could this be the case ?

Is this Possible ? Are 1988 RS Turbos liable to these problems ?
I know these cars were a sort of cross roads cars with some old and some very new technology but does anyone know if immobilizer systems can cause such nasty trouble ?

Any help will be much appreciated

My 2001 Passat, fitted with alloy wheels has developed a very slow air leak from one of the wheels. It loses about 1.5psi per week. No air leak is apparent when submerged in a water tank. The tyre has been removed twice and very carefully checked and a rim sealant used. The tyre valve has been renewed. I've heard that alloy wheels can become slightly porous. I'd be grateful for any comments. Also what's the current thinking about fitting a tube in a tubeless tyre? The spare, of course is a steel wheel so I can't swop! Read more

Sean,

I think you missed this in the original note;
