Mumbler

No 2 Daughter has just bought (but not yet collected) a Y reg Colt to replace her written off Accent.

I called in at the local main dealer (5Mins walk) and they gave me a printout of the main service schedules, including all parts used and the costs.

They use a new rocker cover gasket at every service.

Does anybody know why? I can't believe it has ajustable tappets on a 16v twin cam engine. The Accent used the earlier Mitsubishi 12v lump and that had hydralic tappets.

Is there some other reason, or are they just bumping up the bill?

I also see that the AFT fluid is changed at 54K, fair enough, but they charge for 8Lt of fluid costing £63!

Do they perhaps remove the gearbox so they can drain the torque converter?

Not in 4 hours they don't.

As the car is just out or warranty it will be going to our usual independant for servicing. Read more

My Galant sometimes sounds like a lawnmower for 10 sec's or so on start up in the morning.
An oil change has improved things, but once a week it still happens.

Just a quick question regarding test drives at main dealers . Can I be cheeky and ask for an all weekend test drive just to see if both wifey and I are happy with a car . Or do all dealerships maintain a quick test drive ?
Reason for the question is , we have never bought a brand new car before , and spending just over 10k I just need to be sure its the right car for us . Oh yes the car in question is a new C5 hdi . Read more

Surely it'll be a bit problematic getting lots of different 2 litre engines and tuning them all to exactly 275bhp?
Plus, dependant on their original characteristics surely some engines will have advantageds in torque, rev pick-up, etc?

Hi,

I have a 1997 Toyata Hilux twin cab pickup, 4x4, non turbo 2.4 diesel in white. It's done 112k miles, no rust, solid engine and gearbox. Pickup section has been re-timbered (a couple of weeks ago) and has a twin yellow stobe unit on the cab roof.

All receipts for services, cam belt done at 100k miles

Interior is clean and in better than average condition

12 months mot, Tax until 11/04

I'm trying to gauge a realistic selling price (non trade) for this. Any ideas anyone? Read more

I know that Bosch makes parts for cars but didn't know they have a service franchise until i actually popped into one today. (An ex ford dealer near me has turned into a bosch service centre, and gave me a very reasonable price for a 12k service with all ford parts).
I haven't been able to find about a huge amount about Bosch service centres, so i was wondering if any backroomers would be able to tell me their experiences.
cheers

I've had a '52 plate Corolla TSport for about 15 months and it has covered 26000 miles. It went to the garage this morning because the VSC warning light came on and the traction control turned itself off last night - investigation has revealed a replacement driveshaft is required. This seems like a rather premature failure to me (!) but my rather strange question is - could this damage have been caused by ants? It is parked everyday on land teeming with them. Or is that a daft question?

Thanks, i will keep an eye out for them - i have already had them inside the car.
(By the way, managed to speak to the technician & apparently there is too much play in the driveshaft joint - being unsure what the cause was he is going to replace the whole assembly. I think it might be pothole/speed hump damage.)

For what reason I do not know Jack Lilleys in Shepperton have a showroom full of 04 pre-reg Triumph Speed 4's for £4,250.

A great price in itself but given they had at least five sitting there possibly even cheaper for those holding folding.

Too small for me (6'2") but a lovely bike for those in to 'street fighter' looks. Red lines at 14,000!

Must be a Triumph sale period at the moment. Yearly sales of motorbikes have plummetted from last years and the year before sales figures.
Do not know much about the Speed 4, but can buy Brand new unregistered Triumph Sprint ST ( better then Honda's VFR 800) for £5995.
Having paid £5000 4 years ago for a Yamaha Fazer the Triumph is cheap.

I think the new 5 series looks just like an Alfa from the front.

I agree that the back end is a bit heavy though.

Also, I was playing with a Z8 this lunch time. I rather like it - although it looks just like a very modern E-type. Read more

And wouldn't you need to pay VAT on them as well, as they are imports?

I've been having some vibration on my car (4 year old BMW 330d), which started suddenly, along with a noticeable engine noise into the cabin. It was due in for a service anyway, so I asked the dealer to have a look - I suggested it might be an engine or gearbox mount.

It came back with a note saying they thought it was the front tyres. I've just been under myself and found the cause within seconds - one of the engine mounts has come apart.

To say I'm angry and disappointed with the dealer is an understatement! Read more

Yes - I met one a while back and was very impressed.

I left with a proper understanding (a) of what had gone wrong and (b) what I had just paid for!
