Knowledge breadth on the site - Vin {P}
Mods,

I have just mentioned in another thread that I am always astounded by the breadth of knowledge we get in the Backroom. Who would have expected a petroleum geologist to be available to answer questions about oil extraction efficiency and methods?

It just made me wonder if you boys have any stats for the number of people who (a) visit the site and (b) have posted in the past six months or so.

Just idle curiosity and more on the subject of the site than on motoring. All the same, if you have the figures, I'd be interested.

The main reason this site benefits from the breadth of knowledge you highlight is that (unlike many motoring sites) it doesn't put off/ intimidate people like me who run cars but aren't either extreme petrolheads or 'techies'.
It's a fine balance of course and sometimes there are 'conflicts of interest' between the 2 groups but I'd say the mix is very good.

oh dear - you know you're getting old when you start to repeat yourself :)

In fact many of the contributors to this site are extreme anti-petrolheads...

I doubt, for commercial reasons, that you will get the information you have asked for, but we'll have to see what HJ comes up with.
Knowledge breadth on the site - No Do$h
That information is, I believe, available to HJ but not to the Mods. Over to him as to whether he releases it.

Which is, oddly, one of the reasons why the petrolheads keep visiting, I suspect.

Nothing could be moe tedious than arguing with a clone of yourself.

Didn't you patent yourself?

On the basis that you mapped yourself ? [shudder] 8-)

Seriously though, its good to see so many different people here. It is sometimes very difficult to keep the balance right, but apart from the occasional glitches I don't think we do too bad.

I will say though that a lot of the quality of this forum is a result of the people who choose to visit here - compared to some other sites I think we're very lucky.

& lucky to be well modded - thanks!

Which makes me wonder about the demographics of the BR.

inter alia

1. Retired people with eons of motoring experience (and a distrust of newfangled inventions...)
2. People in the motoring trade (very useful on the other forum) & people who drive for a living
3. Car-driving students
4. Members of the professions sitting at a computer all day whose only contact with real people (now that everything is done by email) is over the 'net
5. Others (the large majority?)

Oooh, good idea for a Backroom poll. Why not enter it in Dave's thread ?

Didn't you patent yourself?

A poet did try once. Title of the application: "myself". She said that she had done it to prevent herself from being exploited in the future.

She didn't get very far, although she sparked a lively debate as to who should be named as the inventors.

I won't say anything about some of suggestions I've heard about who invented me. References to pointy tails and horns might drive* the discussion off-topic ;-)

And the dieselheads, fortunately. There's nothing so good as an argument between a petrolhead and a dieselhead!

The reason you get such a breadth of knowledge is that half the population of the UK are motorists and that is reflected in the range of contributors.

I came to learn about this site by reading HJ in the Saturday Telegraph. Now, if that's the way a majority of Back Roomer's found out about it then that would go some way to explaining why we have so many clued up (erudite even)posters.

I too am so often amazed at the real quality of help/opinions other people are able to give on this site.

Trouble is - it's a bit addictive. I just seem to stray over here much more often than I really should.

Oh that's easily cured; get invited to become a moderator and all you'll hear is the other two whining that you're never here......

I've never had that, have you Dave ? No ? So its just the tractor driver hearing complaints because he only ever shows up when there's a poll he wants to fiddle.

Imagine.

Can't say I have Mark. He's just like his car, unreliable.

Indeed. When I was privileged to meet HJ a week or two ago I confessed that the second thing I always do in the a.m. after trawling my e-mail, is log on to the BR.

Should I mention this to my therapist I wonder? Or is it just the way her skirt rides up as she crosses her legs and starts making notes? Shurely not.

My 40 minutes are up. Same time next Wednesday Doc?

In all seriousness if I was asked for a personal view I would say the breadth, quantity and quality of advice I got from the BR in helping sort out a car for my daughter in UK from such a distance as the place I live in was invaluable. As a raison d'etre, good enough for me.
